Credit, income, and causality: A contemporary co-integration analysis

    No full text
In this study, we investigate the macroeconomic fundamental issue of causal relationship between credit and money income, for the US postwar economy, along the lines of the "Credit-View" theorists. In the long-run, we provide significant evidence that credit causes income. Further, we support the view that there is a rather weak causality effect from income to credit, in the long-run. Indeed, we identified that there is a dynamic causality effect in the short-run, from income changes to credit ones. A contemporary co-integration analysis is applied, using the maximum likelihood method. Additionally, considering the formulated VAR, a stability analysis of the equivalent first order dynamic system has been performed. Finally, dynamic forecasts from the corresponding ECVAR (Error Correction VAR) are obtained, in order to verify the validity of the co-integration vector used. It may be useful to mention, that we have not met in the relevant literature, the type of forecasting presented here.Economics Credit Money income growth Co-integration VAR and ECVAR models Irreversible variables Singular values

Value Co-Creation in Services: An Economic Perception on the State of the Art in Economics, I.C.T. vs. Marketing

AbstractThe World Trade Organization (WTO) states that almost two-thirds of the global output produced and almost 20 percent of the global trade accounts for the upcoming “service sector”. Since many products now are transformed into services, the old fashioned dichotomy between product and service has been replaced by the current service - product continuum business function. In pure economics, it was quite safe, so far, that the output produced “Q”, represented by famous production function(s) (i.e. Cobb-Douglas) would be a tangible good. Now the production of services displays the same level of diversity pending upon capital intensity, level of innovation and growth prospects.A service system can be defined as a dynamic value co-creation scheme of combined resources that creates and delivers value. Two service systems are shortly analyzed here, e-health and tourism services. We conclude upon the needed quantification of the value co-creation process, in order to produce concrete experimental outcomes, in terms of the positive scientific foundations of economics, thus affecting the economic efficiency of service production, along the lines of transaction cost economics

An eclectic credit cycle search : the case of US, Japan and Germany

Credit crunches, quantitative easing and especially international credit cycles are all monetary facets of the still ongoing global economic crisis and financial turmoil. This paper investigates global credit cycle fundamental characteristics, among three leading economies; that is, the USA, Japanese and German. Our statistically sophisticated time series data come from the Bank of International Settlements (BIS) open source. These valuable data cover the period of complete time series, from 1970(Q1) up to 2015(Q1), covering the whole data availability period for these three economic leaders. We indicate that during the 70’s and the first decade of the 21st century, we face significant statistical evidence that credit supply shocks in particular, in economies that lead capitalism globally, affect each other economy quite seriously. The credit data confirm more the presence of an international credit cycle, in the sense that credit growth rates, in these three leading economies in particular, move together over time. We also verify, through classic impulse response analysis, that US credit supply shocks have a stronger effect upon the Japanese and German credit supply variable, for both the 1973 and most significantly the 2008 financial crisis years.peer-reviewe

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Real convergence in EU-15 : a comparative analysis of North versus South Europe

    Get PDF
Purpose: The paper looks at the issue of absolute and conditional income convergence in the EU-15 States, focusing upon the growth incidence of certain fundamental economic variables, along with corruption and bureaucracy. Design/Methodology/Approach: Applying advanced panel data techniques, dating from 1995 up to 2012, we focus on two discrete European State groups. The first group consists of the Southern EU countries (i.e. Greece Belgium, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal) and, the second group of the Northern EU countries (i.e. Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden, UK). Findings: The results demonstrate that investment share, human capital and country openness appear as robust growth drivers; whereas, inflation and government consumption hamper growth. However, corruption and bureaucracy seem to affect differently growth of the two groups of the European States. Practical Implications: Certain policy implications and obligations accrue to the Southern European countries vs. the Northern European ones, with respect to the effects and consequences of specific fundamental economic variables, along with corruption and bureaucracy, towards the absolute and conditional income convergence in the EU-15. Originality/Value: Macroeconomic policies that affect economic growth, directly through their effect on physical and human capital accumulation and macroeconomic stability, reflected in low and stable rates of inflation and government consumption, would indeed increase growth in EU. Taking advantage of the European integration, in terms of real convergence, institutions seem also quite essential ingredients.peer-reviewe

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
