Openness to Experience is associated with neural and performance measures of memory in older adults

    No full text
Age-related decline in episodic memory performance is a well-replicated finding across numerous studies. Recent studies focusing on aging and individual differences found that the Big Five personality trait Openness to Experience (hereafter: Openness) is associated with better episodic memory performance in older adults, but the associated neural mechanisms are largely unclear. Here, we investigated the relationship between Openness and memory network function in a sample of 352 participants (143 older adults, 50-80 years; 209 young adults, 18-35 years). Participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during a visual memory encoding task. Functional memory brain-network integrity was assessed using the similarity of activations during memory encoding (SAME) scores, which reflect the similarity of a participant's memory network activity compared to prototypical fMRI activity patterns of young adults. Openness was assessed using the NEO Five-Factor Inventory. Older vs young adults showed lower memory performance and higher deviation of fMRI activity patterns (i.e. lower SAME scores). Specifically in older adults, high Openness was associated with better memory performance, and mediation analysis showed that this relationship was partially mediated by higher SAME scores. Our results suggest that trait Openness may constitute a protective factor in cognitive aging by better preservation of the brain's memory network

A nine-year-old male European shorthair cat was referred to our practice with severe head trauma after suffering a road traffic accident (RTA). The patient presented marked facial swelling and multiple skin wounds and bruising, inspiratory dyspnea, palpable mandibular and maxillary fractures, serosanguinolent oronasal discharge and right eye exophthalmos and buphthalmos with loss of menace and pupillary reflex. After stabilizing the patient, a CT scan was performed under general anesthesia and an oesophagostomy tube was placed. The scan revealed the presence of multiple right tympanic bulla fractures. Multiple mandibular, maxillary, and palatine fractures were also present. The cat underwent surgery. Mandibular symphyseal separation and maxillary fractures were stabilized using intraoral cerclage wire fixation reinforced with composite and the right eye was enucleated. The rest of the fractures were treated conservatively. A CT scan 4 months after the trauma was also performed. At this point, the maxillofacial fractures were healing properly, and a bone callus demonstrating fusion of fragments of the right tympanic bulla was evident. There was absence of abnormal content inside the right tympanic bulla. The patient recovered uneventfully with no neurological deficits. To the author''s knowledge this is the first case reporting a traumatic tympanic bulla fracture in the cat with case follow up, and the first case reported using CT as diagnostic imaging test

The Bulla issued by Clement IV on 26 March 1267 is the official document in which Saint Hedwig of Silesia was declared a Saint of the Catholic Church. An analysis of the papal document reveals that it is permeated with biblical spirit. This is manifested by numerous biblical references in the form of short citations, paraphrases of the excerpts from the Holy Scripture, biblical metaphors and mentions of biblical characters. The author of the Bulla used all those biblical references to outline the spiritual profile of Saint Hedwig and describe her role as a Saint who intercedes in Heavens for those who live on Earth. In the light of the Bulla, Saint Hedwig appears as a woman whose life was firmly grounded in the biblical foundations

A non-redundant role of complement protein C1q in normal and adverse pregnancy

Availability of data and materials: Not applicable.Copyright © The Author(s) 2022. Complement component 1q (C1q) is the recognition molecule of the classical pathway of the complement system that can bind to an array of closely spaced antigen-bound immunoglobulin G (IgG) and IgM antibodies. In addition to its involvement in defence against a range of pathogens and clearance of apoptotic and necrotic cells, C1q has also been implicated in immune and non-immune homeostasis. C1q is locally produced by immune cells such as monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. C1q is also synthesized by decidual endothelial cells, thus acting as a link between decidual cells and trophoblasts, as well as contributing to the remodelling of spiral arteries. Furthermore, C1q is produced by the extravillous trophoblasts (EVTs) invading the decidua. As a pro-angiogenic molecule, C1q is also important for normal placentation processes as it favors the active angiogenesis in the developing decidua. These observations have been validated by C1q gene knock-out mice which showed pre-eclampsia (PE)-like symptoms, characterized by hypertension, proteinuria, glomerular endotheliosis, and increased soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1)/placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio, and increased oxidative stress. The role of C1q in normal and adverse human pregnancy is being studied extensively due to its absence or low level as a likely precipitating factor for the development of PE.Funding: Not applicable

This essay presents an analysis of reading processes by the light of applied psycholinguistics, and its relation with pedagogical reading practices. For this purpose, I have adopted Cabral’s (1986) reading processes: decoding, comprehension, and interpretation. The objective of this essay is to aid teachers to realize their students' own reading processes in the classroom and to evaluate these processes using didactic activities with questions. Hence, the purposes of this thesis are: i) to analyze the role of reading both in the mother language and in an additional language in the classroom and its aims according to Schlatter (2009); ii) to familiarize the reader in Cabral’s (1986) psycholinguistic processes; iii) to demonstrate classroom dynamics that include the psycholinguistic processes; iv) to underline the importance of (the use of many) interpretation questions; v) to respond to the questioning “why so many questions?” in a way that can include critical thoughts seen beforehand. The theoretical background consists in Coady (1979) and Mei-yun discussion of what is an efficient reader; in Leffa’s (2009) theory of the differences among working reading through the reader’s perspective, throught the text or throught the social paradigm; in the perception between oral and textual communication proposed by Cabral (1986); in the analysis of vocabulary tasks presented by Hedge (2000); in Menegassi’s (1995) theoretical discussion of how the teacher can bring to the classroom questions that include both text comprehension and interpretation; in Nuttall (1995) investigation of the teacher’s purpose in the reading classroom in an additional language and how the teacher can create questions of decoding, comprehension and interpretation. Lastly, my intent in reopening the title main question of this thesis is to aid the teacher to find out its own competence to create tasks to improve their classroom practices

The Recently Discovered Bulla of Bolesław III Wrymouth 1102–1138 and the Problem of Lead Seals in Early Medieval Poland The author considers the four lead bullae discovered during archaeological excavations in the Wielkopolska region Poznań, Gniezno, Głębokie and in Mazovia Susk during the years 2002–2006. The bullae are round and bear signs of being affixed to documents by cords. They are stamped on both sides: the obverses depict a ruler by the name Bolesław or Władysław inscriptions are damaged, while the reverse sides bear the image of St. Adalbert. Objects of the sort were unknown in Poland before these findings. The author points out the similarity of the lettering and of the images with other extant seals and coins. The analysis brings him to the conclusion that the bullae are to be dated in the last 25 years of Bolesław’s III Wrymouth rule period: 1113–1138. Their origins are connected with the weakening of the duke’s power after the murder of his brother, Zbigniew. According to Suchodolski, the duke made efforts to strengthen his authority among others by emphasizing the patronage of St.Adalbert over his person – the patron saint of the country. The author also attempts to determine the relative chronology of the bullae. In his opinion these bullae served as authentication elements added to documents.Leaden bullae were used in numerous European countries, both in the Byzantin and Latin worlds. Suchodolski argues that the discussed bullae are not copies of a single foreign exemplar, but repeat various motifs found on different bullae, stemming chiefly from Italy, France and or southern Germany. The idea of producing such seals could come from the foreign members of the duke’s court, including the persons who came to Poland with his wife, Salomea the Countess of Berg. Similarly, the makers of the bullae should be looked for in the same milieu. Legal Regulation of Remote Work in Slovakia and the Covid-19 Pandemic

    No full text
This paper aims to examine the development of the legal regulation of remote working arrangements in Slovak labour law and to determine the main legal issues that keep this type of work from being more widely utilised in practice. To this end, the article analyses the applicable provisions of the Slovak Labour code, as they developed throughout the years, in particular the changes implemented in connection with the Covid-19n pandemic. It also investigates other applicable sources of law, as well as case law and relevant literature. The main issues identified by the article that need to be addressed by the legislator, involve three areas: (i.) formulation of the place of work in the employment agreement, (ii.) working time and rest periods of remote workers and (iii.) the range of supervisory powers of the employer vis-à-vis remote workers. The author argues that the legislator ought to create more favourable and clear legal conditions for remote work and to enable this type of work to be performed under all contractual types recognised by Slovak labour law, not just in the (standard) employment relationship
