The excavations of the Iranian-Italian Joint Archaeological Mission, directed by Professor Alireza Askari Chaverdi (Shiraz University) and Professor Pierfrancesco Callieri (University of Bologna), following the activities at Tang-e Bolaghi and Pasargadae (Askari Chaverdi and Callieri 2006: 23-25; Askari Chaverdi and Callieri 2016), since 2008 were carried out at the site of Persepolis West, unearthing numerous ceramic materials (Askari Chaverdi and Callieri 2012: 225-248; Amadori et al. 2012: 183-207; Callieri et al. 2014: 1-11). Later excavations have interested the area of Bagh-e Firuzi, located 3.5 km west of the Achaemenid Terrace of Persepolis. In this area, excavations at the site of Tole Ajori have unearthed a structure built with mud-bricks and baked bricks, and an external facade of monochrome glazed bricks (Askari Chaverdi et al. 2013). As ceramic and bricks were generally used, besides their scientific investigations1, a territorial survey regarding local raw clay deposits outcropping in the neighbourhood were carried out. Several raw clay samples (Figs. 1 and 2) were collected and investigated (Amadori et al. 2017), in order to identify the raw materials used for produce ancient ceramic and bricks. The samples have been subjected to X-ray diffraction analyses (XRD), X-ray fluorescence analyses (XRF), SEM-EDX analyses and FTIR-ATR spectrometr

Askari, Gurnah's Afterlives, and History : Some Reflections

The history of African soldiers (askari) who fought in the German colonial army (Schutztruppe) in German East Africa (1890-1918) garnered new attention in 2020 when Abdulrazak Gurnah’s Afterlives was published. Gurnah’s Nobel Prize for Literature win in 2021 brought his body of work to much wider audiences. Where do fiction and history meet in his acclaimed novel? Reflecting on over two decades of historical research on the askari and their roles in the First World War in eastern Africa, I discuss how insights from Gurnah’s recent fiction have shaped my thinking about the askari and the German colonial past. I also situate Afterlives within a growing literary landscape of novels, short stories, and film that feature African colonial soldiers as central subjects.Non UBCUnreviewedFacult

The advancement of multimedia and communication systems has not only provided faster and better communication facilities but also facilitated easier means to organized crime. Concern about national security has increased significantly in the recent years due to the increase in organized crimes, leading to increasing amounts of data available for investigation by criminal analysts. The opportunity to analyze this data to determine patterns of criminal behavior, monitor, and predict criminal activities coexists with the threat of information overload. A large amount of information, which is stored in textual and unstructured form, contains a valuable untapped source of data. Data mining and text mining are two key technologies suited to the discovery of underlying patterns in large data sets. This chapter reviews the use of text mining techniques in crime detection projects and describes in detail the text mining approach used in the proposed ASKARI project. </jats:p

Raw Stomatal Resistance Data (Estimating Evapotranspiration from Commonly Occurring Urban Plant Species Using Porometry and Canopy Stomatal Conductance, Askari et al., 2021)

    No full text
This dataset contains the raw stomatal resistance readings used in the 2021 water journal paper; Estimating Evapotranspiration from Commonly Occurring Urban Plant Species Using Porometry and Canopy Stomatal Conductance (Askari et al.).Stomatal resistance is measured from the leaves of plants using a handheld porometer device. Stomatal resistance provides information about the rate of water vapour transfer out of a leaves stomata (pores). In the referenced paper, stomatal resistance readings are used to infer rates of evapotranspiration from garden plants. The data describes stomatal resistance measured from three different plant types, (Sedum Spectabile, Bergenia Cordifolia and Primula Vulgaris) taken from nine different hourly measurement periods over the course of three days.Leaf area index of each plants leaf type is also included in the data; this is needed to calculate evapotranspiration - the use of it is explained in the referenced paper. </div
