    Defining Trace Semantics for CSP-Agda

    This article is based on the library CSP-Agda, which represents the process algebra CSP coinductively in the interactive theorem prover Agda. The intended application area of CSP-Agda is the proof of properties of safety critical systems (especially the railway domain). In CSP-Agda, CSP processes have been extended to monadic form, allowing the design of processes in a more modular way. In this article we extend the trace semantics of CSP to the monadic setting. We implement this semantics, together with the corresponding refinement and equality relation, formally in CSP-Agda. In order to demonstrate the proof capabilities of CSP-Agda, we prove in CSP-Agda selected algebraic laws of CSP based on the trace semantics. Because of the monadic settings, some adjustments need to be made to these laws. The examples covered in this article are the laws of refinement, commutativity of interleaving and parallel, and the monad laws for the monadic extension of CSP. All proofs and definitions have been type checked in Agda. Further proofs of algebraic laws will be available in the repository of CSP-Agda

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     In this article an overview over the work of the author on developing proof theoretic strong extensions of Martin-Loef Type Theory including precise proof theoretic bounds is given. It presents the first publication of the proof theoretically strongest known extensions of Martin-Loef Type Theory, namely the hyper-Mahlo Universe, the hyper-alpha-Mahlo universe, the autononomous Mahlo universe and the Pi_3-reflecting universe. This is part of a proof theoretic program in developing proof theoretic as strong as possible constructive theories in order to obtain a constructive underpinning of strong classical theories with a full proof theoretic analysis

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Universes in Type Theory Part I-

    Abstract We give an overview over universes in Martin-L"of type theory and consider the following universe constructions: a simple universe, E. Palmgren's super universe and the Mahlo universe. We then introduce models for these theories in extensions of Kripke-Platek set theory having the same proof theoretic strength. The extensions of Kripke-Platek set theory used formalise the existence of a recursively inaccessible ordinal, a recursively hyper-inaccessible ordinal, and a recursively Mahlo ordinal. Using these models we determine upper bounds for the proof theoretic strength of the theories in questions. In case of simple universes and the Mahlo universe, these bounds have been shown by the author to be sharp. This article is an overview over the main techniques in developing these models, full details will be presented in a series of future articles. 1 Introduction This article presents some results of a research program with the goal of de-termining as strong as possible predicatively justified extensions of Martin-L"of type theory (MLTT) and to determine their precise proof theoretic strength.We see three main reasons for following this research program

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Interactive Programs and Weakly Final Coalgebras in Dependent Type Theory (Extended Version)

    We reconsider the representation of interactive programs in dependent type theory that the authors proposed in earlier papers. Whereas in previous versions the type of interactive programs was introduced in an ad hoc way, it is here defined as a weakly final coalgebra for a general form of polynomial functor. The are two versions: in the first the interface with the real world is fixed, while in the second the potential interactions can depend on the history of previous interactions. The second version may be appropriate for working with specifications of interactive programs. We focus on command-response interfaces, and consider both client and server programs, that run on opposite sides such an interface. We give formation/introduction/elimination/equality rules for these coalgebras. These are explored in two dimensions: coiterative versus corecursive, and monadic versus non-monadic. We also comment upon the relationship of the corresponding rules with guarded induction. It turns out that the introduction rules are nothing but a slightly restricted form of guarded induction. However, the form in which we write guarded induction is not recursive equations (which would break normalisation – we show that type checking becomes undecidable), but instead involves an elimination operator in a crucial way
