Photographs of two pages in the book "Lazy B" written by Sandra Day O'Connor and her brother H. Alan Day. On the first page is a photograph of Sue Pirtle, Kay Bailey Hutchison, and Lory Masters standing together. Their signatures are below the taped in picture and a note at the top reads "5/24/02 w/ Pitle; At the Grand Opening of "National Cowgirl Hall of Fame"". On the title page of the book is the autograph from the author Sandra Day O'Connor, along with another photograph of Sue Pitle, Sandra Day O'Connor, and Lory Masters

PeaceMaker: using an online educational game on Middle East politics as an ‘Object To Think With’ (OTTW) in a Masters-level Public Policy course

    No full text
Teaching causality in complex adaptive systems to tertiary students poses dual challenges: presenting key concepts like tipping points, emergence, nonlinearity, path dependency, and feedback; and then guiding students to grasp the uncertainties these entail for policy and decision-making. While the pedagogical value of educational games is increasingly recognised, there is little consensus on underlying learning theories or game design principles. In particular, as traditional behaviourist approaches do not address the implications of complex systems, the author (teaching a Masters-level Public Policy course) used the Israeli/Palestinian politics game, PeaceMaker, in a more constructivist approach that understands games as “objects-to-think-with” (OTTWs)

Single-Step Methylation of Chitosan Using Dimethyl Carbonate as a Green Methylating Agent

    No full text
N,N,N-Trimethyl chitosan (TMC) is one chitosan derivative that, because of its improved solubility, has been studied for industrial and pharmaceutic applications. Conventional methods for the synthesis of TMC involve the use of highly toxic and harmful reagents, such as methyl iodide and dimethyl sulfate (DMS). Although the methylation of dimethylated chitosan to TMC by dimethyl carbonate (DMC, a green and benign methylating agent) was reported recently, it involved a formaldehyde-based procedure. In this paper we report the single-step synthesis of TMC from chitosan using DMC in an ionic liquid. The TMC synthesised was characterised by 1H NMR spectroscopy and a functionally meaningful degree of quaternisation of 9% was demonstrated after a 12-h reaction time

Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the Globalization of Musical Taste

    No full text
"Vivaldi's Four Seasons, or at least parts of it, can be recognised by enormous numbers of people on this planet, and its sounds seem to come from almost every elevator shaft, mobile phone, restaurant and television advert in the world. It stands as the very epitome of a globalized artwork, and therefore it would be reasonable to suppose that globalization theories would be a great help in explaining its success. That this may not be the case is one of the main points of this paper - but before we get to that, there are two matters that have to be set in place. The first is to define the characteristics of the Four Seasons as a global commodity (note that I refer to it in the singular, since the four individual pieces come as a package); the second is to describe the main tenets of globalization theories and some of their chief generating ideas. Trying to map the characteristics of the work onto the assertions of the theories will be the main business of this paper, and this process is designed not only to illuminate the work, but also to test the theories."
