Conditional Variable Importance for Random Forests
Random forests are becoming increasingly popular in many scientific fields because they can cope with ``small n large p'' problems, complex interactions and even highly correlated predictor variables. Their variable importance measures have recently been suggested as screening tools for, e.g., gene expression studies. However, these variable importance measures show a bias towards correlated predictor variables. We identify two mechanisms responsible for this finding: (i) A preference for the selection of correlated predictors in the tree building process and (ii) an additional advantage for correlated predictor variables induced by the unconditional permutation scheme that is employed in the computation of the variable importance measure. Based on these considerations we develop a new, conditional permutation scheme for the computation of the variable importance measure. The resulting conditional variable importance is shown to reflect the true impact of each predictor variable more reliably than the original marginal approach
Augustin Kažotić and Thomas Aquinas
Tome Akvinskoga, posebice u razdoblju prije same njegove kanonizacije. The study of the first generation of students of Thomas Aquinas has remained quite unexplored. Studies of Thomas’s first students are particularly important for knowing how the thought of the Doctor communis was transmitted and in what areas. Therefore, this paper also enters this area of research. The article first shows how for centuries it has been pointed out in various sources that Augustin Kažotić was a direct student of Thomas Aquinas and that he attended his lectures while studying at the University of Paris. The author then doctrinally analyse the context of Augustin’s stay in Paris to study, showing that Thomas’s teaching was still vividly present in academic circles. The author further confirms that the Dominican Order played an important role in the growth of the doctrinal influence of Thomas Aquinas and shows that Augustin Kažotić also contributed to this. Therefore, the author analyzes Kažotić’s connection with Thomas Aquinas in several doctrinal areas. Finally, he judges the contribution of Augustin Kažotić to the canonization of Thomas Aquinas. The article confirms that the life and work of Augustin Kažotić is a significant testimony to the knowledge of the transmission of the thoughts of St. Thomas Aquinas, especially in the period before his canonization
Augustin Kažotić, biskup zagrebački, sakralna glazba i liturgijsko pjevanje
The blessed Augustin Kažotić (Agostino Gazotich, Casotti, Gazzotti), a Dominican monk from Trogir in central Dalmatia, is very probably the most important personality of the musical Middle Ages in northern Croatia. His musical activities covered three areas: as a reformer of church singing, as an organizer of an innovative rite and probably as a composer. Functioning as the Bishop of Zagreb from 1301 until 1322 (after 1318 named Bishop of Lucera in southern Italy) he probably reformed church singing in the Zagreb Cathedral through teaching and performing; the innovative rite he introduced consisted of a new arrangement and way of bringing sung numbers into liturgical ‘dramaturgy’, as well as introducing some innovations in the repertory; and he might have been the as yet unconfirmed author of several compositions printed much later in such collections of church compositions as Cithara octochorda (first edition: Vienna 1701; further editions: Vienna 1723 and Zagreb 1757), and/or Cantuale processionum (Zagreb, 1751).Bl.
Francuski metodičari učenja i poučavanja jezika: Pierre de Lanux i Augustin Ouyévitch (Augustin Ujević)
U ovom radu raspravlja se o metodici učenja i poučavanja jezika istaknutoga francuskog diplomata, političara, publicista i književnika Pierrea de Lanuxa i hrvatskoga književnika Augustina Ujevića prema njihovoj knjizi (gramatici, slovnici) "Grammaire élémentaire de la langue serbe" (drugo izdanje, Librairie Delagrave, Pariz, 1916.).
NAREDBE I UPRAVE BY FATHER AUGUSTIN MILETIC
Biskup fra Augustin Miletić, vikar Apostolskoga vikarijata u Srebreničko-otomanskoj Bosni od 1813. do 1831., u svome djelu Naredbe i uprave
biskupa namistnika apostolski proshasti i sadašnjega osobitu pažnju posvećuje ženidbi i svatovskim običajima.
Bishop father Augustin Miletic, vicar of Apostolic vicary in Srebrenica-Ottoman Bosnia from 1813 to 1831, pays special attention to marriage

Letter from Augustin Hibbard to [William Hibbard] 1861 Dec. 7
Victoria V I Dec 7th 1861
My Dear Brother
Your welcome letter of Oct 1st came to hand to day, and I hasten to reply to it although I have not time to write but a few lines as the Steamer remains here but a short time to day. I wrote to Ashley by last mail, and will write to you again soon.
My health is improving and I am now getting along better with my business, the difficulties I have had to contend with are disappearing, and I feel confident that I shall succeed in building up a good paying business. There will be a great deal of building here next season, for our population is certain to largely increase in the next six months, the mines have never paid so largely as they have this fall, and discoveries have been made of very rich and extensive diggers. I have seen men that have made as high as $30,000 in three months, and a great many have made from ten to twelve thousand dollars. This has created quite an excitement amongst the miners in California, and there will be a great rush in this direction in the Spring.
I am shipping lime to day to San Francisco. I have already forwarded two lots, and it is pronounced a very superior article. I shall soon be able to ship to that place, and, Portland in Oregon, regularly, had I
been able to have done so this season I should have done well, for I had good contracts to fill.
I thank you my dear brother for your kind expressions of sympathy, and your wishes for my sucess [success]. If our Heavenly Father, blesses me with health I feel confident of succeeding, and I trust soon to be able to give you more [satisfactory] letters
I must now close, and you must excuse this short hurried letter. I will give you a long on soon
Give my best and kindest love to all, and may the choicest blessings of the Almighty, given of good be abundantly bestowed upon you
Your Affecte [Affectionate] brother
