    Translation and geography

    No full text
This chapter explores the relationship between translation and geography from a globalization perspective. First, it discusses the translational implications of a spherical understanding of Earth, tracing to what extent spatial, geometrical and cartographical notions of 'globe' interconnected and determined translation practices that fuelled and provoked geographic exploration, colonization and knowledge circulation. Second, it addresses Edward W. Said's concept of 'imaginative geographies' and how this concept prepared the field for what the author calls the 'geography of translation,' that is, the question of where translation happens. Touching on the importance of a spatially and geo-critically conscious discussion of translation, the chapter examines some leading concepts in cultural studies that imply a geographical dimension in translation. Third, it explores what the author calls the 'translation of geographies,' that is, the question of how and to what extent spatial and geographical imaginations have been translated across languages, media and epochs

The threshold proportional reinsurance and its influence on the probability and the time of ruin in a non-life insurance portfolio"TEXT:In the current thesis a new reinsurance strategy is analyzed: the threshold proportional reinsurance strategy, where different levels of retention are applied depending on the level of reserves. This new reinsurance strategy allows us to improve the solvency of the non-life insurances portfolio when compared with a model without reinsurance and a model with proportional reinsurance. Thus, the probability of ruin and the time of ruin, two measures of solvency, are presented. Then, the optimal combination of the retention percentages and the threshold level that minimizes ruin probabilities are obtained

Size and linkages of the Spanish construction industry: key sector or deformation of the economy?

    No full text
Until its recent end, the Spanish construction industry enjoyed a decade of unprecedented growth, absorbing labour and capital from other sectors of the economy in huge amounts. Using the input--output methodology, we compare the picture for different countries in order to seek patterns and identify possible distortions associated with the extraordinary growth of the construction sector in Spain. We find that the sector is plainly oversized in Spain in comparison to its closest benchmarks, namely a group of OECD advanced economies. The available input--output data for Spain, covering several years, also provide evidence of a process of 'deformation' of the economy. On this basis, we provide an initial estimate of the impact a hypothetical adjustment in the industry would have on total income and employment in the economy. Copyright The Author 2010. In situ Clinical Simulations in Primary Care applied to emergency training

[EN] A study with a mixed quantitative-qualitative methodology was designed to assess the use of on-site Clinical Simulations in Primary Care applied to training in Myocardial Infarction (MI) Code, Stroke Code, and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. A total of 95 surveys were completed, and 2 focus groups were conducted with 19 healthcare workers from a health center, representing various professional profiles. Participants expressed the opinion that the training improved their self-confidence and long-term knowledge, and had been very useful and interesting, as it allowed them to practice aspects impossible to address through other types of training (e.g. material localization). They highlighted the importance of leadership in emergency care and enhanced teamwork. Professionals preferred this methodology for future training activities.

There is a new acrostic in the work of Manilius, an acrostic that cannot be casual, that reveals programatic intentions or thought about poetry. In its composition it follows the technique of Aratean acrostics and, in Jacques' words, follows artistic intentions: it expresses the notion of water that, together with that of navigation, and both with a referent in poetic activity, allow us to see the author of Astronomica as a follower of the principles and symbols of the hellenistic school, particularly that of Callimachus. This also shows the poet in his importance and subtlety

Some optimization and decision problems in proportional reinsurance [WP]

Reinsurance is one of the tools that an insurer can use to mitigate the underwriting risk and then to control its solvency. In this paper, we focus on the proportional reinsurance arrangements and we examine several optimization and decision problems of the insurer with respect to the reinsurance strategy. To this end, we use as decision tools not only the probability of ruin but also the random variable deficit at ruin if ruin occurs. The discounted penalty function (Gerber & Shiu, 1998) is employed to calculate as particular cases the probability of ruin and the moments and the distribution function of the deficit at ruin if ruin occurs
