AYI KWEI ARMAH AND FRENCH EXISTENTIALISM: A COMPARISON (GHANA)

No full text
Existentialism is a philosophy which flourishes in extreme situations. Identified with the period of the French Resistance when Frenchmen were held as political prisoners by the Germans, existentialism, with its call for an uncompromised allegiance to a leftist system of values, served to boost the sagging morale of French political prisoners who had witnessed during the Occupation the subversion of their nation\u27s democratic principles by German totalitarianism. The writer finds in postindependence Ghana another example of an extreme situation which, subsequently, has given rise to the existentialist patterns in the novels by the Ghanaian author Ayi Kwei Armah. Largely, Ayi Kwei Armah depicts in his novels the subversion of traditional values by the wide-spread adoption of the corrupt moneyed values imported from the West. The political upheaval on the one hand, which has been nothing short of a national catastrophe, thus has created on the other a moral and spiritual crisis. The identification of a crisis situation in postindependence Ghana, comparable to that created by the German occupation of France during World War II, serves largely as the basis for the examination of the recurrent existentialist patterns in the literature by Ayi Kwei Armah. Using Albert Camus and Jean-Paul Sartre as representatives of French existentialist thought, the writer links, systematically, the novels of Ayi Kwei Armah to the selected works of French existentialists Camus and Sartre on the bases of the following: their collective perception of man\u27s existence in the world as gratuitous, alien and absurd and their subsequent advocacy of choice, freedom and responsibility to counteract the ennui which comes from man\u27s recognition of his superfluousness (Chapters Two-Five). Chapter Six examines Armah\u27s recent novel The Healers in light of the existentialist perspective and concludes that it is Armah\u27s and, by implication, Camus\u27s and Sartre\u27s defense of the human psyche from destructive external influences which imbues their works with their overriding tone of optimism, thus exonerating the authors from wide-spread charges of nihilism

Trough the analysis of male and female characters, this work examines gender discourse in Ayi Kwei Armah's novels. On the one hand, it compares the traditional and contemporary worlds of these novels and on the other hand it examines how the author uses African culture and history in the construction of his male and female characters. Trying to identify the main ideas of his novels, it underlines through an interdisciplinary approach how he perceives otherness in relationship between men and women in Africa. His perception of gender roles reveals the impact of European colonisation on the balance of social and political power between men and women. However, contrary to the narratives of most of African male writers, he depicts a matrilineal society in which women have influence in public matters. It is shown from his use of myths, oral narratives and metaphors of fertillity that Armah tries to enhance women's roles in modern Africa.

History and fiction: Achebe, Ouologuem and Armah

No full text
African novelists, fully aware that man lives in and is shaped by history as well as of the special relevance of this fact for African peoples, have shown a marked historical consciousness in their works. The vivid historical vision which informs a significant part of modern African fiction has been a predominant determining factor in the various works, both from a thematic and a stylistic point of view. While it can be said that the various writers have all undertaken "the visionary reconstruction of the past for the purposes of social direction", the outstanding differences in imagination, interpretation and expression are worthy of note. The novelists Chinua Achebe, Yambo Ouologuem and Ayi Kwei Armah are representative exponents of this historical imagination. It is a truism that, by its very nature, a historical theme poses the fundamental problem of artistic freedom in creative literature. With writers like Achebe and Armah, the historical consciousness is balanced by a corresponding artistic consciousness. Armed with a sensitive vision, the works of these writers include and transcend history. African novelists, fully aware that man lives in and is shaped by history as well as of the special relevance of this fact for African peoples, have shown a marked historical consciousness in their works

Life Cycle Assessment of Bioconversion of Agri-Food Production Residues: Evaluation and Improvement of Energy and Environmental Sustainability

This thesis evaluates the environmental performance of frozen horticultural production systems and explores the potential of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) bioconversion as an innovative approach to agro-industrial residue valorization. Using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method, the study identifies key environmental hotspots across the horticultural supply chains. Primary data were collected from a representative Italian agricultural consortium specializing in frozen vegetable production. The findings reveal that cultivation is a major contributor to environmental impacts, particularly in integrated farming systems, due to agrochemical inputs and related emissions. While organic farming showed relatively lower environmental impacts, limitations like small sample sizes necessitate further research to ensure robust comparisons. Processing phases were also identified as hotspots, driven by energy-intensive operations and relative low transformation efficiency. Valorizing these residues can improve system sustainability. BSFL bioconversion was evaluated as a residue valorization strategy to produce insect biomass. A mass rearing prototype system was designed and tested with the residues and liquid digestate. While results showed promising substrate reduction and larval growth performance, environmental impacts were dominated by electricity for climate control. BSFL protein and fat had higher impacts than conventional protein and fat sources. BSFL also had a higher impact than anaerobic digestion (AD) for residue management. Integrating residual heat from AD emerged as a key strategy to reduce these impacts and make BSFL competitive. The study also identified synergies between BSFL and AD, where BSFL frass serves as a feedstock for biogas production, further promoting circularity. Despite its current challenges, such as high energy consumption and regulatory barriers, BSFL can be a sustainable protein and fat option. The study underscores the importance of holistic approaches, including improving energy efficiency, adopting precision farming techniques, and integrating BSFL systems to enhance the environmental sustainability of frozen horticultural production chains. This work provides a basis for future studies to refine BSFL technologies and develop scalable and sustainable systems

Interaction between anaemia and human immuno-deficiency virus infection in an asymptomatic population in south africa

No full text
Anaemia is common and frequent in HIV infection and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This study was aimed at exploring the interactions between the effects of HIV infection and other related anaemia-causing effects (reductive adaptation, reduced energy/nutrient intake and inflammatory and/or metabolic alterations), which may be responsible for most anaemia in this population. It is postulated that these interactions can heighten the risk levels for anaemia even in an asymptomatic HIV-infected population. The study is based on a secondary analysis of data from the Transition and Health during Urbanisation of South Africans (THUSA) survey, a population-based, cross-sectional study carried out in the North West Province of South Africa. Out of a sample population of 1854 ‘apparently healthy’ adults, aged ?15 years, 216 (11.8%) were HIV sero-positive. A validated quantitative food frequency questionnaire was used to assess dietary intake and standard conditions and protocols used for anthropometric and biochemical measurements.Anaemia was defined using WHO haemoglobin (Hb) and haematocrit (Hct) definitions. Univariate ANOVA statistics showed that HIV-sero-positive subjects had lower Hb, Hct, serum iron, ferritin, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) but higher % saturation compared to their sero-negative peers. However, only the differences in Hct were significant (p<0.001). Anaemia prevalence was generally high but was higher though not statistically significant in sero-positives than sero-negatives (51.4% cf. 45.8%,p=0.123). Anaemia in the study population was mostly mild (about 65%), with a higher proportion of anaemia of chronic inflammation than iron deficiency anaemia. Vitamin a deficiency was significantly associated with anaemia (p=0.022). High serum total proteins, alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and low albumin were significantly associated with HIV sero-positivity. Predictors of anaemia in the study population by logistic regression modelling were settlement type (aOR,1.7;CI,1.2-2.5;p=0.004), serum albumin (0.6;0.4-0.9;p=0.016), TIBC (1.5;1.0-2.2;p=0.008), vitamin E (0.6;0.4-0.9;p=0.006), serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (0.6;0.4-0.9;p=0.007), Direct bilirubin (0.5;0.5-1.0;p=0.0446), and abdominal skinfold (1.8;1.2-2.5;p=0.004). HIV infection was not a significant predictor of anaemia in this asymptomatic population, but the virus and related inflammatory conditions may play a crucial role in the development of anaemia. Where HIV and other inflammatory stressors are prevalent, the overall burden of anaemia could also be increased<br/
