Sensitivity of the virtual fields method to noisy data
This paper deals with the application of the virtual fields method (VFM) to the identification of constants governing anisotropic constitutive equations. After a short recalling of the main features of the VFM, its sensitivity to noisy data is addressed. The study focuses on the random component of the noise which always adds to the actual fields in experimental full-field measurements. The uncertainty of the identified constants due to this random component is derived analytically. The obtained closed-form expression is set as a criterion for grading virtual fields. The least sensitivity to noise leads to the best identification. The grading procedure is implemented directly in the VFM algorithm, providing systematically the virtual field which minimizes the sensitivity to random noises. Examples are provided for validating the approach with numerically simulated noisy data. Finally, the grading procedure is applied for adjusting the geometry which leads to an optimal use of the three-point bending test for identifying the elastic constants of a composite material. It shows that the criterion sensitivity to noise characterizes quantitatively the identifiability of one or several parameters. Future applications appear quite promising within the design of novel test methods for composites using the VFM.<br/
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. In Vitro Measurement of Strain Localization Preceding Dissection of the Aortic Wall Subjected to Radial Tension
Background: Aortic dissection (AD) is a common pathology and challenging clinical problem. A better understanding of the biomechanical effects preceding its initiation is essential for predicting adverse events on a patient-specific basis. Moreover, the predictability of patient-specific biomechanics-based computational models is hampered by uncertainty about boundary conditions and material properties. Objective: Predisposition of thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA) to ADs can be related to the degradation of biomechanically important constituents in the aortic wall of TAAs. The goal of the present study is to develop a new methodology to measure strain fields in aortic tissues subjected to radial tensile loading, combining optical coherence tomography (OCT) and digital image correlation (DIC). Methods: Radial tensile tests are performed on 5 samples collected from a healthy porcine descending thoracic aorta and 2 samples collected from a human ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm. At each step of the radial tensile test, the OCT technique is used to acquire images of the sample presenting a speckle pattern generated by the optical signature of the tissue. The speckle pattern is used to quantify displacement and strain fields using DIC. Stress-strain data are also measured throughout the analyzed range. Results: Results show that strain commonly localizes very early during tensile tests, at the location where the crack onset occurs. Aneurysm samples even show a sharper localization than healthy porcine tissues. Conclusion: This suggests the importance of extending the analysis to a larger number of human samples using our new methodology to better identify the conditions predisposing aortas to dissection
A Hybrid Mock Circulatory Loop for Fluid Dynamic Characterization of 3D Anatomical Phantoms
Goal: This work presents the development of a Hybrid Mock Circulatory Loop (HMCL) to simulate hemodynamics at patient-specific level in terms of both 3D geometry and inlet/outlet boundary conditions. Methods: Clinical data have been processed to define the morphological and functional patient-specific settings. A piston pump is used to impose a parametric flow rate profile at the inlet of the hemodynamic circuit. In order to guarantee the physiological pressure and flow conditions, a specific hybrid chamber system including a real-time control has been designed and implemented. The developed system was validated firstly in a single outlet branch model and, secondly, on a 3D printed patient-specific multi-branch phantom. Finally, for the 3D phantom, the outlet flow profiles were compared with the corresponding in-vivo flow data. Results: Results showed that the root mean squared error between the prescribed setpoint and the measured pressures was always below 3 mmHg (about 2.5%) for all cases. The obtained flow profiles for the patient-specific model were in agreement with the related functional in-vivo data. Significance: The capability to reproduce physiological hemodynamics condition, with high-fidelity, plays a significant role in the cardiovascular research. The developed platform can be used to assess the performances of cardiovascular devices, to validate numerical simulations, and to test imaging systems

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
