The Effects of Electoral violence on Human Rights violation: An overview of the 2015 General elections in Nigeria
Violence and human right violation are a phenomenon in every society and every sphere of social life. It is not restricted to the political sphere alone. Nigeria is violent-prone and undermines attempts at institutionalizing a democratic tradition. It cuts across every aspect of human existence. This means that political violence is just a subset of violence. One of the main attributes of liberal Democracy is the periodic and regular competition for political power with the governed as free agents exercising their free and unfettered choice among competing platforms. Elections are therefore a significant and crucial pillar in the Democratic process since they underscore the principles of political participation, accountability, and legitimacy. The people in this circumstance are the Legislature. A survey design was employed in this study where the response of the respondents from questionnaires administered to them was used. In addition to that, the average mean score was calculated. Having administered the questionnaires among politicians, party chieftains, INEC officials, and members of the electorate in three, it has been discovered that the 2015 general election was characterized by violent activities which no doubt marred the electoral process. Indeed, the 2015 general elections re-ignited the hopes of many Nigerians who believe in the enormous potential of the country as a leader in Africa. This will serve as deterrence to the financiers and foot soldiers that use violence to promote their political objectives. Secondly, Nigeria must improve on its existing security apparatuses in order to combat the dynamic and sophisticated 21st-century security challenges. Recruitment of security personnel ought to be based on merit. It is however recommended that the current electronic register needs to be updated due to the fact that some of the voters on the register are dead; many permanent voters’ cards are yet to be collected while issues of multiple registrations have not been fully resolved. Trying to clean the register further may be very expensive and may not eventually yield the desired results
Inadequate funding in Nigerian universities as a menace to educational growth
The funding of higher education in Nigeria has a long history tgat began with the establishment of academic institutions. Since then and up to the present, there has been insufficient funding for higher education, which frequently causes disagreements among stakeholders and has an impact on the growth of the standard of higher education in Nigeria. The incessant strike in Nigeria universities has also been caused by inadequate funding of these institutions. There have been several sources of funding for these universities including; Money received from outside sources in the form of Grants or Direct donations or government funds and funding obtained through additional sources of revenue, such as contract research, consulting services, working with private institutions and partnership among others. Many universities that have struggled with underdevelopment have had access to significant resources in the past, which their leaders have abused, misappropriate or stolen. Thus stricter measures must be implemented to deter corruption at our universities. The government and individuals should work together to provide the universities with substantial financial backing because of the essential role it play in the development of the Nation. Aggressive private sector engagement that would offer additional resources for universities has been suggested and the administration of the universities should actively investigate all possible avenues for collecting Grants or Money for its operations that have up to now gone underdeveloped
YOUTH RESTIVENESS AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: A SITUATION STUDY OF NIGER DELTA EXPANSE
Youth restiveness has caused a lot of setbacks in the socio-economic development of the Niger Delta region and Nigeria at large. Multi-National Oil Companies’ activities were disrupted thereby resulting in a loss of revenue accruing to the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and by extension the oil-producing states through the 13% derivation. Other problems generated by youth restiveness include land degradation through oil spillage, loss of lives and property, and in most cases human displacement.
This study set out to understand the effects of youth restiveness on the socioeconomic development of Nigeria and the oil-rich Niger Delta region. It adopted a research design, using a questionnaire to generate empirical data in order to outline the nature of youth restiveness in the Niger Delta Region, identify the causes of this youth restiveness, evaluate the effect of this youth restiveness on the socio-economic development in the Niger Delta Region, appraise the actions taken by governments at solving the problem and suggest further measures for solving the conflict situation beyond current government efforts. The study found, among other things, that youth vandalism and kidnapping were targeted mostly at Public and Private (Corporate) facilities; that their restiveness is mostly attributed to lack of employment; and that the declaration of amnesty by the government has gone a long way in addressing youth restiveness. The need for government to allow the federating units to control their resources showed up strongly as well.
Further, the study highlighted the need for different and innovative approaches in promoting youth’s survival and growth by the government through enhanced security, and social and economic policies that will engineer development in the region. More has to be put in place to foster youth inclusion in the scheme of things
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
