Setting Up a Computerized Catalog and Distribution Database of Alternative Format Materials for Blind and Visually Impaired Persons in Nigeria
"The purpose of the project discussed in this article was to set up a
computerized catalog and distribution database of alternative materials
for visually impaired people in Nigeria. The project was based on
the need to open wider the gates of information resources, nationally
and internationally, to this category of information users by identifying
the location and availability of resources throughout Nigeria and
creating a database for access and retrieval. Another purpose was to
create a template for database entry, which could be replicated by
other developing countries. A state-by-state survey of educational
institutions, state libraries, and nongovernmental organizations serving
the visually impaired in all of the thirty-six states of Nigeria and
the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) was conducted. Three sets of
data were gathered from a template for data entry of alternative
materials and two questionnaires for institutions and the blind and
visually impaired students. A database was designed and created using
Microsoft Access. An American Disability Act (ADA) compliant
Web site was designed, which has a ""text-only"" version for browsing
by visually impaired persons (see www.alvi-laris.org)."Submitted by Kaitlin Costello ([email protected]) on 2008-02-29T22:09:18Z

Factors Affecting Online Public Access Catalogue Provision And Sustainable Use By Undergraduates In Two Selected University Libraries In Ogun And Oyo States, Nigeria.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Correlations Among Availability of Information and Communication Technology, ICT Skills, Perceived Ease-of-use and Use Electronic Resources by Law Lecturers in Nigerian Public Universities
Law lecturers occupy a vintage position in producing legal experts who will later constitute the bar and benches in the society. However, as global as the profession is, there seems to be existence of some challenges in electronic resources use by law lecturers in public universities in Nigeria. Previous studies on the issue largely focused on strategies for improving the use of ER with little consideration for the extent to which availability of Information and Communication Technology, ICT skills, and perceived ease-of- use could influence the use of ER. Therefore, the study investigated the influence of the availability of ICT, ICT skills (applications, text creation, access and manipulation, database, and the Internet Communication skills) and perceived-ease-of-use on the use of ER by law lecturers in public universities in Nigeria. Survey research design was adopted. Four hundred and twenty (420) law lecturers, 247(58.8%) male and 173(41.2%) female participated in the study. There were significant positive relationships among availability of ICT and use of electronic resources by law lecturers (r =0.21), and ICT skills and use of electronic resources (r=0.22) while perceived ease-of-use of ICT did not. Availability of ICT, ICT skills and perceived ease-of-use, jointly influenced the use of electronic resources (F (2,416) =4.90, R2=0.26). The relative contributions of the independent variables to the use of electronic resources were: availability of ICT (β=.14, t=2.01); ICT skills (β =.14, t=1.87) and perceived ease-of-use of ICT (β =0.20, t=.27). Availability of Information and Communication Technology, Information and Communication Technology skills and ease-of-use of Information and Communication Technology influenced the use of electronic resources by law lecturers in public universities in Nigeria. ICT and other basic infrastructure in appreciable quantity should be provided by the government and the management of the universities for use of the law lecturers and, Publicity of the acquired electronic resources and their contents. A Comparative Study of Captioned Video and Face-to-Face Instruction in Library Instruction for Secondary School Students with Hearing Impairment
This study compared the effects of captioned video instruction and face-to-face instruction on library use instruction of secondary school students with hearing impairment. This study adopted the quasi-experimental pre-test, post -test control group design. This study employed two treatment groups comprising captioned video instruction group and face to face instruction group as well as a control group. Two research instruments, Library Use Instruction Test and Library Practical Use Checklist were used as data collection tools. The study concluded that both instructional strategies are effective in giving library instructions to persons with hearing impairmen

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
