Politics, Society and Culture in Orthodox Theology in a Global Age

    No full text
The articles in the book show that today’s Orthodox theology is constructively relating to modernity in politics, society and culture. In 20 articles very prominent Orthodox theologians and experts on Orthodox theology and Orthodox Christianity from academic fields like sociology of religion or political studies are discussing, in what sense politics, society and culture are considered in Orthodox Theology in a global horizon. Contributors are Alfons Brüning, Ina Merdjanova, Nathaniel Wood, Cyril Hovorun, Dimitrios Moschos, Lucien Turcescu, K. M. George (Kondortha), Pantelis Kalaitzidis, Branko Sekulić, Georgios Vlantis, Nikolaos Asproulis, Atanas Slavov, Sveto Riboloff, Haralambos Ventis, Ioannis Kaminis, Irena Pavlović, Athanasios N. Papathanasiou, Chris Durante, Kateřina Kočandrle Bauer, Vasilios N. Makrides

Un livre reçu par le patriarche Athanase Ier et retourné à l’expéditeur

The (unedited) prooimion of the Philosophia of George Pachymeres permits the identification of this author with the addressee of a letter of Athanasius I in which the patriarch mentions returning a book to the sender on account of its contents. We can thus follow the development of the conflict between the two men and better understand the historical context of Pachymeres’s Philosophia. Golitsis Pantelis. Capacity Statistics Evaluation for Next Generation Broadband MEO Satellite Systems

    No full text
In this paper, the performance of a reference medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite constellation system operating at Ka-band and employing single links to ground is compared with next generation advanced systems in higher RF or optical bands employing multiple diversity links. The fill rate of existing MEO constellations offering broadband and trunking services in Ka-band is growing fast, rendering the search for additional spectrum of vital importance. Therefore, this paper reports on the results of a system study investigating the option of using Q/V-band, or even optical wavelengths, instead of Ka-band, to deliver substantially higher system capacity. The system study takes a holistic approach covering from atmospheric channel impairments to waveform optimization and system analysis for realistic assumptions. After proposing a sophisticated channel model to generate spatio-temporal time series of atmospheric attenuation, an optimization of the performance at physical layer is performed to derive the inputs necessary to the system analysis. Five different advanced high frequency RF and optical systems are compared in terms of outage capacity and availability for various locations of single ground stations, multiple ground stations (site diversity) and from multiple satellites (orbital diversity). For maximizing the realism of the comparison, similar on board satellite resources (mass, power) are assumed for all scenarios

Book Review of Global Nuclear Developments: Insights from a Former IAEA Nuclear Inspector by Pantelis F. Ikonomou

    No full text
With a touching dedication to his grandchildren “in the hope that they will live in a world free of nuclear weapons,” a sentiment shared by numerous professionals working in the nuclear security and disarmament circuits, Pantelis F. Ikonomou sets the perfect stage for what is to follow in this excellent work. The author brings in his career-long expertise from important and sensitive programs, projects, and missions he has served in with the mother of all nuclear 3S (safety, safeguards, and security) organizations, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

Metabolomics in Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Research and the Potential of Deep Learning in Bridging the Gap

    No full text
During the past several years, there has been a shift in terminology from bariatric surgery alone to bariatric and metabolic surgery (BMS). More than a change in name, this signifies a paradigm shift that incorporates the metabolic effects of operations performed for weight loss and the amelioration of related medical problems. Metabolomics is a relatively novel concept in the field of bariatrics, with some consistent changes in metabolite concentrations before and after weight loss. However, the abundance of metabolites is not easy to handle. This is where artificial intelligence, and more specifically deep learning, would aid in revealing hidden relationships and would help the clinician in the decision-making process of patient selection in an individualized way

The interpretation of intentionality from dynamic scenes:

This thesis explores how the mind uses the motion of animate objects to make inferences about these objects' underlying mental states, intentions, goals, or dispositions. We present dynamic scenes to subjects in which autonomously programmed triangular "agents"' interact with each other and--in two of the experiments--an additional agent that is controlled by the subject. We strive for the autonomous agents to be simple in their underlying programming but to also engage in a rich array of lifelike behaviors. Subjects watch short simulations populated with these agents and then are asked questions designed to probe their perceptions of the similarities among the agents' behaviors. We use the responses to derive a multidimensional scaling (MDS) solution for the agents in our set. The aim is to relate this MDS solution to the underlying programming on one hand, and to also discover interesting structure in subjects' perception of the "agent space." Clusters in this space, for example, could provide insight into the perceptual biases subjects bring to the experiment for which types of agents are a priori more likely to be observed. The most robust result from the experiments is that subjects, in making inferences about an agent's intentions, pay special attention to how the agent reacts when another agent is at a "critical distance" of about 10-17.5 agent lengths away.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 26-27)by Peter C. Concentration in Knowledge Output:A Case of Economics Journals

    No full text
Journals moderate knowledge activity in economics. The activity of publishing article in professional journal forms significant part of knowledge output. Output of economics articles has been growing over the time. We examine an important question: Is there any case of institutional or location concentration in knowledge production? This paper analyses concentration indicators specific to economics journals and explores link between publication process and concentration. The analysis of various concentration measures present evidence for institutional-geographic-area-author concentration in Knowledge production in Economics. High concentration levels indicate possibility of institutional lock-in. The literature provides evidence for myopic refereeing, editorial favouritism and the presence of ‘lock-in’ effect. The achievement in journal publication is influenced by factors like institutional affiliation, propitious circumstances etc. Discussion carried out in this paper hints the possibility of causal link between unfair process and unfair outcome.Knowledge,Lotka's Law,Fourier Series
