Semantic , Syntactic and Usage Propertiers of English Spatial Prepositions
Bakalaura darbs aplūko angļu vietas prievārdu semantiskās, sintaktiskās un lietojuma īpašības kopumā, kā arī īpaši pēta angļu vietas prievārdus in, on un at. Tiek uzskatīts ka šie prievārdi ir savstarpēji aizstājami un ka to nozīme var būt metaforiski paplašināta laika un abstraktajos konceptuālajos līmeņos. Dotā darba mērķis ir pievērsties angļu vietas prievārdu in, on un at savstarpējās aizstājamības jautājumam angļu valodā. Lai īstenotu darba mērķi darba autors pēta kritērijus, kuri nosaka iepriekšminēto prievārdu lietojumu vietas, laika un abstraktajos izteicienos, un, rezultātā, cenšas noskaidrot, vai viena prievārda aizstājums ar citu prievārdu ietekmē vietas, laika un abstraktā izteiciena nozīmi. Atsaucoties uz dažādām aprakstošām gramatikām un to illustrētiem piemēriem, darba autors nonāk pie secinājuma ka process, kura laikā viens prievārds tiek aizstāts ar otru, ir komkleksa parādība, un var ietekmēt vietas, laika vai abstraktā izteiciena nozīmi.The Bachelor paper discusses the semantic, syntactic and usage properties of English spatial prepositions in general and focuses on the spatial prepositions in, on and at, which are claimed to be interchangeable and apt to go beyond metaphorical extensions into temporal and abstract domains. The present paper aims to address the issue of the interchangeability of the spatial prepositions in, on and at in English. To carry out the aim of the paper, the author examines the criteria which determine the uses of the prepositions in spatial, temporal or abstract constructions and, consequently, tries to find out whether the substitution of one of the above prepositions for another affects the meaning of the spatial, temporal or abstract construction within which the preposition is used. Referring to different descriptive grammars and their illustrated examples, the author of the paper comes to the conclusion that the process of the substitution of one of the above prepositions for another is a complex process, and may affect the meaning of the spatial, temporal or abstract construction within which the preposition is used
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Syntactic Shifts in Noun Postmodification in English - Latvian Simultaneous Interpreting
Maģistra darbs izstrādāts kā salīdzinošs pētījums par avota un mērķa valodas attiecībām sinhronajā tulkošanā no angļu valodas latviešu valodā cerībā atrast likumsakarības izmaiņās tulkojuma sintaktiskajās struktūrās. Pārņemot tulkojumzinātnes teorētiskās pamatnostādnes, autore sākumā izpēta dažādās lietvārda modifikācijas konstrukcijas angļu un latviešu valodās, lai pēc tam veiktu empīrisku pētījumu par šo konstrukciju atveides iespējām īpaši izveidotā studentu sinhronās tulkošanas audioierakstu korpusā. Kā parāda pētījums, angļu lietvārda postmodifikācijas konstrukcijas ir semantiski tuvas apzīmētāja palīgteikumam, tādējādi vismaz daļēji izskaidrojot, kāpēc nospiedošs vairākums dažādu angļu valodas vienību tiek tulkotas latviešu valodā, izmantojot tieši apzīmētāja palīgteikumu.

Adopting the basic theoretical framework from Translation Studies, the author first explores the different noun modification structures in English and Latvian, and performs an empirical corpus-based study of the ways of rendering these structures in a special-purpose corpus of student simultaneous interpreting performances. As revealed by the investigation, English postpositive structures are semantically close to relative clauses, thus at least partially explaining why the overwhelming majority of various different English source items with noun postmodification are translated into Latvian using postmodification by the relative clause.

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Bakalaura darbs „ Angļu virsrakstu valodas formālās īpašības” ir pētījums par vienu no visbiežāk sastopamajām virsrakstu valodas īpatnībām – elipsi. Izpētes veikšanai ir izvēlēta ziņu vide.
Tēmu raksturo tās aktualitāte, jo virsrakstu valoda ir sastopama ne tikai ziņās, bet arī uz etiķetēm, lozungos, saukļos, pastkartēs, telegrammās u.c., un īsi sastādīti teikumi ir svarīgi ne vien ar to izvietojumu un lingvistisko struktūru, bet arī ar ietekmi, kādu atstāj uz katru lasītāju.
Autors darbā veic kritisku attiecīgās literatūras pārskatu un izpēti, apkopojot datus, kas balstīti uz teorijās izvirzītajiem kritērijiem un pielietojot tos praktiskajā iztirzājumā.
Secinājumi balstīti nejauši atlasot 100 virsrakstus no BBC tiešsaistes ziņām un piemērojot tiem pieņēmumus par teorētiskajiem skaidrojumiem.The bachelor paper “Formal Features of English Block Language” is the research made on one of the most common peculiarities of block language – ellipsis. The news discourse has been chosen as the basis of investigation.
The theme can be characterized by its topicality as the block language appears not only in headlines, but also in labels, slogans, postcards and cables, and their layout and, especially, linguistic structure are very important as they leave a specific impression to the reader.
The author uses the method of critical review and discussion of literature, collecting the data that is based on the criteria drawn from the theory and evaluating the analyzed data.
Conclusions are drawn by randomly taking 100 headlines of BBC online news and applying them to the assumptions presented in theoretical accounts
Teaching Vocabulary to Beginner Young Learners
Pētījumā ir apskatīta NLP metožu lietošana, mācot svešvalodu bērniem sākumskolas vecumā.
Darbā ir izpētītas dažādas svešvalodas pasniegšanas pieejas un izdarīti secinājumi par to, vai NLP metodes ir labākas par citām, atzīstot un pamatojot, ka pārējās metodes arī ir ieteicams izmantot.
Pētījums satur sekojošo jautājumu analīzi: kas ir vārdi un vārdu krājuma būtība, pedagoģiskās un psiholoģiskās īpatnības strādājot ar 6-7 gadus veciem bērniem, NLP būtību un tās piemērošanu angļu valodas mācīšanā. Darbs ietver detalizētu izklāstu par vārdu mācīšanu un mācīšanas stratēģijām.

The paper investigates different foreign language teaching approaches and draws the conclusions about the supremacy of NLP methods admitting that other methods are also valid.
The study contains an analysis and discussion of the following questions: the notion of vocabulary and words, peculiarities of working with children of the age of 6-7, NLP concepts and their implications to teaching English. It also reviews the currently existing approaches to teaching vocabulary and spotlights some ideas for teaching lexis.
The chapters 1-6 present a review and discussion of the literature concerning the research area, i.e. linguistics, pedagogy, methodology and psychology. Chapter 7 presents a description of the quasi experiment carried out by the author comparing NLP methods and natural/communicative approach in teaching lexis. The Appendices include detailed lesson plans.

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
