Is simultaneous occurrence of meningioma and glioblastoma a mere coincidence?
Background: It is extremely unusual for multiple tumors to arise from different cell types and occur at the same time inside the brain. It is still unknown whether or not the coexistence of meningioma and glioblastoma is connected in any way or if their simultaneous appearance is merely a coincidence. Objective: We conduct a comprehensive literature review on cases of concurrent meningioma and glioblastoma occurrence to elucidate the underlying concepts that may constitute this coexistence. Methods: We searched for articles on the topic of glioblastoma coexisting with meningioma in Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. First, the initial literature searches were conducted for study selection and the data collection processes. After evaluating the title and abstract, the papers were selected. Results: We analyzed 21 studies describing 23 patients who had both glioblastoma and meningioma. There were ten male patients (47.6 %) and thirteen female patients (61.9 %). The mean age of patients at diagnosis was 61 years old (the range 30 to 86). In 17 cases, both tumors were in the same hemisphere (80.9 %). In 5 cases, they were in the other hemisphere (23.8 %), and in one case, the glioblastoma was in the left hemisphere and the olfactory meningioma was In 5 cases, they were in the other hemisphere (23.8 %), and in one case, the glioblastoma was in the left hemisphere and the olfactory meningioma was in the anterior cranial fossa. In 61.9 % of cases, headache was the predominant symptom. Conclusion: Understanding the unique challenges posed by the coexistence of glioblastoma and meningioma is crucial for developing effective treatment strategies. Further investigation into the underlying molecular mechanisms and genetic factors involved in this rare occurrence could pave the way for personalized therapies tailored to each patient's specific needs
Histomorphometric changes of lung lymphoid follicles in young rats under experimental alloxan hyperglycemia
Introduction.
Aim.
Materials and methods.
Results.
Conclusions. Introduction. Diabetes has been and remains a global problem today, leading to disability, disability and death. The urgency of the problem of diabetes is due to the high prevalence of the disease and the fact that it is the basis for the development of complex comorbidities and complications.
Aim. Identify and investigate the features of histomorphometric changes of lymphoid follicles of the lungs in young rats under experimental hyperglycemia.
Materials and methods. The studies were performed on 48 white laboratory rats of both sexes. Experimental animals were divided into two series: 1) experimental and 2) intact. Each experimental group is divided into subgroups (6 animals) depending on the term of the experimental study: the first - with a term of hyperglycemia of 30 days, the second - 60 days, the third - 90 days, the fourth - 120 days. For experimental simulation of hyperglycemia, alloxan monohydrate was used at a rate of 20 mg per 100 g of rat body weight. For light-optical analysis of the structural components of the lungs, histological sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Histological examination of the preparations was performed on a light microscope Olympus BH-2 (Japan) (binoculars × 10, × 15, lenses × 10, × 20, × 40); photographed with a digital video camera Baumer / optronic Typ: CX 05c (Switzerland); micromorphometry was performed in dynamic mode using the universal certified program "SEO Scan Lab 2.0" and "SEO Image Lab 2.0". The perimeter of the lymphoid follicles (PLF) was measured. The level of glucose in the venous blood of rats was determined by the glucose oxidase method using sets of reagents "Philisit" (Ukraine) before each slaughter of animals. Venous blood was taken from the tail vein of the rat on an empty stomach (starting from the third month of the experiment) to determine the level of glycosylated hemoglobin HbA1c, using a set of reagents "BioSystems" (Spain).
Results. The level of glucose in the blood of experimental animals from 30 to 120 days ranged from 13.3 ± 0.1 to 19.3 ± 0.2 mmol / l, starting from the end of the second month of the experiment, the level of HbA1C ranged from 7.1 ± 0, 05 to 8.6±0.08. In animals of the intact group, the level of glucose in the blood was within normal limits (blood glucose 3.5 - 6.3 mmol / l, HbA1C 4.0 - 5.1). On the 30th day of the experiment, the PLF in intact and experimental animals was 449.3 ± 0.82 μm and 449, ± 0.17 μm, respectively. From 60 days of the experiment, hypertrophy of pulmonary lymphoid follicles with pronounced vascularization was noted, in comparison with intact animals, the PLF index was 2.3 times higher (p≤0.05). Involute changes in lymphoid follicles and malnutrition were observed in intact animals at day 90. In experimental animals of the same age, PLF increased 1.3 times (p≤0.05) compared with the 60th day of the experiment. On day 120 of the experiment, lymphoid follicles were placed concentrically around the bronchi and bronchioles in the form of "couplings". PLF in experimental animals was 1430.1 ± 0.12 μm, which indicated an increase in 3.8 times compared with intact animals.
Conclusions. Against the background of chronic experimental hyperglycemia, young animals developed hypervascularization and hypertrophy of pulmonary lymphoid follicles, thereby causing obstruction in the lower respiratory tract
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
