    Experimental designs optimally balanced for trend.

    When experiments are carried out over a period of time, the response may be subject to time trends. We use an algorithm for exact optimum designs to construct a series of designs resistant to linear and quadratic trend. Designs considered include the allocation of simple treatments, multifactor designs in qualitative or quantitative factors, and response surface designs. The investigation is extended from consideration of linear ordering in time to include designs with several trials at each time point, designs in which several trials are spread over only one out of three shifts per day, and designs in which there are more time points than experiments. Comparisons with designs in the absence of trend show that surprisingly little information is lost by designing for protection against a potential trend.     Optimum experimental designs depend on the design criterion, the model and the design region. The talk will consider the design of experiments for regression models in which there is a single response with the explanatory variables lying in a simplex. One example is experiments on various compositions of glass such as those considered by Martin, Bursnall, and Stillman (2001). Because of the highly symmetric nature of the simplex, the class of models that are of interest, typically Scheff´e polynomials (Scheff´e 1958) are rather different from those of standard regression analysis. The optimum designs are also rather different, inheriting a high degree of symmetry from the models. In the talk I will hope to discuss a variety of modes for such experiments. Then I will discuss constrained mixture experiments, when not all the simplex is available for experimentation. Other important aspects include mixture experiments with extra non-mixture factors and the blocking of mixture experiments. Much of the material is in Chapter 16 of Atkinson, Donev, and Tobias (2007).     A direct A.C. to A.C. regenerative frequency and voltage converter

    Includes bibliographical references.The reliable variable speed operation of an a. c. machine over a wide speed range is a problem that has received attention for some time. In this thesis a system to permit such operation from a fixed frequency fixed voltage supply is proposed, under the name of the asynchronous modulation converter. This converter is of the cycloconverter family, but is force-commutated and is not synchronised with the supply frequency. The power switching element comprises a power transistor in a diode bridge, coupled to the control circuitry by opto-isolators. The output of the a-mod converter is produced by a "chopper" modulation process and this results in the harmonics present being at frequencies well removed from the fundamental. A feedback system to ensure smooth commutation of the output current from the power switches is described. This feedback system operates by sensing the rate of rise of the inductive voltage surge on the load when a switch is opened to operate a freewheel path switch

    A Convergent Algorithm for Finding KL-Optimum Designs and Related Properties

    Among optimality criteria adopted to select best experimental designs to discriminate between different models, the KL-optimality criterion is very general. A KL-optimum design is obtained from a minimax optimization problem on an infinite-dimensional space. In this paper some important properties of the KL-optimality criterion function are highlighted and an algorithm to construct a KL-optimum design is proposed. It is analytically proved that a sequence of designs obtained by iteratively applying this algorithm converges to the set of KL-optimum designs, provided that the designs are regular. Furthermore a regularization procedure is discussed

    PKL-Optimality Criterion in Copula Models for Efficacy-Toxicity Response

    In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in developing dose finding methods incorporating both efficacy and toxicity outcomes. It is reasonable to assume that efficacy and toxicity are associated; therefore, we need to model their stochastic dependence. Copula functions are very useful tools to model different kinds of dependence with arbitrary marginal distributions. We consider a binary efficacy-toxicity response with logit marginal distributions. Since the dose which maximizes the probability of efficacy without toxicity (P-optimal dose) changes depending on different copula functions, we propose a criterion which is useful for choosing between the rival copula models but also protects patients against doses that are far away from the P-optimal dose. The performance of this compromise criterion (called PKL) is illustrated for different choices of the parameter values

    On the Desirability of Taxing Capital Income in Optimal Social Insurance

    This paper analyzes optimal linear taxes on labor income and savings in a two-period life cycle model with ex ante identical households, endogenous leisure demands in both periods, and general processes of skill shocks over the life cycle. We demonstrate that the Atkinson-Stiglitz theorem breaks down under risk. Capital taxes are employed besides labor income taxes for two distinct reasons: i) capital taxes reduce labor supply distortions on second-period labor supply, since second-period labor supply and saving are substitutes, ii) capital taxes insure first-period income risk, although this benefit is partially off-set because first-period labor supply and saving are complements.
