'n Analise van die representasie van geslagtelikheid in Roelf van Rensburg se Gooi hom in die sloot (1971) en Barrie Hough se Skilpoppe (1998) : opvoedkundige implikasies.
Thesis (M.A.) - University of Natal, Durban, 2001.In this dissertation it is indicated that gender is a social construct, while sex is
biologically determined. The concept of gender refers to that which is understood within
a certain society to define masculinity and femininity, the power struggle between the
two sexes, as well as the social limitations which are placed on people's behaviour as
a result of gender. Children's and young adult's literature exert a great influence on the
youth's idea of gender roles. The social and cultural history of South African society is
used in this study to explore stereotypical gender roles in Afrikaans youth literature. The
role of a patriarchal society, homosexuality, and changing perceptions of gender roles
are investigated. It is indicated that in both English and Afrikaans children's and young
adult's literature the portrayal of gender roles is often unrealistic, stereotypical, and
contains sexist language. Two novels namely, Gooi horn in die slool (1971) and
Skilpoppe (1998), are analysed using the following categories: male or female author,
representation of gender roles, and use of sexist language. The teaching implications
of the findings for the second language learner are then articulated. OPSOMMING
In hierdie skripsie is aangetoon dat geslaglelikheid ("gender"), anders as geslag wat
biologies bepaal is, 'n sosiale konstruk is.
uitbeelding van geslagtelikheid in sowel Engelse as Afrikaanse jeugliteratuur dikwels

The domestic desires of queer youth:Narratives of domesticity and dissent among queer students at three South African universities
In this chapter, the author draws upon his work as an activist and facilitator working with the non-governmental organisation Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action, to unpack the use of a participatory visual art workshop—dubbed Art for Activism—and explores the life narratives of queer youth. Rather, queer youth experience a South Africa that is firmly rooted within the systems of heteronormativity and patriarchy. This system often leaves queer youth feeling silenced, isolated and harassed. In exploring some of the challenges faced by participants, it becomes clear that the affective and embodied domains of the experience of queer youth form important elements in a creative communal learning space, such as the Art for Activism workshop. The challenges experienced by queer youth were emotional in nature. Feelings such as abandonment, fear, despondency and displacement were expressed in the exercises through tone and physical expression.<br/
Design and Optimization of Steering Assembly for Baja ATV Vehicle
The steering assembly is a part of an automotive suspension system that provides control and stability. It provides control of direction, stability, and control over placement of the car. Optimization of the vehicle in weight results in enhanced performance and low fuel consumption, more so for an all-terrain race car. Optimization in this paper loosely refers to weight reduction and achieving the optimum stiffness to weight ratio of each component. This research encompasses various aspects linked to conceptualizing, designing, analysing, optimizing, and finally manufacturing the steering sub-system. Analytical calculations for mechanical design were performed using data from various experiments and jigs. CAD was developed using SolidWorks, and various analyses were performed using Altair HyperWorks. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was primarily used to build stress plots and locate weak spots aiding optimization. This paper also focuses on using composites and compound designs to optimize the strength-to-weight ratio. Contact Non-Linear analysis has been performed at regions of frictional contacts and interfering contacts. Composites have also been analysed using Altair HyperWorks by defining contacts and material properties to validate the designs before manufacturing. Stepwise setup and results have been enlisted to aid anyone looking to perform a similar analysis. 47% reduction in weight of steering assembly is achieved through this research. These changes result in lighter and yet, stronger designs optimum for a race car

Pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan L.) is the recently sequenced legume by global consortium led by ICRISAT (Hyderabad, India) and been analysed for gene prediction, synteny maps, markers, etc.We present PIgeonPEa Microsatellite DataBase (PIPEMicroDB) with an automated primer designing tool for pigeonpea genome, based on chromosome wise as well as location wise search of primers. Total of 123 387 Short Tandem Repeats (STRs) were extracted from pigeonpea genome, available in public domain using MIcroSAtellite tool (MISA). The database is
an online relational database based on ‘three-tier architecture’ that catalogues information of microsatellites in MySQL and user-friendly interface is developed using PHP. Search for STRs may be customized by limiting their location on chromosome as well as number of markers in that range. This is a novel approach and is not been implemented in any of the existing marker database. This database has been further appended with Primer3 for primer designing of selected markers with left and right flankings of size up to 500 bp. This will enable researchers to select markers of choice at desired interval over the chromosome. Furthermore, one can use individual STRs of a targeted region over chromosome to narrow down location of gene of interest or linked Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs). Although it is an in silico approach, markers’ search based on characteristics and location of STRs is expected to be beneficial for researchers. Not Availabl

Not AvailableAntimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are the defence molecules of the host gaining extensive attention worldwide as these are natural alternative to chemical antibiotics. Machine learning techniques have capabilities to analyse large biological data for detection of hidden pattern in understanding complex underlying biological problems. Presently, development of resistance to chemical antibiotics in cattle is unsolved and growing problem which needs immediate attention. In the present study, attempt was made to apply machine learning algorithms such as Artificial Neuron Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). It was found that performance of SVM based models for in silico prediction/identification of AMPs of cattle is superior than ANN. A total of 99 AMPs related to cattle collected from various databases and published literature were taken for this study. N-terminus residues, C-terminus residues and full sequences were used for model development and identification/prediction. It was found that best SVM models in this case for C-terminus residues, N-terminus residues and full sequence were with kernels Radial Basis Function (RBF), Sigmoid and RBF with accuracy as 95%, 99% and 97%, respectively. These SVM models were implemented on web server and made available to users at http://cabin.iasri.res.in/amp/ for classification/prediction of novel AMPs of cattle. This computational server can accelerate novel AMP discovery from whole genome proteins of a given cattle species for bulk discovery with very high accuracy. This is the first successful attempt for development of species specific approach for prediction/classification of AMPs, which may be used further as a model in other species as well. Not Availabl
