Competitiveness and environmental performance in the olive oil sector: An analysis of the Campania region.
The olive sector is an important part of agriculture in the European Union, particularly in southern countries, where it represents a significant share of the agricultural economy. Taking into account the international and national characteristics and trends of the sector, the aim of this study is to analyse the competitiveness and the environmental sostenibility of olive oil sector in Italy in order to understand the critical factors and possible competitive advantages. The environmental performance in the olive oil sector assumes a strategic importance, not only for environmental sustainability, but also as a distinctive element for the future competitiveness of Italian olive sector. This study focuses on the Campania region, chosen as an example in which this sector represents an important source of income for the local community. Even if this production has decreased considerably in recent years, it presents remarkable production excellence and this typology of cultivation, besides dominating the landscape of internal areas, offers an important contribution to soil conservation and the environmental preservation. The principal result from the analysis of this region is the presence of high professional
specialization in the farmers that favours the extreme attention of firms towards environmental performance. In addition, more than half of the people interviewed said that they reached high level of innovation, even if could be increased allowing a better focus on quality. Lastly, is possible to observe a modest and often ineffective use of public support for environmental actions
The challenge of climate change and the Common Agriculture Policy
Climate change is now an indisputable challenge to the sustainability of human development. The effects of global warming, especially anthropogenic, affect all economic and productive sectors, stimulating a broad debate about the best and more suited tools and strategies to put in place to resist but also to overcome this challenge. European agriculture that is currently discussing on the trajectories post-2013, has a strong interest in the issue of climate change, not only because agricultural activities are directly dependent on climatic conditions, but because also agriculture contributes to the release of greenhouses gases in the atmosphere. Source Parameters of Weak Crustal Earthquakes of the Vrancea Region from Short-period Waveform Inversion.
High-frequency records of nine low magnitude shallow earthquakes of the Vrancea (Romania) seismic region are inverted for the seismic moment tensor (MT). An approach is suggested regarding how to obtain at least a rough estimate of the MT when the information on the structure of the crust is poor. Here simple 1-D layered models are used in the Green’s function synthesis despite the fact that the structure of the region is undoubtedly very complex. Different 1-D models were used for different source-station paths to approximate lateral variations. Record of a station located on a ray path which crosses a structure differing substantially from a 1-D model may however bias the retrieved MT essentially. Therefore, we did not collectively process all records, but subsets of stations separately. We check the consistency of the MTs resulting from these individual ‘‘bootstrap’’ solutions, and reject those which differ substantially, assuming that this is due to the oversimplification of the forward modeling. Thereafter, the averaged moment tensor yielded by the consistent subsets is accepted. Moreover, the distribution of the T, N and P axes from the moment tensors used for averaging provides a rough estimate of their reliability.
Following this simplistic procedure, we found seven acceptably constrained solutions among nine events processed. Their P axes are compared with the general trend of the stress in the area: three comply with it, the others should be attributed to the complex stress field active in the region

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
