Restoring Effective Sleep Tactics (REST): a sleep optimization program for the military special operations community

    Get PDF
Sleep disturbance is one of the most prevailing symptoms of decreased performance and compromised overall health of the general public. This is also a national security threat because this problem is even more profound in the ranks of the United States military. Sleep disturbance after deployment is common among military personnel and during deployment, has many health and safety implications. There are many personal factors and environmental factors can affect quality and quantity of sleep in pre and post deployment settings. Occupational therapy intervention for special warfare servicemembers that have problems with function as a result of sleep insufficiency is an emerging need. However, there are no current programs offered that have addressed this important occupation. There is a need to develop an evidenced-based occupational therapy interventions that addresses sleep hygiene, as well as behavioral and environmental practices designed to improve both quality and quantity of sleep of this special population. In response to this need, the author designed an effective nonpharmacological occupational therapy intervention program designed to improve quality and quantity of sleep The project focused on 1) identifying evidence-based literature to support the benefit of non-pharmacological interventions for special warfare servicemembers, 2) designing a program that represented best practice while incorporating the holistic and occupation-based theoretical base of occupational therapy, 3) best practice for implementation the program, 4) conducting summative program evaluation, and 5) develop a dissemination plan and implementation budget

Thermal and structural evolution of the East Carpathians in northern Romania : from Cretaceous orogeny to final exhumation during Miocene collision

    Get PDF
Combining thermochronological methods with structural field data, this study aims to reconstruct the Tertiary burial and exhumation history of the northeastern part of the Tisza‐ Dacia block during its invasion in the Carpathian embayment and final soft collision with the European margin. Zircon fission track data additionally provide information about the last metamorphic overprint during the Cretaceous. Within the basement units of the northern Central East Carpathians (Bucovinian nappe stack) and the Preluca massif (Biharia unit) zircon fission tracks are largely reset during the last (Cretaceous) orogeny. Temperatures during this Alpine metamorphic overprint increase from external to internal within the northern East Carpathians from sub‐greenschist facies conditions to at least greenschist facies conditions. Greenschist facies conditions are also observed in the Preluca massif. The close neighbourhood of Coniacian to Campanian zircon FT cooling ages with Cenomanian sediments suggests Late Cretaceous tectonic exhumation in the northern East Carpathians. The most likely explanation for this tectonic exhumation is a ‐ so far undocumented ‐ Late Cretaceous extension related to orogenic collapse (Gosau type basins). The Tertiary evolution is characterised by the invasion of the previously amalgamated Tisza‐Dacia and ALCAPA blocks into the Carpathian embayment and Miocene soft collision of both these blocks with the European margin. The juxtaposition of the ALCAPA and Tisza‐Dacia blocks, with Tisza‐Dacia in a lower plate position, is announced by the onset of Oligocene turbiditic sedimentation. The Burdigalian SE‐directed over‐thrusting of the Pienides (non‐ metamorphic flysch units) is interpreted to express the final stages of this juxtaposition. Burial heating caused full annealing of fission tracks in apatite (i.e. >120°C) in the Central East Carpathian basement in the NE of the study area, while in the basement of the Preluca massif in the SW of the study area temperatures related to Paleogene to Early Miocene burial did not exceed 80°C. The post‐Burdigalian (post‐16 Ma) soft collision of Tisza‐Dacia with the European margin occurred in two stages expressed by predominantly sinistral strike‐slip deformation during constant NE‐SW shortening. During and following soft collision, combined uplift and erosion caused exhumation of the buried rocks along the European margin. Uplift reaches up to 9 km in the Rodna horst The first post‐Burdigalian transpressional stage (16‐12 Ma) is related to perpendicular convergence of Tisza‐Dacia with the NW‐SE striking European margin. Minor exhumation during this stage resulted in Middle Miocene apatite fission track cooling ages (15‐13 Ma) in the west of the study area. The transtensional stage (12–10 Ma) led to the formation of the Bogdan‐Dragos‐Voda fault system. Sinistral transtension allowed for the docking and fitting of Tisza‐Dacia with the NW‐ SE striking European margin. Oblique E‐W convergence led to strain partitioning with thrusting in the external thrust belt and internal strike‐slip deformation. Differential lateral movements are distributed and deformation is accommodated by E‐W striking sinistral strike slip faults and SW‐NE striking normal faults, which led to fragmentation into SW‐tilted blocks. Fragmentation and differential offset along the bounding faults resulted in the formation of triangular‐shaped graben and corresponding horst structures. Enhanced exhumation during transtensional activity led to advective heat transport and resulted in Middle to Late Miocene apatite fission track cooling ages (13‐7) in the east of the study area

Heart work: managing cardiac stress levels post cardiac incidents

    Get PDF
Cardiac clients do not have limitations in their body movements, but they can experience physical fatigue and weakness when they perform daily routines and may experience psychological distress and uncertainty about their heart conditions and bodies. Sometimes the people around cardiac clients can become overly protective due to concerns about unexpected cardiac crises (Albarran et al., 2004; Alsen & Brink, 2013; Altiok et al., 2015; Condon & McCarthy, 2006; Eckhardt et al., 2014; Fredriksson-Larsson et al., 2015; Hellem & Bruusgaard, 2020; Husser & Roberto, 2009; Jeon et al., 2010; Johansson et al., 2003). Such issues are related to cardiac clients’ restricted activity participation, and they need ongoing activity guidance to resume safely their desired activities. A clinical approach that facilitates safe participation in all activities for the cardiac population after discharged was developed in this doctoral project, and this author created an individualized, occupation-based, occupational therapy-led outpatient treatment program. Cardiac clients are encouraged and instructed in ways to manage their stress during activities, and they are empowered to actively participate in their own care. The outcomes of this project will contribute to increasing numbers of occupational therapy referrals for cardiac clients, increased recognition of the distinct role of occupational therapy in cardiac care, and the inclusion of occupational therapy in the continuum of post-discharge care

Yvette, Solange et Chantal : Les Québécoises de Mordecai Richler

    Get PDF
Mordecai Richler is viewed both as the author of polemics that insult French-speaking Quebecers and as one of the most brilliant of Anglo-Montrealer novelists, leading a number of critics to pronounce a divided judgment on him as a writer. In order to go beyond the conventional ideas associated with this dual representation, the author undertakes to analyze Richler’s ambiguous relationship with the Francophone Quebec identity as expressed not in his polemic essays, but in his novels. To carry out this project, the author analyzes the socio-semiotic function of Yvette, Solange and Chantal, three French-speaking female characters from the novels The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1959) and Barney’s Version (1997)

Fit 4 You: an intervention program for occupational therapists working with children with obesity

    Get PDF
Childhood obesity affects roughly 1 in 5 children in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). Childhood obesity is related to health concerns including physical illness, mental illness, and occupational imbalance (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2016; Cantal, 2019; Pizzi, 2016). An in-depth literature review revealed that there are very few childhood obesity programs that support children at the familial or individual level. Rather, current programs are standardized, manualized, and do not allow for customization (Chomitz et al., 2010; Salmon et al., 2008). Program benefits vary based on the participants’ personal and familial factors and supports (Chomitz et al., 2010; Salmon et al., 2008). Therefore, many children do not receive the optimal benefits that these programs suggest. The author developed a 12-week, evidence-based, intervention program designed to guide occupational therapists in treating children with obesity. Behavior change theories guided both the understanding of the problem and the development of the program. Fit 4 You utilizes a flexible intervention approach that allows for customization of the program for each participant, therefore accounting for their personal and familial factors. The Fit 4 You intervention is guided by four evidence-based concepts: (1) planning, (2) self-efficacy, (3) practice and (4) fun. The short and long-term outcomes of this program provide necessary services to an in-need population and contribute to evidence-based practice for occupational therapists. Findings from the program evaluation research will used to improve the program design and will be disseminated to families and occupational therapists to promote program expansion

    A View on landscape photography

ThesisSince its invention scarcely more than a century and a half ago, photography has become not only a phenomenal technical means of communication and visual expression, but unquest:lonably the world's most powerful imagemaking system. Photography is a universal language; it speaks with more force and with greater directness than words. . . The role of the photographer is therefor a very important one. In landscape photography I feel the aim of the photographer is to communicate to the viewer the experience of the landscape that the photographer has had. timeless appeal. A photograph should have a universal and Bearing the above in mind, I have tried to capture this in my approach to landscape photography. With this dissertation I, the Author, will try to show a piece of this 'world'. Taking it right from the early beginnings up to where we stand today providing the reader with the history style and techniques of the old masters, and combining that with what is currently the style. The Author's own work-style, technique, influences and motivations will also be discussed

Robust Real-Time Synchronization between Textual and Graphical Editors

    Get PDF
Modeling languages such as Behavior Trees or QVT Relational provide both textual and graphical concrete syntaxes. Textual and graphical editors for such languages need to synchronize textual representations, graphical representations, and underlying models. During this synchronization, layout in textual and graphical representations needs to be preserved. By bridging the grammarware and modelware technological spaces, we can create support for textual and graphical editors. The former space provides solutions to the parsing of text while the latter space has strong support for graphical syntaxes and editors. In this thesis, we present an approach for the robust synchronization of textual and graphical editors based on such bridging. The approach: provides a mapping from textual syntax definitions to metamodels and a corresponding bidirectional mapping between their instances, recovers from errors during text-to-model synchronization, preserves textual and graphical layout even in the presence of erroneous texts and models, and provides synchronized editor services such as selection sharing and persistent model sharing. The approach was implemented for synchronizing textual editors generated by the Spoofax language workbench and graphical editors generated by the Graphical Modeling Framework.Software Engineering Research GroupDepartment of Software TechnologyElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Primary care occupational therapy: an occupation-based approach for veterans with chronic conditions

    Get PDF
When people are healthy, they are able to accomplish with relative ease what they set out to do, such as going to work, traveling, meeting with friends, and taking care of their personal necessities. However, once chronic illness becomes a factor in a person’s life, he or she is faced with limitations in the ability to perform daily activities, take care of health needs and participate in life activities. More effort is required for everyday activities, leading to abandonment of previously enjoyed routines and further declines in health and quality of life (Erlandsson, 2013a). In response to the complex, dynamic, and often unpredictable care requirements of individuals with one or more chronic conditions, newer primary care delivery models were developed to improve health management and reduce costs (Sevick et al., 2007). The expectation is that these interprofessional team–based models are the best way to address the needs of persons with multiple chronic conditions (Piette et al., 2011). However those charged with providing primary care based on these models have been unable to expand beyond disease-based episodic approaches and healthcare delivery is thus perceived as inadequate in fully serving this growing population (Fortin et al., 2013). The author developed and implemented occupation-based occupational therapy (OT) services and the VA Everyday Matters workshop to demonstrate that OT should be included as a vital component of a primary care effort aimed at meeting the complex needs of Veterans with chronic conditions. Health behavior theory and occupational therapy models informed the role of OT in primary care and the development of the workshop. The use of an occupation-based approach represents an innovative change in how health promotion is conceptualized and delivered in the traditional primary care setting. The immediate and long-term outcomes of this project will have important implications for occupational therapy practice and will contribute to a growing body of knowledge about the health promoting effects of occupation. Findings from the program evaluation will be disseminated throughout the VA and will inform the continued development of innovative ways occupational therapy and primary care can partner to optimize function and quality of life for at-risk Veteran populations
