    Paradoxes in Aulus Gellius

International audienceThe noctes Atticae of Aulus Gellius contain almost all the ancient paradoxes. Nevertheless, in comparison with his philosophical sources, the author shows a shift in the perspective of his approach. He analyses the 'master argument' of Diodorus Chronus only from an ethical point of view and, among the seven paradoxes attributed to Eubulides of Milet, he quotes the 'heap' as an absurdity (absurdum), the 'horned one' and the 'not-someone' as a trap (captio), the 'liar' as a sophism (sophisma). Following the advice of Cynics, Gellius mistrusts deceptive manoeuvres, which highlight gaps in binary logic. At the same time, however, he is interested in argumentative structures, which lead one of two opponents on to victory. The extensive report of the quarrel between Protagoras and Evathlus, and many observations of Gellius on convertible forms of reasoning in literary texts fall within this rhetorical field

Народные сходки в Древнем Риме: античные дефиниции Contiones в источниках

    No full text
At the present time the contio — a type of political meeting in ancient Rome — attracts close attention of scholars. It is difficult but important to determine exactly which meetings were considered as contiones. Possible solution to this problem is a key part in understanding the specificity and role of contiones. Fortunately we have a few direct contiones’ definitions offered by ancient authors (Marcus Valerius Messalla Rufus, Verrius Flaccus, Sextus Pompeius Festus and others). Through the study of these definitions the paper attempts to ascertain criteria for the identification a meeting as a contio. The aim of the research is to find universal essential features, i.e. those which described not some, but any contio: its audience, convener and general purpose. Therefore attention is paid to the criteria which are the least strict, noted in most definitions, and do not contradict the descriptions of particular contiones. It is concluded that definitions found in the Roman sources provide important information which is, however, insufficient for understanding what meetings were considered by the Romans as contiones. A strategy of subsequent study o f the issue is also suggested.

    Gellius the Etymologist

I have elucidated Gellius' linguistic skills as an etymologist by seeking to isolate those derivations he hit on for himself. Furthermore, or in other words, I have compared several etymological explanations given in the Noctes Atticae with the methods of modern linguistics: that allows a positive judgment about Gellius as etymologist
