Evaluating skip-stop policy in urban rail transit systems based on passenger cost

    No full text
Increasing the operating speed in public transport systems can increase the system capacity, reduce the overall passenger travel time and improve experienced comfort. Skip-stop operation, where subsets of the trains operating on the same tracks skip certain intermediate stops, can accelerate the service and improve passengers’ overall travel experience. This paper considers the problem of deciding whether skip-stop operation is beneficial for a given line and which stopping scheme is the most effective. In particular, we investigate whether a simple decision rule for determining the stopping pattern under a skip-stop strategy, derived from the expected weighted time benefits to the passengers, can reliably determine the most suitable skip-stop scheme. To evaluate the impact of alternative stop-skipping strategies, we adopt the existing public transit assignment model BusMezzo, which allows for a realistic representation of passengers’ experienced waiting and in-vehicle travel times and the resulting trade-offs between passenger costs and benefits. The decision rule is applied to a set of high-frequency urban rail lines in Stockholm, Sweden. We show that a simple decision rule may not be a robust way of determining a beneficial skip-stop scheme. The results from the case study reveal that the skip-stop operation can have an overall positive impact on passenger generalized travel time but only under certain conditions at the stops along the line

Five reasons to skip college : a reply

    No full text
abstract: Education decisions are among the most important choices people ever make. So we were surprised and disappointed to see an article so loosely reasoned and reckless in its conclusions as “Five Reasons to Skip College” published in Blank Slate at Forbes.com on April 18, 2006. The article never provides a numerical assessment of the costs and benefits of going to college, uses statistics inappropriately and in a way that biases the conclusions against college, contains conceptual errors on how to evaluate the return on a college education, and greatly exaggerates the only substantive criticism of typical evaluations of the financial worth of a college degree.A report from the "Productivity and Prosperity Project: An Analysis of Economic Competitiveness (P3)."Includes bibliographical references (p. 5)

Optimization of Coordinated Flow Control and Skip-stopping Schemes for Urban Rail Stations Considering Platform Carrying Capacity

    No full text
The platform carrying capacity of urban rail transit stations is limited and overcrowding of the platform will lead to serious safety risks for passengers and trains. It is significant to collaborate on the optimization of passenger flow strategy and skip-stopping scheme to alleviate traffic pressure and ensure platform safety. This study proposes and solves the joint optimization problem of coordinated flow control and skip-stopping scheme considering platform carrying capacity. Firstly, platform demand constraints and platform stranded constraints are designed according to the maximum carrying capacity of the platform to control the number of allowable arrivals ensuring platform safety. Secondly, train arrival variable and train stop variable are introduced to generate train skip-stopping index. Finally, considering the characteristics of passengers' continuous arrival and platform carrying capacity, a mixed integer programming model is established to minimize the number of passengers outside the station and the number of passengers stranded on the platform. Based on empirical data, this study takes Beijing Batong line as a case study and uses the established model to generate flow control strategy and skip-stopping schemes for each station during morning rush hours. Experimental results show that compared to the baseline without implementing the two proposed strategies, the proposed collaborative optimization method can effectively reduce the demand for staying at the platform and increase the number of boarding passengers at downstream stations. Thus, the balance between train capacity and passenger flow demand is maintained while ensuring platform safety. Moreover, the proposed method can also avoid overcrowding at downstream stations

IMPROVED INTRA TRANSFORM SKIP MODE IN HEVC

Recent years we have witnessed a striking rise of the compound video, which is generated by computers. The High Efficiency Video Coding standard (HEVC) adopts the intra transform skip mode to improve the coding efficiency of compound video. In this paper, we improve the intra transform skip mode from two aspects. Firstly, we study the statistical character of the intra prediction residual and propose a separate coefficient scan order for the intra transform skip mode. Secondly, we analyze the probability of the intra transform skip mode for different coding unit (CU) sizes and prediction unit (PU) sizes, and then propose one limitation to reduce the applied range of intra transform skip mode. The experimental results show that the first method can achieve 1.6%, 1.1%, and 0.7% luma coding gains on average in terms of BD-rate for class F under HE10-AI, HE10-RA, and HE10-LB conditions respectively; the second method can bring 9% encoder run time reduction with almost the same BD-rate changes. The proposed methods have been partially adopted into HEVC standard.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000351597602023&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Imaging Science & Photographic TechnologyEICPCI-S(ISTP)

Using Skip-Gram Model to Predict from which Show a Given Line is

Text classification has a wide range of usage such as extracting the sentiment out of a product review, analyzing the topic of a document and spam detection. In this research, the text classification task is to predict from which TV-show a given line is. The skip-gram model, originally used to train the Word2Vec sentence embeddings [Mikolov et al, 2013], is adapted to determine the likelihood of occurrence of a sentence in a TV-show. Based on this feature, a classifier is built to perform the task of this research. The results of the cross-validation show that it reaches an accuracy of 58% when running on the transcript data of 3 shows and 43% on 4 shows, while the accuracies of random guessing are supposed to be 33% and 25%. The difference between the neural networks and the skip-gram model becomes smaller when more shows are added to evaluate the model. Among each 5 fold cross-validation of the two models, the best results appear in the midmost iterations.https://github.com/DinaChen/NLP_RPCSE3000 Research ProjectComputer Science and Engineerin

Entity Extraction for Malayalam Social Media Text Using Structured Skip-gram Based Embedding Features from Unlabeled Data

    No full text
AbstractSocial media text is generally informal and noisy but sometimes tends to have informative content. Extracting these informative content such as entities is a challenging task. The main aim of this paper is to extract entities from Malayalam social media text efficiently. The social media corpus used in our system is from FIRE2015 entity extraction task. This data is initially subjected to pre-processing and feature extraction and then proceeds with entity extraction. Apart from the conventional stylometric features like prefixes, suffixes, hash tags etc., and POS tags, unsupervised word embedding features obtained from Structured Skip-gram model are utilized to train the system. The extracted features is given to the Support vector machine classifier to build and train model. Testing of the system resulted in better accuracy than the existing systems evaluated in FIRE2015 tasks. Unsupervised features retrieved using Structured Skip-gram model contributes to the reason for achieving better performance

Altered lymphatic structure and function in pleural anthracosis: Negative role in skip N2 metastasis

博士論文全文, 博士論文要旨, 最終試験結果の要旨, 論文審査の要旨OBJECTIVES: The present study investigated whether or not pleural anthracosis is associated with changes in the pleural lymphatic structures or function, which would interfere with nodal skip metastasis. METHODS: This study comprised 2 different case series. In the first series, we observed pleural lymphatic drainage using near-infrared fluorescent endoscopy by the subpleural injection of indocyanine green immediately after thoracotomy for lung cancer. We also performed a histological assessment of the pleura. In the second series, we reviewed the nodal metastatic pattern (skip or non-skip metastasis) in pathological N2 lung cancer involving the pleura. These findings were compared with the severity of pleural anthracosis, which was quantified by thoracoscopic vision and a software-based imaging analysis. RESULTS: In the first series (n = 42), pleural lymphatic drainage was not visualized in 19 (45%) patients who had relatively severe anthracosis, while it was visualized in the remaining 23 (55%) patients who had relatively minimal anthracosis. Histologically, severe anthracosis was associated with pleural thickening accompanied by a decreased incidence of straight-running lymphatic vessels and, in turn, an increased incidence of short lymphatic vessels, which was suggested to be the result of pleural remodelling. In the second series (n = 53), a skip metastatic pattern was found in 24 (45%) patients who predominantly had less-severe anthracosis, while a non-skip metastatic pattern was found in 29 (55%) patients who predominantly had severe anthracosis. CONCLUSIONS: Pleural anthracosis was associated with pathological changes in the pleural lymphatics and decreased pleural lymphatic drainage, thereby interfering with nodal skip metastasis. The kitab comes from Arabic which means writing, the meaning of the term book is the writing of revelation on sheets that are collected into one book form. Kitab Al-Hikam is the work of Sheikh Ibn-Atha'illah, the third murshid of Tariqah Syadziliyah. Kitab Al-Hikam is intended for travelers (salik), which contains further guidance for every traveler to take a spiritual journey. Kitab Al-Hikam discusses monotheism and morals that lead to Islamic Sufism. Kitab Al-Hikam contains a variety of strict mystic terminology, which refers to various terms in the Qur'an and has a very large number. The problem that often occurs in this research is the difficulty in finding the results of the search for the contents of the Kitab Al-Hikam which refers to various terms in the Qur'an and has a very large number for Muslims. Thus making it difficult for many Muslims to find search results for certain sections of the book in a fast and precise time to understand. Alpha Skip Search algorithm is one of the string-matching algorithms which is the development of the skip search algorithm. The Android-based Al-Hikam application by applying the alpha skip search algorithm is considered very effective to make it easier to learn and understand the contents of the Al-Hikam book because it can be operated anywhere and anytime online or offline. Overcoming these problems, the author designed an android-based Kitab Al-Hikam application using the eclipse juno editor and SQLite database. To minimize the time needed to search for the contents of the designed Al-Hikam book, the author applies the Alpha Skip Search algorithm to make it easier for Muslims to search for the contents of the Al-Hikam book to be studied and understood.Kata kitab berasal dari bahasa arab yang artinya tulisan, arti kitab secara istilah adalah tulisan wahyu pada lembaran-lembaran yang terkumpul menjadi satu bentuk buku.
