G.K. Chesterton: Daylight and Nightmare: Uncollected Stories and Fables

    No full text
I have struggled in reading this book to find what Chesterton might have to offer the fable researcher. Perhaps Ms. Smith and even Chesterton himself are not too clear on what a fable is. Consider these two sentences from Smith's Foreword: The shorter fables from this last period are, however, interspersed throughout. All the stories are fantasies of one sort of another (5). Can a fable be a fantasy? I can report that I find many excellent and thought-provoking stories here, particularly The Two Taverns (32); The Three Dogs (48); The Curious Englishman (50); The Tree of Pride (58); Chivalry Begins at Home (76); The Second Miracle (99); Concerning Grocers as Gods (108); On Secular Education (122); and A Fish Story (124). In the end, they are fantasies, and I do not think that they are fables in anything like the traditional sense associated with Aesop. But anything from Chesterton's imagination is lively! This is a hardbound book (hard cover)This book has a dust jacket (book cover)First editionSelected and Arranged by Marie Smit

G.K. Chesterton's Lepanto and the First World War.

    No full text
This thesis examines G.K. Chesterton's poem Lepanto in relation to World War I. Chesterton wrote the poem in 1911, depicting the famous naval battle of Lepanto between the Christian-European Holy League and the Islamic Ottoman Empire that took place in 1571. The forces that Chesterton depicts in the poem can be seen as parallels to contemporary forces in Europe with an understanding of Europe's position on the brink of war at the time of its writing in 1911. Examining books and journal articles that he was writing concurrently, we can see that Lepanto reflected Chesterton's own political views. The poem Lepanto is especially significant not only for its depictions of Christian Europe's internal and external threats, but for its strong emphasis on supernatural spiritual warfare corresponding to the human military action. Chesterton evokes Crusade imagery and stresses the impact of holy war in Lepanto, anticipating a similar situation in pre-WWI Europe. The thesis includes an examination of the historical battle of Lepanto, Chesterton's understanding of war, and a commentary on the poem's text

The words рубеж, порубежный in G.K. Kotoshikhin “About Russia in the reign of Alexei Mikhailovich” were considered in several lexicalsemantic variants (LSV). The revealed means of nomination and predication show the knowledge of the author of certain territories and act as an integral part of the Russian state. It was also established that the content of the studied units is based on a positive-assessment characteristic. These words are characteristic of business presentation materials

Reticular Control of Cortical Unit Activity in the Cat

Title: Reticular Control of Cortical Unit Activity in the Cat, Author: Thomas L. Babb, Location: ThodeExtracellular action potentials were recorded from the suprasylvian gyrus of the cat and compared with slow potentials derived from the overlaying cortical surface in experiments designed to investigate the influences of potine reticular formation on these fast and slow voltage transients. When pontine afferents were blocked by mid-pontine lesion or reversible cooling, the number of recordedable spontaneous and injury discharges was reduced as compared to that recorded from preparations with lower pontine, post-trigeminal, lesions. Bilateral gasserectomies in post-trigeminal preparations did not reduce unit activity. However, the mean and median average firing rates and the patterns of spontaneously-active cells were not demonstrably different fro high and low pontine preparations. Either EEG synchrony or desynchronization was found to co-0exist with either high or low levels of unit activity.ThesisDoctor of Philosophy (PhD

Chesterton. In this academic work we implement the Umberto Eco's theory of textual cooperation –principally the Model Reader– and the Theory of Possible Worlds developed by Tomás Albaladejo. The investigation intends to deepen the commuticative process of G.K Chesterton. In addition, we attempt to study the creative process of the author, his intention and his aims. Particularly, to find his thoughts about the receipt of the detective novel in his readers. The Model Reader theory helps to guess the type of reader that the author conceived. The Theory of Possible Worlds lets consider the perspectives of the characters in order to get the expected surprise in resolving the mystery. We also pay special attention to the storyteller and the focalisation. To conclude, we determine the own characteristics of G.K. Chesterton with his genuine contribution to the detective novel world, especially about the crime, the detetive and the investigation proces

Modification of Cortical Evoked Potential During Induced and Natural Behavioural States in the Hooded Rat

Title: Modification of Cortical Evoked Potential During Induced and Natural Behavioural States in the Hooded Rat, Author: Thomas L. Babb, Location: ThodeCortical potentials evoked by flashes or clicks were studied in the CER situation and found to increase by over 200% when these evoking stimuli served as conditional stimuli (classical conditioning), when neutral flashes were paired with click CS's (compound conditioning), and when flashes followed painful shock (backward conditioning) which sometimes suppressed bar pressing. Similar increases were evoked in other animals during high voltage slow electroencephalographic sleep or drowsiness. Only cortical components (not afferent activity) of the evoked response were found to increase with these different behavioral conditions, but the changes are not attributed to conditioning per se or dependent on immobility.ThesisMaster of Arts (MA
