Article title: Age- and lifespan-dependent differences in GO caused DNA damage in Acheta domesticus.Abstract: The rising applicability of graphene oxide (GO) should be preceded by detailed tests confirming its safety and no toxicity. Sensitivity to GO of immature or with different survival strategies individuals has not been studied so far. Therefore, in the present research, we focused on the GO genotoxic effects, examining selected parameters of DNA damage (Total DNA damage, double-strand breaks - DSB, 8-hydroxy-2 '-deoxyguanosine - 8-OHdG, abasic site - AP sites), DNA damage response parameters, and global methylation in the model organism Acheta domesticus. Special attention was paid to various life stages and lifespans, using wild (H) and selected for longevity (D) strains. DNA damage was significantly affected by stage and/or strain and GO exposure. Larvae and young imago were generally more sensitive than adults, revealing more severe DNA damage. Especially in the earlier life stages, the D strain reacted more intensely/inversely than the H strain. In contrast, DNA damage response parameters were not significantly related to stage and/or strain and GO exposure. Stage-dependent DNA damage, especially DSB and 8-OHdG, with the simultaneous lack or subtle activation of DNA damage response parameters, may result from the general life strategy of insects. Predominantly fast-living and fast-breeding organisms can minimize energy-demanding repair mechanisms. The article is written within the project "Modern nanoparticle and model organism - a toxic relation? Physiological and cellular causes of developmental disorders in Acheta domesticus after oral exposure to graphene oxide"The main goal of this project is elucidation and description of mechanisms of decreased survival and decreased DNA stability after constant (five subsequent generations) exposure of cricket cohorts (Acheta domesticus -model organism) to sublethal amounts of GO in their food, and also evaluation of physiological and biochemical symptoms of adjustment to such stressful condition. The partgoals of this project are to check and describe:1. connections between exposure of A. domesticus to GO and composition of gut microbiota and, in turn, their physiology (growth, reproduction and general fitness);2. microbiomes composition in GO-exposed crickets in relation to strain and generation;3. microbiome metabolic profiles in GO-exposed crick -dependent scheme;4. energy budget indices in both strains of GO-exposed crickets in relation to exposure time; digestive enzymes activity;5. general cell state in GO-exposed crickets in relation to strain and exposure time;6. effects of GO on telomere length, telomerase activity, DNA methylation and DNA damage and repair level in successive generations of two house cricket strains</p

Developing a disturbance source characterization technique for small satellite applications

In this thesis we establish a framework with which to characterize candidate sources of disturbance for small satellite applications. By characterize we mean estimate disturbance source vibrational frequencies, and by candidate sources we mean sources previously determined with the ability to induce micro-vibrations. This framework centers on the operation of distributed sensors, and we present a set of components capable of performing a characterization effort of this nature. Our implementation of supervised learning enables us to predict actuator operational frequency values based on accelerometer readings. The standardized mean squared error (SMSE), a measure of error between the mean prediction and the true value, important for quantifying prediction performance, is shown to be a function of the Fourier transformation type used; and we conclude which considered Fourier transformation results in the lowest prediction errors. Furthermore, we analyze how different dataset sizes and sensor-actuator pairings affect the frequency predictions.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. Urszula Augustyniak. Dwór i klientela Krzysztofa Radziwiłła (1585-1640). Mechanizmy patronatu : recenzija

Recenzijoje aptariama Urszulos Augustyniak knyga „Dwór i klientela Krzysztofa Radziwiłła (1585-1640). Mechanizmy patronatu“ (Kristupo Radvilos 1585-1640 dvaras ir klientūra. Patronavimo mechanizmai). Reikšminiai žodžiai: Klientas; Klientelės santykiai; Klientūrinė sistema; Kristupas II Radvila; Lietuvos Didžioji Kunigaikštystė (LDK; Grand Duchy of Lithuania; GDL); Lietuvos istorija; Radvilos (Radziwill; Radvila family); Clientage; Clients' relationship; History of Lithuania; Kristupas II Radvila; The clientage networkThe review discusses the book “Dwór i klientela Krzysztofa Radziwiłła (1585–1640). Mechanizmy patronatu” [The Court and Clientele of Krzysztof Radziwiłł (1585–1640). The Mechanisms of Patronage] by Urszula Augustyniak. It is primarily a study of social history, focusing on the issue of social stratification of the New Age nobility – the clientele relationships, which is popular in Western historiography and still rare in our historiography. On the other hand, it could be stated that this book is an example of historical biographistics presented with precision. After the analysis of the political and military activity of Krzysztof Radziwiłł II by Henryk Wisner, which has been published for several times in large circulations, the study of the patronage of the noblemen carried out by Urszula Augustyniak leaves even fewer gaps in the biography of this Hetman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The presentation of the Radziwiłł court in a wide sense, the environment and style of functioning (mansion-houses, everyday affairs, patronage, etc.) in the framework of nobility culture, referring to the primary sources that are used for the first time, allows qualifing the study as a valuable contribution to cultural historiography. The review not only presents the parts of the study in detail and describes their recency, but also discusses the methodology issues, expresses polemic thoughts regarding certain evaluations, and refers to sources to correct and specify some arguments of the author

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

‘Basque for all?’ Ideology and identity in migrants’ perceptions of Basque

No full text
This PhD thesis explores language attitudes and ideologies among migrant students of Basque in the Basque Autonomous Community of Spain. I aim to explore the contexts of language attitude formation in interaction, and how these attitudes in turn, reflect the underlying ideological indexicalities that contribute to the creation of social categories. The processes of attitude construction and ideologies that guide them are then influential and consequential for group identity formation, for instance, when migrant learners position themselves on the scale of belonging to ‘Basqueness’ understood as a group identity. In this project I analyse three areas in which this influence of ideologies on attitudes and identity construction was found particularly significant and consequential for migrant learners of Basque: the construction of space in which Basque group identity is embedded and based on Basque resources subjected to processes of scalar evaluation; the construction of authenticity in relation to speakers, language and spaces; as well as in the construction of Basque language as resources convertible into economic capital. All these three areas show that essentialist and constructionist discourses on minoritised languages and group identity intertwine in the representations of social categories, such as migrants, language, language speaker. This has consequences on the extent to which migrant learners position and identify themselves as belonging to ‘Basqueness’.This project is ethnographically oriented and the data comes from observations and participation in Basque classes for adult migrants, interviews with class participants and interviews with other Basque learners at various language centres throughout the Basque Autonomous Community, as well as from Basque public institutions’ publications with language course descriptions and campaigns directed at migrant Basque learners
