International audienceL’histoire culturelle de la guerre s’est affirmée depuis près de quatre décennies, presque autant que la carrière d’Annette Becker. Le parallèle est loin d’être fortuit ; il vaut reconnaissance de la contribution protéiforme de l’historienne à cette approche historiographique.Après s’être consacrée à la Grande Guerre et à sa mémoire, Annette Becker a travaillé sur les liens entre les deux guerres mondiales et sur l’ensemble des violences de guerre du XXe siècle jusqu’au génocide des Tutsi au Rwanda. L’historienne s’est aussi attachée à montrer comment les artistes, les écrivains et les intellectuels ont rendu compte des douleurs et des cicatrices qu’ont laissées les expériences traumatiques et les souffrances du siècle dernier. Elle est une des fondatrices de l’Historial de la Grande Guerre de Péronne et du parcours historique du Mémorial de la Shoah à Paris, deux institutions majeures.Ce livre propose une lecture panoramique de l’histoire des violences guerrières au XXe siècle et jusqu’à nos jours, de ses mémoires et de ses représentations. Deux générations de spécialistes en histoire, histoire de l’art, anthropologie mais aussi des gens de lettres, des artistes, des responsables de centres de recherche et de musées, pour qui la rencontre avec Annette Becker a laissé des traces fécondes, suscité de nouveaux terrains, voire infléchi leurs questionnements, sont réunis ici.L’ouvrage fait aussi le pari d’un dialogue possible entre espaces et lieux d’une géographie conçue au-delà des seules inscriptions nationales.
