Atypical lipomatous tumor: molecular characterization
Purpose of review Atypical lipomatous tumors/well-differentiated liposarcomas (ALT/WDLs) are one of the more frequent mesenchymal neoplasms and are characterized by specific chromosome aberrations: supernumerary chromosome or giant marker chromosome or both. Extra copies of known oncogenes such as MDM2, CDK4, SAS, HMGA2 and others are present in this abnormal genetic material. Recent findings In the past few years, several papers have further dissected the genetic alterations present in these tumors, allowing the identification of new potential oncogenes. Summary ALT/WDLs represent therefore an interesting model for assessing the potential role of these oncogenes, not only in the pathogenesis, but also as a therapeutic target. ZR 0 ZS 0 Z8 1 ZB
New transcription factors in diagnostic hematopathology
The transcription factors (TFs) that controls the intricate machinery of multistep differentiation and activation programs of the lymphoid system, represent a complex array of proteins, whose identification and function has only in part been completed. TFs are usually expressed during specific differentiation or activation cellular programs, making them interesting tools in diagnostic immunohistochemistry. In fact, the specificity of some of these TFs for lineage or activation/differentiation passages or their abnormal expression in specific disease entity, represents a feature that has been exploited in diagnostic/prognostic immunohistochemistry. Bcl-6 was the prototype of this class of markers. Currently.. the expanding knowledge of the TFs involved in the differentiation programs and in the activation processes of T-lymphocyte and B-lymphocyte in normal and neoplastic conditions and the availability of antibodies able to efficiently recognize these TFs in histologic material, represent a powerful tool in diagnostic hematopathology. In this review we will consider the basic biologic aspects and the applications in hematopathology of some of the lymphocyte-related TFs, including Pax5/BSAB, MUM1/IRF4, BOB1, Oct-2, T-bet, and FOXP3. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Personificazioni di città e Tychai poleos: le emissioni provinciali del Roman Near East nella prima età imperiale. Raccolta preliminare dei dati
Il contributo rientra nell’ambito della ricerca intrapresa dall’unità locale dell’Università di Bologna all’interno del progetto PRIN 2009 “Moneta e identità territoriale: dalla ‘polis’ antica alla ‘civitas’ medievale” e si propone, innanzitutto, di restituire una rassegna delle occorrenze monetali relative a figure femminili differenti, identificate genericamente, e talvolta in modo fuorviante, come Tychai. In particolare, sono state prese in esame le rappresentazioni delle personificazioni cittadine attestate dalla produzione monetale delle zecche della provincia di Syria, nel periodo compreso tra l’annessione romana dei territori e la fine dell’età giulio-claudia. Dal punto di vista interpretativo, l’analisi della documentazione numismatica riferibile a questo contesto ha evidenziato problemi legati al riconoscimento corretto delle immagini monetali, comportando la necessità di individuare procedimenti utili alla predisposizione di una raccolta, il più possibile sistematica e obiettiva, dei dati inerenti la tematica di ricerca. Il contributo dà conto della realizzazione di un database, nel quale sono confluite tutte le caratteristiche denotative e le accezioni peculiari di ciascuna emissione, mettendo in stretta relazione gli elementi figurativi e le formule epigrafiche che definiscono ciascuna tipologia monetale. I dati così raccolti sono stati sintetizzati in una tabella, che consente di visualizzare gli schemi iconici utilizzati nella rappresentazione di figure femminili, individuate genericamente ed indistintamente come Tychai dai repertori numismatici impiegati per la schedatura. La verifica delle occorrenze della corona muralis – assunta come elemento di discrimine per l’individuazione delle figure identificabili come rappresentazioni di entità cittadine – ha restituito un quadro generale della documentazione oggetto di indagine, caratterizzato dall’identificazione di tre schemi iconici di base, corrispondenti ad altrettante aree differenti della provincia di Syria
Analysis of commercial wines by LC-MS/MS reveals the presenceof residual milk and egg white allergens
Fining agents of animal origin are commonly used in winemaking process to clarify and stabilize wines and to optimize their organoleptic properties thanks to the removal of phenolic compounds that cause bitterness and astringency. Considering the potential allergenicity of proteins used as fining agents, theneed of label declaration for wines treated with such compounds is compelling. However, the difficulties in detecting proteins in a wine matrix by immunological assays have given rise to a search for alternative methods that can overcome the limitations of classical approaches. Mass spectrometry (MS) has recentlyemerged as a powerful and sensitive technique to detect residual ning proteins in wines. In this study we show that a simple and straightforward mass spectrometric approach can be used to reliably detect egg and milk allergens in commercial bottled wines. We tested 25 different wines by liquid chromatography coupled with tandem MS (LC-MS/MS) and found proteins of animal origin in 8 samples, so demonstrating that the proposed method allows to monitor the presence of potential allergenic proteins in red commercial wine
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
