Agradable despertar (Mateo Bonnin, Argentina, 1924)
This paper focuses on the discovery of three cans of the film Agradable Despertar (Mateo Bonnin, 1924, Argentina), a five-act production that is considered the first feature-length fiction film made in Mar del Plata, with production, direction and actors from the city. Several years ago, a first roll of this film had been found, in the same place, the Municipal Archive and History Museum Roberto T. Barili. The condition of the nitrate in the four cans is worrying. The article describes some characteristics of this film, its author, and the project to create a city protocol to protect this and other films, both from the silent and sound periods. Gertrude Bonnin on Sexual Morality
This paper examines attitudes to sexual morality held by the Yankton Dakota author and activist Gertrude Bonnin (1876–1938), better known by her penname Zitkála-Šá (Red Bird in Lakota). Bonnin’s concerns encompass several themes: the victimization of Indian women, disintegration of Native courtship rituals, sexual threats posed by peyote use, and the predatory nature of Euro-American men. This critique as a whole — in which a ‘white invasion,’ in her words, leads to a corruption of Native sexuality — sometimes produces inconsistencies, particularly regarding Bonnin’s statements on the alleged sexual perils of peyote. Her investigations into the Oklahoma guardianship scandals of the 1920s, however, strongly buttress recent research by Sarah Deer (2015), whose study, The Beginning and End of Rape: Confronting Sexual Violence in Native America, highlights the tragic aspects of Native-white sexual relations under United States settler-colonialism
Contributions of the French administrative thought to public administrative science: From Jean Bodino to Charles-Jean Bonnin
This paper attempts to study the contributions of French thought for the science of public administration. It is an exploratory, historical study of documentary review. Results reveal: in the first place, Jean Bodin is considered the first theorist in the public administration field; secondly, we have the contributions made by Anne Robert Jacques Turgot, public administrator in service of the French absolutism, Alexis de Tocqueville, who focused his attention in State activity and Montesquieu, who spread in the West the system discovered by Aristotle: separation of powers. In a third moment, the administrative thought of the absolutism is described: cameral sciences and police science as the closest precedent to public administration science. Finally in a fourth moment, we have the contributions of Jean Charles Baptiste Bonnin, who published his Principles of Public Administration in the context of the French Revolution in the late XVII century. We conclude that the contributions of the French administrative thought constitutes the fundamental precedent in the development of the public administration science and we agree with Guerrero (1986a) who points out administration science is born in France in 1808 with Bonnin’s thought, which allows us to state that administration sciences is a scientific field.O objetivo do presente artigo consiste no estudo das contribuições do pensamento francês à ciência da administração pública. Sleep problems over a year in sexually abused preschoolers
Objectives:
The aim of the present study was to explore sleep problems in sexually abused preschoolers over a year.
Methods:
The sample consisted of 224 abused children and 83 nonabused children aged 3 to 6 years old at enrolment into the study (T1), and 85 abused children and 73 nonabused children at the second evaluation, approximately 1 year later (T2). Sleep problems were assessed using parental reports on the Child Behavior Checklist – Preschool Version.
Results:
Multivariate analysis of covariance revealed that sexually abused preschoolers presented higher scores of sleep problems than nonabused children on all items related to sleep problems at T1. Results from a regression analysis revealed that sexual abuse remained associated with higher levels of sleep problems after controlling for sociodemographical variables. At T2, abused preschoolers still presented more sleep problems than nonabused children on all but one of the sleep items. Results from a repeated measure one-way analysis of covariance revealed that abused preschoolers presented higher total sleep scores at both measurement times. Time was not associated with levels of sleep problems and sleep problems did not evolve differently for abused and nonabused children.
Conclusions:
Sexually abused preschoolers are at risk of presenting with sleep problems. These results are worrisome given the negative impacts of sleep problems on child development. Research and clinical implications are discussed
Sleep problems and dissociation in preschool victims of sexual abuse
Objective: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is associated with a host of deleterious impacts, yet little is known on the short-term correlates in children. This study aimed to investigate the association between dissociation and sleep problems in a sample of preschool-aged sexual abuse victims, while controlling for potentially confounding variables, including gender, age, polytrauma, CSA characteristics and parental distress. Method: The sample consisted of 179 children (ages 3–6 years) and their non-offending parent. Parents completed self-report questionnaires assessing their child’s dissociative symptoms and sleep problems as well as their own level of psychological distress. Results: Regression analyses revealed that sleep problems were significantly associated with dissociative symptoms, over and above all other control variables (children’s gender and age, polytrauma and parental distress). Longer duration of sexual abuse also predicted greater dissociative symptoms in preschool children. Conclusion: Findings highlight the association between sleep problems and dissociation in preschool-aged victims of CSA. Further research is needed to understand their impact on children’s development to design appropriate treatment and prevention initiatives aimed at fostering resilience in young vulnerable children
Understanding cement hydration at the microscale: new opportunities from `pencil-beam' synchrotron X-ray diffraction tomography
The present work describes some new improvements concerning the analysis of cement hydration processes using ‘pencil-beam’ synchrotron X-ray diffraction tomography. (i) A new filtering procedure, applied to the diffraction images, has
been developed to separate the powder-like contribution from that of the grains in the diffraction images. (ii) In addition to improving the quality of the diffraction images for the subsequent analysis and tomographic reconstruction, the filtering procedure can also be used to perform a qualitative analysis of the crystallite size distribution, whenever the more standard approaches cannot be applied. (iii) Given the importance of the calcium silicate hydrate phase (C–S–
H) in cements, a procedure to obtain its spatial distribution using the diffraction signal has been successfully applied, even though C–S–H is a highly disordered phase, almost amorphous to X-ray diffraction. (iv) The main result of this study has been to show that, in spite of the long measurement times required, it is possible to use in situ experiments at different aging times of cement pastes to monitor the cement evolution. This allowed the evolution of the microstructure during the acceleration and deceleration periods of the hydration process to be checked with unprecedented detail, since the quantitative spatial distribution of each phase (including C–S–H) dissolved or precipitated in the sample has been obtained. The reported approach opens up a range of opportunities for the investigation of complex multiphase systems and processes, including hydration and microstructural development in cements
Mao’s specific brand of political violence
I thank Anne Cheng for giving me the opportunity to exchange with distinguished Asian scholars on a topic which I often broached with my students, especially during those last years of my teaching on the Cultural Revolution at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, but on which I have never written a specific paper. When Anne asked me if I would like to speak about political violence, I immediately thought that Mao Zedong was a perfect choice to illustrate the topic, since political violence w..
