Mixing the Immiscible: Improvisation within Fixed-Media Composition
This paper will explore ways in which mastered improvisation practice, with the studio as an instrument, is a proposed avenue to bridge the historical dichotomy between what Ted Gioia describe as ‘the aesthetics of perfection’ and ‘the aesthetics of imperfection’. It is proposed as a way to re-embody fixed music, as experimented by the author through the composition of his last fixed-media work. This will be put in the context of a wider trend observed amongst the current emerging generation of composers interested in the aesthesics of the work, by opposition to the previous generations that placed the value of the work in its poietics. The vital and primal importance of practice outcome as practice-based research’s main document will also be advocated for, as these trends are happening in the laboratory of live music
Inclusão indígena e exclusão dos afro-descendentes na América Latina
The author analyses the causes of the disparity in collective rights gained by indigenous and Afro-Latin groups in recent rounds of multicultural citizenship reform in Latin America. Instead of attributing the greater success of indians in winning collective rights to differences in population size, higher levels of indigenous group identity or higher levels of organisation of the indigenous movement, it is argued that the main cause of the disparity is the fact that collective rights are granted on the basis of possessing a distinct group identity defined in cultural or ethnic terms. Indians are generally better positioned than most Afro-Latinos to claim ethnic group identities separate from the national culture and have therefore been more successful in winning collective rights. One of the potentially negative consequences of basing group rights on the assertion of cultural difference is that it might lead indigenous groups and Afro-Latinos to privilege issues of cultural recognition over questions of racial discrimination as bases for political mobilisation in the era of multicultural politics.Latin American Studie

L'unificazione del mondo. Alexandre Kojève e lo Stato universale e omogeneo
The Author reconstructs the genesis and the later developments of the concepts of the «universal and homogeneous State» in Kojève’s writings. From the lectures on Hegel to the Phenomenology of Right and the correspondence with Leo Strauss and Carl Schmitt, the paper analyses Kojève’s thought on the universal and homogeneous State as the political form of the post-historical age. In the last part, the Author reflects on Kojève’s vision of the political form of Europe
L'écriture des normes
Despite it being a subject of growing interest in research on standardization, the description of the standardization process itself is incomplete. With a view to articulating coordination by the committee and market coordination better, the author proposes an analysis of the standardization procedure as the writing of a text allowing socio-technical networks to converge. His reflection is based on the study of the development of two standards for the same product, in two standardization institutions. The analysis demonstrates the contrast between the two frames of coordination for the standard, and the relations of specific prescription that exist in socio-technical networks as regards each planned standard. It leads to a study of writing and trade-offs within the standardization committee, and of the role of experts as drafters of the standard. Mallard Alexandre. Fluctuation symmetry leads to GENERIC equations with non-quadratic dissipation
© 2019 Elsevier B.V. We develop a formalism to discuss the properties of GENERIC systems in terms of corresponding Hamiltonians that appear in the characterization of large-deviation limits. We demonstrate how the GENERIC structure naturally arises from a certain symmetry in the Hamiltonian, which extends earlier work that has connected the large-deviation behavior of reversible stochastic processes to the gradient-flow structure of their deterministic limit. Natural examples of application include particle systems with inertia.sponsorship: R.K. was supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Germany via RTG 2131 High-dimensional Phenomena in Probability Fluctuations and Discontinuity. Body modification and paleopathological evidence in the iconography from the 'Philosophical Travel' to Brazilian Amazonia by Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira (1783 -1792) 1
Abstract Iconographic representation of humans is an important source of evidence for paleopathologists. This is particularly so in acknowledging sociocultural practices in past and/or extinct populations. The aim of this work is to report images of body modifications and cases of paleopathological interest represented in the iconography recovered during the 'Philosophical Travel' to the Brazilian Amazonia, led by the naturalist Alexandre Rodrigues Ferreira (ARF) between 1783 and 1792. Watercolors executed by the official expedition illustrators have been selected from the surviving archive. These portray individuals with their artefacts, clearly exhibiting cranial, facial and thoracic modifications, performed by groups such as the Tanarana, Cambeba, Jurupixuna, Mauá, Miranha, Caripúna and Uariquena. ARF also recorded the procedures and underlying cultural significance of these practices. The unequivocal pathological cases represented include a "male dwarf" [sic], and a Catauixi woman with dermatological lesions on her body. The author described with some details this skin condition and considered various possible diagnoses (e.g. vitiligo, scabies or leprosy). He also questioned whether these were hereditary or environmental in origin. This study considers the documentary evidence in the context of modern paleopathological inquiry, contributing to our understanding of cultural practices and diseases affecting the Amazonian inhabitants during the 18 th century. Key words Artificial body modifications; dwarfism; skin diseases; differential diagnosis; biocultural approach; paleopathology.
