VLSI Implementation of a Non-Binary Decoder Based on the Analog Digital Belief Propagation
This work presents the VLSI hardware implementation of a novel Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm introduced in [1] and named as Analog Digital Belief Propagation (ADBP). The ADBP algorithm works on factor graphs over linear models and uses messages in the form of Gaussian like probability distributions by tracking their parameters. In particular, ADBP can deal with system variables that are discrete and/or wrapped. A variant of ADBP can then be applied for the iterative decoding of a particular class of non binary codes and yields decoders with complexity independent of alphabet size M, thus allowing to construct ecient decoders for digital transmission systems with unbounded spectral eciency. In this work, we propose some simplifications to the updating rules for ADBP algorithm that are suitable for hardware implementation. In addition, we analyze the eect of finite precision on the decoding performance of the algorithm. A careful selection of quantization scheme for input, output and intermediate variables allows us to construct a complete ADBP decoding architecture that performs close to the double precision implementation and shows a promising complexity for large values of M. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Physical Activity Classification for Elderly People in Free Living Conditions
Physical activity is strongly linked with mental and physical health in the elderly population and accurate monitoring of activities of daily living (ADLs) can help improve quality of life and well-being. This study presents and validates an inertial sensors-based physical activity classification system developed with older adults as the target population. The dataset was collected in free living conditions without placing constraints on the way and order of performing ADLs. Four sensor locations (chest, lower back, wrist, and thigh) were explored to obtain the optimal number and combination of sensors by finding the best tradeoff between the system's performance and wearability. Several feature selection techniques were implemented on the feature set obtained from acceleration and angular velocity signals to classify four major ADLs (sitting, standing, walking, and lying). Support vector machine was used for the classification of the ADLs. The findings show the potential of different solutions (single-sensor or multi-sensor) to correctly classify the ADLs of older people in free living conditions. Considering a minimal set-up of a single sensor, the sensor worn at the L5 achieved the best performance. A two-sensor solution (L5 + thigh) achieved a better performance with respect to a single-sensor solution. On the other hand, considering more than two sensors did not provide further improvements. Finally, we evaluated the computational cost of different solutions and it was shown that a feature selection step can reduce the computational cost of the system and increase the system performance in most cases. This can be helpful for real-time applications
Instability map based on specific plastic work criterion for hot deformation
Estimating workability is very important to complete the hot or cold working process successfully without making any crack. Instability map was developed by utilizing conventional plastic work criterion in the current study. Hot compression tests were conducted using Gleeble 3800 simulator to obtain flow stress curves as a function of temperature and strain rate. Based on the compression results, new instability map based on the specific plastic work was developed for estimating the instability during the hot deformation process. The critical specific plastic work value was determined by investigating the surface irregularity and shear band formation in the compressed specimens. Then, the instability map determined was applied for predicting surface wrinkle defect during the multi-pass hot bar rolling in combination with the finite element analysis. The predicted results using new instability map suggested matched well with the observations obtained from the industry. The developed approach is easy to apply to the available simulation tools to determine necessary processing parameters.The authors wish to thank for the grants from the
