Social networking site (SNS) use by adolescent mothers: Can social support and social capital be enhanced by online social networks? – A structured review of the literature
No full textAims and objectives: to critically appraise the available literature and summarise the evidence relating to adolescent mothers' use of social networking sites in terms of any social support and social capital they may provide and to identify areas for future exploration.
Background: social networking sites have been demonstrated to provide social support to marginalised individuals and provide psycho-social benefits to members of such groups. Adolescent mothers are at risk of;
social marginalisation; anxiety disorders and depressive symptoms; and poorer health and educational outcomes for their children. Social support has been shown to benefit adolescent mothers thus online mechanisms require consideration.
Design: a review of original research articles
Method: key terms and Boolean operators identified research reports across a 20-year timeframe pertaining to the area of enquiry in: CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Medline, Scopus, ERIC, ProQuest, PsychINFO, Web of
Science, Health Collection (Informit) and Google Scholar databases. Eight original research articles met the inclusion criteria for this review.
Findings: studies demonstrate that adolescent mothers actively search for health information using the Internet and social networking sites, and that social support and social capital can be attributed to their use of
specifically created online groups from within targeted health interventions. Use of a message board forum for pregnant and parenting adolescents also demonstrates elements of social support. There are no studies to date pertaining to adolescent mothers' use of globally accessible social networking sites in terms of social support
provision and related outcomes.
Conclusions: further investigation is warranted to explore the potential benefits of adolescent mothers' use of globally accessible social networking sites in terms of any social support provision and social capital they may provide
Shifting Selves: Home beyond the House - A Study of Ageing, Housing and Wellbeing of Older Chinese Migrants to New Zealand
No full textOlder Chinese immigrants are one of the largest ethnic ageing groups in New Zealand. However, people‘s everyday experiences of settling in a new and unfamiliar environment have been largely overlooked, particularly for older adults. This research explores the biographies, identities and everyday experiences of filial piety among older Chinese immigrants. Particular consideration is given to the role of filial piety in participants‘ housing and ageing experiences. This research is one of the first explorations of Chinese immigrant ageing in place, which also considers changing enactments of filial piety. The research is informed by a hybrid narrative approach that draws on episodic, go-along and fangtan interview techniques used with 32 older Chinese immigrants in Auckland and Hamilton. Findings support the importance of exploring positive experiences of migration and ageing. Older Chinese immigrants do often experience biographical disruptions and status-discrepancies when they move from China to New Zealand. However, in response, the participants engage in positive activities such as gardening and art as a means of cultivating a new sense of self and place in a new land that is compatible with their existing identities as older Chinese adults. The analysis explores the material-mediated basis for participant adjustment and acculturation. Through adaptive acculturation, older Chinese immigrants‘ abilities for both integrating into the host culture and maintaining their ethnic identities are realised. The analysis also demonstrates that traditional Chinese aged care models of family support with high level of intergenerational co-residence are evolving to encompass practices of filial piety at a distance and to encompass more pluralistic familial living arrangements. The analysis also demonstrates the importance of considering how ageing occurs beyond physical spaces and within cultural, social, relational and imagined landscapes. The analysis shifts away from the focus in existing literature on how older Chinese immigrants are passively transformed into minority subjects to how they are transforming themselves through migration and their efforts to age well in New Zealand
Data for "Inverse Scaling: When Bigger Isn't Better"
No full textWork on scaling laws has found that large language models (LMs) show predictable improvements to overall loss with increased scale (model size, training data, and compute). Here, we present evidence for the claim that LMs may show inverse scaling, or worse task performance with increased scale, e.g., due to flaws in the training objective and data. We present empirical evidence of inverse scaling on 11 datasets collected by running a public contest, the Inverse Scaling Prize, with a substantial prize pool. Through analysis of the datasets, along with other examples found in the literature, we identify four potential causes of inverse scaling: (i) preference to repeat memorized sequences over following in-context instructions, (ii) imitation of undesirable patterns in the training data, (iii) tasks containing an easy distractor task which LMs could focus on, rather than the harder real task, and (iv) correct but misleading few-shot demonstrations of the task. We release the winning datasets at https://github.com/inverse-scaling/prize/tree/main/data-release to allow for further investigation of inverse scaling. Our tasks have helped drive the discovery of U-shaped and inverted-U scaling trends, where an initial trend reverses, suggesting that scaling trends are less reliable at predicting the behavior of larger-scale models than previously understood. Overall, our results suggest that there are tasks for which increased model scale alone may not lead to progress, and that more careful thought needs to go into the data and objectives for training language models.We thank everyone who submitted tasks to the Inverse Scaling Prize. WRESTLING 90-91
Wrestlers this year competed in three tournaments:
Cut Bank H.S. Invitational (Cut Bank, Montana),
Ernest Manning Jr.High Invitational(Calgary),
and the Senator Riley H.S. Invitational(High River).
Although no medals were won, wrestlers wrestled
extremely well and should be extremely proud of
their accomplishments.

The choral program at HJH has been extremely successful
this year. All four choirs participated in the Kiwanis
Music Festival in March and did very well. Grade seven
received two marks of good, and grade eight received
three excellents. Two marks of excellent were acheived
by grade nine. Select choir attained excellent and superior
ratings. ”1 stood in The Maytime Meadow”, by Brent
Pierce, was commissioned for the Hamilton Junior High
choir.

This is the first year at Hamilton that there has
been a cooking club. The Cooking Club serves a
lunch to the staff every staff meeting Friday.
Meals have consisted of Chinese food, turkey at
Christmas and at Easter a ham. The members shown

A new dimension in Industrial Arts is the CAD
(Computer Assisted Design) Program. Four Amiga
computers and one printer were loaned to the school
for one year. Many drafting projects were completed
on an IntroCAD Program.

THE HAMILTON 200
FUND RAISER
The students and staff of Hamilton
Junior High School say Thank You
to parents, relatives, friends and
neighbors for the fantastic success
of our fund raiser Hamilton 200
project.
The school wide Hamilton 200 took
place in October when students
canvassed for pledges for their efforts
which involved brains, brawn
and community service.
The overwhelming participation by
the majority of the students resulted
in pledge collections that raised the
fundraiser thermometer red line up,
up and over the anticipated total.
The Funds will be used to support
the many programs offered to the
students at Hamilton.
Hamilton Junior High students'
enthusiasm and energy plus city
business and merchant sponsorship
made a highly successful fundraiser.
