The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H.A. Rey
Many years ago, two Jewish artists from Germany met in Brazil, started a business, fell in love, and got married. The Brazilians could not pronounce their German names, so the couple shortened them to H.A. and Margret Rey. While honeymooning in Europe, the Reys decided to stay in Paris so H.A. could pursue a career as a children\u27s book author and illustrator. During this time, H.A. started developing stories about a curious little monkey, influenced by the many monkeys he saw in Brazil. But Hitler\u27s forces delayed H.A.\u27s plans for the little monkey until he and Margret could safely escape Europe
Out and All About: Fables for Old and Young
The title-page is missing in this book, and the only reference on the web is to a reprint of a book before 1923. At least this reference gives us an author. “Routledge” appears on the spine. I read only the first fable, “The Spider and the Ants,” which lasted some 20 pages and seemed to me to lose some of its focus along the way. The book is generously illustrated with partial-page black-and-white illustrations of various sizes along the way. Antibiotic removal from water: Elimination of amoxicillin and ampicillin by microscale and nanoscale iron particles
Zerovalent iron powder (ZVI or Fe0) and nanoparticulate ZVI (nZVI or nFe0) are proposed as cost-effective materials for the removal of aqueous antibiotics. Results showed complete removal of Amoxicillin (AMX) and Ampicillin (AMP) upon contact with Fe0 and nFe0. Antibiotics removal was attributed to three different mechanisms: (i) a rapid rupture of the β-lactam ring (reduction), (ii) an adsorption of AMX and AMP onto iron corrosion products and (iii) sequestration of AMX and AMP in the matrix of precipitating iron hydroxides (co-precipitation with iron corrosion products). Kinetic studies demonstrated that AMP and AMX (20 mg L-1) undergo first-order decay with half-lives of about 60.3 ± 3.1 and 43.5 ± 2.1 min respectively after contact with ZVI under oxic conditions. In contrast, reactions under anoxic conditions demonstrated better degradation with t1-2 of about 11.5 ± 0.6 and 11.2 ± 0.6 min for AMP and AMX respectively. BCIT integrated grid laboratory planning framework
This paper presents a planning framework for an educational training facility designed to incorporate exposure to equipment and scenarios seen in modern power systems, such as islanded microgrids, distributed renewable generation, and new information and communications technologies. The overall architecture is geared towards addressing skills and training gaps in undergraduate “power systems” education. The design principles make this laboratory safe, robust, scalable, modular, and expandable and can therefore also be considered for transport to remote sites for training or demonstration purposes. The framework is based on development and implementation of such a facility at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in the Vancouver area of Canada. It is the goal of the author to allow other institutes to reduce overall implementation time and to share and collaborate on educational materials and pedagogical results. The paper concludes with the presentation of a cost function which ranks, according to the author and BCIT's planning experience, the relative costs and benefits for such a facility in comparison with other possible approaches
