Mitigation of arsenic, iron and sulfur leachates and revegetation from mined substrates in acid mine drainage occurrence area
Sulfide mineral exploration shows large environmental risks when these materials are exposed to the surface. These minerals can be oxidized producing acid waters, known mining activities as acid mining drainage. These waters can reach the water table and channels, with high content of metals (Pb, Cd, Ni, etc.) and metalloids (As, B, etc), becoming solubilized by the process, and toxic to the food chain. The present work aimed to evaluate different acid drainage reducing practices and revegetation procedures, by laboratory and field experiments. In the laboratory experiment, lysimeters were tested with different combinations of cover, saddle and capillarity broken layers. For this last layer, additional treatments were used with sodium oxalic (saddle) and geochemical barrier induction (neoformation of jarosite and, or natrojarosite). Layers were constructed with different materials, all placed over a low oxidized sulfide containing-substrate (B2), forming 12 treatments, plus the reference (B2 substrate), in a incomplete factorial casualised blocks design. The water application was carried out at twice the monthly rain amount, observed at Paracatu-MG. The experiment was carried out during 24 months, and leached waters were collected from each lysimeter every month, to quantify the total volume and to determine As, Fe, S, Na and K contents, and pH value. After the end of the experimental time, lysimeters were opened to collect samples from B2 substrate, aiming to verify jarosite and, or natrojarosite neoformation and, from the cover layer, to determine chemical composition in terms of its revegetation potential. The best results the leachates showed lower amount of As, Fe and S, were found with the geochemical barrier induction-treaments. Jarosite formation could be observed by Mössbauer spectroscopy. Although some treatments have produced lower amounts of As, Fe and S in the leachates, none of those reduced its acidity. The pH of the leachates remained close to 3.0. The cover layer had low influence to the metals leaching, but the use of clay produced better results, probably because its As adsorption capacity. The presence of capillarity broken layers is very important due, probably, to promote a humidity gradient, reducing the amounts the As, Fe and S in the leached. The use of sodium oxalic in this layer did not produce any significant effect, showing no difference among treatments in terms of the amount of leached. The greatest Na and K leaching were obtained with the treatments which received the addition of these elements to geochemical barrier induction, being more intensive Na leaching, favoring jarosite formation instead natrojoraosite. The field experiment was set in March, 2000 with the aim to evaluate the effect of the B1 substrate (ore with low sulfide content) and clay as saddle and cover layers, to promote plant growth. Four treatments were set with different combinations of these materials forming the layers, and where shrubs and trees seedlings from nine species were planted. Height and steam diameter were determined along the experimental time. Superficial (0-20 cm) soil available As was also determinate for each treatment. The clay use in both layers showed better results, allowing more survival and growth for plants. The absence of clay in both layers resulted death for all species and more availability of As. Among species, outstanding performance was observed to Acacia holosericea with higher biomass production and good survival rate. Flemingia sp., Enterolobium timabuva and Acacia polyphylla showed lowers biomass production.
The growing demand for energy has pushed the development of more efficient
systems and technologies and diversification of supply sources, especially
renewable and clean energy. Brazil is considered one of the countries that have
the best conditions for sustainable production of ethanol and the potential of being
the largest producer. Thus, in addition to sugar cane which already represents
18.2% of primary energy sources in Brazil, other crops that can contribute to the
diversification of the energy matrix of the country need to be studied. Among the
starchy crops, sweet potato has been the subject of research for more than a
decade by researchers at the Federal University of Tocantins (UFT). The result of
these studies, if structured a breeding program aimed to increase the biomass of
sweet potato, for the production of ethanol. These studies resulted in of cultivars
with yields between 32 and 65 t ha-1 under the conditions of the State of Tocantins
and increases of 10% to 15% in starch. It is noteworthy that the planting of
cultivars with high productivity does not guarantee the optimization of ethanol
production, as well as its sustainability, where a major challenge is the need to
know the nutritional requirement related to absorption efficiency and fertilizer
management. This work included conducting an experiment at the Experimental
Station of the Federal University of Tocantins, UFT, Palmas, where the cultivars of
sweet potato Marcela, Amanda and Duda, obtained from the breeding program of
the UFT, were evaluated according of different doses of N, P2O5 and K2O applied
to the soil. The experiment comprised 33 treatments arranged in a randomized
block design with four replications. At 90 days of culture samples were taken from
leaves and soil for characterization of foliar N, P and K and the availability of
nutrients in the soil. At the end of the crop cycle cultivars, shoots and roots of the
plants were harvested for characterization of biomass (leaves and stems) of shoot,
root yield and starch content. Foliar N, P and K, obtained after 90 days of culture,
showed no significant differences among cultivars. Comparing the yield obtained
with the control treatment (without NPK fertilization, soil with 5 mg dm-3 of P, 145
mg dm-3) among the three cultivars, the highest yield was obtained with Duda
followed by Amanda and Marcela. Moreover, when considering the average yield
obtained from each cultivar due to different doses of nutrients Marcela showed the greatest response to fertilization, with 95 % productivity increase (from 14 t ha-1 to
27, 3 t ha-1) followed by Amanda with 52 % (13.6 t ha-1 to 22.6 t ha-1) and Duda
with 28% (33.0 t ha-1 to 47.0 t ha- 1). The greater efficiency of nitrogen fertilization
(324 kg kg-1) was obtained with a dose of 240 kg ha-1 with Amanda, while
phosphorus (207 kg kg-1) and potassium (224 kg kg-1) with the dose of 300 kg ha-1
with the cultivar Duda. Productivity and starch content in the storage roots varied
depending on the cultivar and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium applied to the
soil. Cultivar Duda accumulated more nutrients in the leaves, but that was the
least accumulated nutrients in the stems and roots than the other cultivars,
however, showed the highest average productivity. On the other hand, the cultivar
Amanda had the highest exports of nutrients in their stems and roots. The
increase of biomass of roots resulted in the tendency of decrease in starch
concentration, indicating a dilution effect. The recommended doses of N and P2O5
for Amanda cultivar were higher than those recommended for other cultivars,
whereas the highest dose of K2O was recommended to cultivate Duda.O crescimento da demanda por energia tem pressionado o desenvolvimento de
Universidade Federal do Tocantins (UFT).
A maior
A cultivar Amanda
As doses
Adsorption and availability of arsenic in soils with different mineralogical compositions
Heavy metals and toxic metalloids presence in different environments (air, water, soil, etc.) have caused constant environmental and public health concern. Arsenic (As) is a metalloid with great toxicity potential and its overall concentrations on natural soils is about 5 to 6 mg kg-1. However, physical, chemical and mineralogical soil characteristics play a fundamental hole an As mobility and transfer to the food chain. The aim of this study was to characterize the adsorption of As and evaluate the potential of different chemical extractants to predict the As availability in soils with different mineralogical compositions. The experiment was set up using five soils type: three Latossols, one Argisol and one Cambisol, presenting clay or heavy clay texture. The soils received five doses of As, ranging from 0 to 1,060 mg dm-3, which was corresponding to 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 times the maximum adsorption capacity of As (CMAAs). The soils were cultivated with sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) and crotalaria (Crotalaria spectabilis). These species were selected trying to contrast the sensitive species with tolerant species to As. The available As in the soil was evaluated by five extractants: Mehlich 1, Mehlich 3, Ca(H2PO4)2 (Ca(H2PO4)2 7.43 mmol L-1 with acetic acid), DTPA and anion exchange resin (AR-103 QDP). Clay samples were submitted to X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis, allowing, together with data from chemical characterization, to estimate the soil mineralogical composition. The CMAAs was estimated adjusting the data to the Langmuir isotherm. Before the cultivation, the soil pH´s was adjusted to 5.5 and As applied in the form of As2O3, properly prepared to obtain exclusively +5 valence. Three months after the planting time, all plant material was collected (root, stem and leaf) for determination of biomass production and the As content (ICP-OES). The soils showed a large clay proportion, reflecting the CMAAs, which varied from 1.21 to 2.65 g kg-1, with higher values belonging to Latossols. There was also wide variation in the amounts of hematite (Hm), goethite (Gt), gibbsite (Gb) and kaolinite (Ka). The CMAAs correlated significantly with the Gb and Ct amount, being positive for the first mineral and negative for the second. Hm and Gt minerals alone did not show significant correlation, however the sum of these minerals showed the best correlation with CMAAs. The soil attribute that best predicts the CMAAs was the content of iron extracted by ditionite- citratebicarbonate. By assessing the chemical methods to estimate the available As, there was a significant correlation between the available content by different extractants and the As-sorghum content. For that plant, all the chemical extractants showed significant correlation, being the highest correlation coefficient obtained for Ca(H2PO4)2 and the smallest for resin. The available As content by DTPA and resin, however, were close to zero even at the highest levels of As applied where expressive As contents were observed in the plant. Therefore, these extractants showed no ability to predict the soil available As. Adjusting regression equations between available As content and applied doses, greater sensitivity to different chemical, physical and mineralogical soil could be observed by the Ca(H2PO4)2 extractor, having greater sensitivity to arsenate buffer capacity of the soils. Thus, the predictive ability of available As in the soils follows this order: Ca(H2PO4)2> Mehlich 3> Mehlich 1. The total As soil content that leads to a 50% of biomasss reduction (T50) was about 420 mg dm-3 for crotalaria and 634 mg dm-3 for sorghum. These values correspond to the content available by Ca(H2PO4)2 extractor, 29.05 and 51.27 mg dm-3 for the crotalaria and sorghum, respectively. Therefore, available As content that leads to 50% of biomass reduction is approximately 7.5% of the total As in the soil. This shows that the use of total content, legislation adopted by Brazil, is very conservative, respecting the principle of precaution.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superio
Deep soil preparation and fertilization for planting conilon coffee
Solos coesos. Subsolo. In the State of Espírito Santo the conilon coffee “Coffea canephora” has great economic importance, being this the biggest producer in Brazil, responsible for 75% of the national production. During the exploratory survey of soils in the state of Espírito Santo, the term "cohesive" soil was initially used to distinguish subsurface mineral horizons from soils that were at least hard, when dry, and friable to firm, when wet. Coffee trees are perennial plants that need adequate root development to reach good yields. The physical limitations of the subsurface soil, caused by natural densification, hinder root development, limiting access to nutrients and water. Thus, deep soil preparation, together with mineral and organic fertilization, may reduce or eliminate restrictions on root growth in deep soil layers. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of deep soil preparation and mineral and organic fertilization on coffee productivity and quality. The experiment was carried out in the municipality of São Gabriel da Palha-ES, a region with typically cohesive soils. The experiment was carried in a simple arrangement, with five treatments combining soil preparation and fertilization, in a randomized block design, with four replications, where: T1: soil preparation at 60 cm, standard fertilization; T2: soil preparation at 60 cm, mineral fertilizer, chicken litter and biochar; T3: 150 cm deep soil preparation, mineral fertilization; T4: Deep soil preparation at 150 cm, mineral fertilizer and chicken litter; T5: 150 cm deep soil preparation, mineral fertilizer, chicken litter and biochar. The results show an increase in productivity of up to 30% with the deep preparation of the soil, with mineral and organic fertilization in relation to the producer control. The evaluation of the nutritional status of the plants showed similarities between treatments, with no nutritional limitations for yield. The results show that the reduction or elimination of chemical restrictions of cohesive soils is an important practice for conilon coffee yields. Keywords: Coffea canephora. Cohesive soils. Subsoil
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Organic fertilization and emissions of greenhouse gases in the recovery of iron ore beneficiation tailing dam
Iron ore is the main mineral product exported by Brazil. However, inherent to the ore beneficiation process is the tailings generation that are deposited in dams. Yet, these tailing commonly do not exhibit physical and chemical characteristics that are suitable for the growth of plants, thus the importance of conducting experiments to define appropriate practices in order to recover these dams. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of organic fertilization (sewage sludge and compost) on the revegetation of iron ore beneficiation tailing with the Crotalaria juncea (crotalaria). The tailing was collected in a dam called Forquillha III of Unidade de Fábrica - VALE, which is located in the city of Ouro Preto - MG. The experimental units were columns constituted by four overlapped rings of PVC. The amount of tailing used was sufficient to obtain a column of 30 cm height. To all treatments were added a 10 cm layer of topsoil on the top of the column. The amount of sewage sludge (5.24 t ha-1) and compost (30 t ha-1) applied was based on nitrogen content of these compounds. The rates of absolute growth in height, stem diameter and dry matter of the aerial part and roots were determined. Furthermore, the C-CO2 and C-CH4 fluxes of the treatments and the direct contribution of the organic fertilization and plant on the C-CO2 emissions, by partitioning of C-CO2, as well as its indirect contribution, through the priming effect. The organic fertilization was effective to provide greater plant growth in the absence of chemical fertilization, although, the use of sewage sludge (5.24 t ha-1) and compost (30 t ha-1) did not differ in regard to the effect on the growth of plants. The organic fertilization treatments showed an increase in C-CO2 emissions by direct and indirect effects. The application of organic fertilization triggered the positive priming effect causing loss of native C. On the other hand, the presence of plants in treatments with chemical fertilization reversed this scenario, contributing to maintaining the native C through the negative priming effect. Furthermore, the treatments showed absorption of C-CH4, acting as drain of methane.Empresa Mineração da Vale no Quadrilátero Ferrífero e/ ou Carajá
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
