Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Bien común: la relevancia del pensamiento económico de Alberto Hurtado en el Chile actual
Get PDFThe complexity of today's Chile allows us to reflect on the validity of Alberto Hurtado's speech, specifically in the present social and economic situation, in light of his work Is Chile a Catholic Country?, from 1941. This arises in the context of an ideological polarization that brought political and social impacts as a result of the transition from the parliamentary to the presidential regime. This confrontation even led to the prevalence of armed violence over ideas, as a result of the lack of political agreements, accompanied by international economic problems, which generated unrest in public life. Governance was seen restricted by partisan struggle, according to a dynamic in which the parties competed for power with tricks and unfulfilled promises, what Hurtado called “politicking.”
Hence, the figure of Alberto Hurtado takes on significant relevance, since he emerges in a context in which it is mainly oligarchic groups that take possession of the State, establishing agreements that benefited themselves, without attention to the misery of the large Chilean population; This situation was far from the principles, values and teachings of the Church, which failed to permeate the elites or influence the working conditions and economy of the time. One of the main problems detected by the Jesuit was related to the ostentatious consumption of goods and services by the people who had access to them, a situation that led him to question the Catholic values of the society of his time. Today, in Chile in 2023, the question arises: what would be the ideal behavior that a Catholic should adopt in the economic sphere?
This article seeks to offer a perspective based on the thinking of Alberto Hurtado, considering how his vision of the economy and business ethics could make a contribution to the common good in Chile today. To this end, we do not delve into economic and technical aspects exhaustively since Hurtado, since it is not the goal that the Jesuit saint pursued in his time.La complejidad del Chile de hoy permite reflexionar sobre la vigencia del discurso de Alberto Hurtado, concretamente en la situación social y económica presente, a la luz de su obra ¿Es Chile un país católico?, de 1941. Esta surge en el contexto de una polarización ideológica que trajo impactos políticos y sociales a consecuencia de la transición del régimen parlamentario al presidencialista. Este enfrentamiento llevó incluso a la prevalencia de la violencia armada sobre las ideas, como resultado de la falta de acuerdos políticos, acompañada de problemáticas económicas internacionales, lo que generó malestar en la vida pública. La gobernanza se vio restringida por la lucha partidista, según una dinámica en la que los partidos competían por el poder con artimañas y promesas incumplidas, lo que Hurtado llamó “politiquería”.
De ahí que la figura de Alberto Hurtado cobra una relevancia significativa, ya que emerge en un contexto en el que principalmente son los grupos oligárquicos los que toman posesión del Estado, estableciéndose acuerdos que redundaban en beneficio de sí mismos, sin atención a la miseria de la gran población chilena; esta situación distaba de los principios, valores y enseñanzas de la Iglesia, que no lograban permear a las élites ni incidir en las condiciones laborales y la economía de la época. Uno de los principales problemas detectados por el jesuita se relacionaba con el consumo ostentoso de bienes y servicios por parte de las personas que tenían acceso a ellos, situación que lo llevó a cuestionar los valores católicos de la sociedad de su tiempo. Hoy, en el Chile de 2023, surge la pregunta: ¿cuál sería la conducta ideal que debería adoptar un católico en el ámbito económico?
Este artículo busca ofrecer una perspectiva basada en el pensamiento de Alberto Hurtado, considerando cómo su visión de la economía y de la ética de los negocios podría hacer un aporte al bien común en el Chile de hoy. Con este fin, no nos adentramos en aspectos económicos y técnicos de manera exhaustiva desde Hurtado, pues no es el fin que el santo jesuita perseguía en su tiempo.
