Mount Athos: Between autonomy and statehood
No full textLegal status of the Mount Athos is characterized by many special features that make it internationally unique legal regime. The author analyzes peculiarities of Mount Athos territorial status, legal position of residents and visitors, as well as organization of Mount Athos authorities. The author concludes that the Mount Athos is characterized by a kind of para-sovereignty. Its autonomy involves not only the internal organization, autonomous governance and religious autonomy, but it also includes many elements of secular life of their visitors. Mount Athos has its own, separate legislative, administrative and judicial powers, while the Statute of the Mount Athos has greater legal force than all the other laws of the Greek state, because the state can not unilaterally change its provisions. Having in mind that the wide self-government is vested in church authorities and that the monks have very specific way of living, the author takes a position that the Mount Athos represent 'monastic state', but without statehood. The author also states that the Mount Athos will be faced with many challenges in the context of spreading of an assimilating, universal conception of human rights
Athos Burez Barok Burez at Mas Antwerpen
No full textAs part of 'Antwerp Baroque 2018: Rubens as an inspiration', the MAS will be welcoming the photographer and artist Athos Burez to the boulevard as from 1 June 2018. With 80 images and installations, he shares his own unique and contemporary view on different genres from the style period: still lifes, portraits, landscapes and interiors. Burez' work is characterised by an almost surrealist view of familiar images, often giving the impression that his photographs float between two worlds. In this exhibition, he joins old Baroque aspects with elements of contemporary imagery by means of an often contrasting approach. As a result, a completely new and unique Baroque image culture arises where the abundance and diversity of the period is tangible yet everything seamlessly comes together as if in a collage. It is the first time that Athos' work will be exhibited in a solo exhibition in Antwer

No full textA partire dalla considerazione che categorie come instabilitas e peregrinatio rappresentano premesse indispensabili per comprendere molti dei rapporti che si stabilirono, nell’Italia meridionale medievale, tra i monaci e le istituzioni latine ma anche con i territori orientali e, tra essi, il monte Athos, nel saggio si indagano i rapporti, culturali ma anche segnati da presenze fisiche, tra il monachesimo occidentale e quello athonita. All’interno di un fenomeno più generale, che spingeva i monaci latini verso il mondo orientale, e nella consapevolezza che esso ci sia tramandato soprattutto dalle fonti agiografiche, si analizzano le relazioni con l’Athos di alcuni monaci italo-greci, come Fantino il Giovane, Niceforo il Nudo e Bartolomeo di Simeri; per passare poi alle testimonianze di conoscenza reciproca tra il monachesimo athonita e quello meridionale, documentate soprattutto dalla conoscenza che sull’Athos si aveva della Regola di s. Benedetto e dalla circolazione nell’Italia del Sud dei codici contenenti le opere dei due riformatori del monachesimo bizantino, Teodoro di Studio e Atanasio Athonita. Infine, si esaminano il viaggio del cassinese Giovanni sul monte Athos, nell’ultimo decennio del X secolo, e si ripercorre la storia del terzo monastero di rito latino attestato sulla Montagna, oltre quelli del “Calabrese” e del “Siciliano”, e cioè il cosiddetto cenobio “degli Amalfitani”, attestato a partire dal 1010

Protection of public order and security on Mount Athos
No full textProtection of public order and security on Mount Athos is associated with geographical features of the terrain, historical facts, diplomatic pretensions and conflicts, and above all the spiritual needs of the Orthodox monastic community that exists there for centuries. Mount Athos is still inaccessible and isolated peninsula, with no road network that would connect all the monasteries. The monks who live on Mount Athos are originally from most different parts of the world, so linguistic and cultural differences can be also one of the challenges for police forces of Mount Athos. Since the beginning of Mount Athos' history, monks were living in lodgings of different size and construction quality (cells, skeate etc.). All these monastic lodging types exist until today. Some of them are situated in very in very isolated and desolate areas. Protection of these objects is difficult, especially if we know that in many such monastic cells we can find precious gifts that believers, including many rulers, donated to the monks. The monks on Mount Athos since earliest times formed some kind of organization with its own, separate legislative, administrative and judicial powers. In all periods of history of Mount Athos protection of public order and security was in some way under the jurisdiction of monastic administrative organs. When the civil authorities were introduced to the Holy Mountain in the 17th century one of their main duties was to supervise the protection of public order and security on Mount Athos. Today the Civil Governor of Mount Athos took full responsibility for the protection of public order and security. Under his rule are units of the Greek police, which are distributed throughout the peninsula. The Hellenic Police (including the forces in Mount Athos) is facing challenges, like the lack of manpower, equipment and vehicles. In addition, there appeared new challenges specific to the Mount Athos: illegal immigrants and increased traffic intensity due to the large number of visitors. From the above it can be concluded that the current system of protecting public order is not able to protect sufficiently the monasteries of Mount Athos and their dependencies. The author concludes that the Hellenic Police forces in Mount Athos should be supported by other orthodox countries and their police forces without a violation of Greek sovereignty over Mount Athos. That would be the most efficient way to eliminate the lack of manpower, equipment and resources, and also to achieve a higher level of protection of the monks of non-Greek origin
