“Zwischen allen Stühlen”: Reflections on Judaism in Germany in Victor Klemperer’s Post-Holocaust Diaries
No full textThis article focuses as a case study on Victor Klemperer’s diaristic representation of German-Jewish identity and culture after 1945 in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the GDR. The contribution shows how Klemperer’s professional and social situation remained very uncomfortable even in East Germany. For the diarist, the communist code ‘antifascist/fascist’, just like the code ‘German/un-German’ before it, was tantamount to concealing Jewish origin. His post-Holocaust journals provide an immediate insider’s view of Jewish life in Germany after the Holocaust from the perspective of a victim of active persecution. Against this backdrop, the contribution examines how the author’s original German nationalism gradually makes way, caught between contradictory impulses of assimilation and decreed Jewish identity, for a much more complex understanding of his own cultural identity. Klemperer’s diaries highlight a number of tensions that ultimately reflect on the disjunction between living and writing: The divide between a single and changing self lies at the heart of his diaries after 1945, which depict an astute, complex psychogram of the assimilated German-Jewish bourgeoisie that survived the Holocaust and tried to continue living in communist Germany

Auch Victor Klemperers Tagebücher aus dem Zeitraum des Dritten Reiches – Ich will Zeugnis ablegen bis zum letzten (1995) – führen aus der persönlichen Ausnahmesicht eines dem Holocaust entgangenen deutschen Juden überzeugend vor, dass die nationalsozialistische Gesellschaft keine Trennung von Politik und Alltagsleben erlaubte. Der Faschismus setzte sich ja zum Ziel, eine organische Gesellschaft zu schaffen, in der jeder Aspekt des Lebens von der Nazi-Ideologie durchdrungen werden sollte. Von dieser totalitären Durchdringung legt Klemperer beeindruckend Zeugnis ab. Hinsichtlich des dem Tagebuch inhärenten Alltagsfokus soll in meinem Artikel dargestellt werden, dass Victor Klemperers repertorisierendem Schreibverfahren der Wille zur Durchsichtigmachung zugrundeliegt, zur Klärung und Aufklärung dessen, was während der zwölf Jahre Naziterror geschieht, aber ohne die minutiöse Niederschrift unbeschreibbar geblieben wäre

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
