Scholarly Insights into Sustainability, Climate Change, & Blue Food: A Perspective Aligned with Adoption of Sustainable Development Goals
No full textThe increasing global demand for food, coupled with the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation, has shifted attention towards blue food systems. While these systems offer a potential solution to food security challenges, their sustainability is threatened by various factors, including overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change. Recognizing these challenges, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO, UN) advocates for ensuring the sustainable contribution of aquatic food systems to global food security and nutrition, aligning with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs). It was hypothesized that adoption of UN-SDGs would increase the interest of researchers in sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture. Therefore, a bibliometric analysis of the relevant literature published between 2000 and 2023 was conducted to test this hypothesis. The analysis revealed a significant rise in publications addressing climate change and sustainability after the adoption of the UN-SDGs. The countries exhibiting high vulnerability to climate change contributed disproportionately fewer publications to the database. The United States emerged as the leading contributor in terms of publication volume, while Canada’s University of British Columbia was identified as the institution with the highest number of contributing authors. The findings underscore pronounced geographical disparities in research output, with a predominance of countries from the Global North. The underlying factors contributing to these disparities are discussed. Furthermore, the study discusses the policy implications of these findings and emphasizes the imperative to prioritize equitable research initiatives. Such efforts are essential to effectively support the realization of the SDGs within the domain of blue food systems and sustainability. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025
Microstructure, wear and corrosion characteristics of Cu matrix reinforced SiC–graphite hybrid composites
No full textThe aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of SiC-graphite reinforcement on the properties of pure copper. Copper matrix composites with SiC-graphite reinforcement (0, 2.5,5, 7.5 and 10 wt.%) were prepared by stir casting process. Microstructure, phase, density, hardness and wear rate of prepared samples have been investigated. X-ray diffraction revealed that there is no intermediate phase formation between the reinforcement and matrix as a result of interfacial bonding between them. Microstructure study shows the uniform distribution of SiC-graphite particles in the Cu-matrix. Mechanical and corrosion properties of these Cu matrix MMCs were found to be dependent on the reinforcement content. Hardness was found to decrease with the addition of graphite due to its soft nature. Composite containing 5 wt.% reinforcement has shown minimum wear rate and maximum corrosion resistance. Transformation of Woman in Bharati Mukherjee’s Jasmine
Get PDFBharati Mukherjee is truly a global author, an expert in cross-cultural issues and a keen craftswoman who is an expert in portraying the phenomenal, systematic and detailed account of coming-of-age. She knows how to keep her readers glued to her writings. She builds a mystery and then demystifies it page after page, with each page unfolding and unraveling new dimensions of the character she writes about. In this era of globalization, in view of easing borders but mounting cultural differences, the conflict within to adapt to the change is the mainstay of some of her highly acclaimed works. She endeavors to dive deep into the distorted psyche of those immigrants who have been surviving in the conflict of traditional Indian values; inherent in their personality and their fascination for western mode of living that they have chosen out of their professional compulsions or for their urge to achieve a greater freedom in liberal and dynamic society of west. “Framed with the didactics of immigrants and emigrant, the thematic difference of which centers much of Bharati Mukherjee’s fiction, her focus remains the predicament of migrant entities and the possibilities for absorption and rejection in the new world” (Jamwal 1). In her own words, Mukherjee finds this conflict of cultures to be an adventure worth living. She has found herself “thrust into adventures. Once I left the very protective, overly nurturing society [of India], my life intersected history” (Steinberg 33). The cultural intermingling in her work is the reflection of her personal life too. She was born in Calcutta (India), and then migrated to America. She married Clarke Blaise, who is settled in Canada. Her life is one of the perfect examples of mixing of two cultures. However, the cultural conflicts and identity crisis continues – as she names her two sons as Bart Anand and Bernard Sudhir – by mixing English and Bengali names. This struggle for identifying oneself is very well reflected in her works and underlines the relevance of cross-cultural differences in one's life. The conflict between a protective patriarchal society's upbringing and that of the values of a free society of the west is the substratum for casting the web of her stories. Just like a spider's web – neatly crafted-- her stories catch the reader's enthusiasm, line after line until the reader reaches to the core of this web. The centre stage of her stories is mainly acceptance of the truth. She finely builds the plot, based on a systematic circumstantial theme, and is able to justify life as it is. She does not make any comment but the transition of the petite Indian village belle theme climaxing to a western world, gives the reader an opportunity to understand the turn of events in a beautiful manner

We are excited to share news of several developments that we have been working on over the last few months:
The IASSIST Qualitative Social Science and Humanities Data Interest Group (QSSHDIG) is planning an IASSIST Quarterly special issue dedicated to the complexities of sharing qualitative data. For this special issue, we invite submissions of abstract proposals focused on the ethical challenges, methodological concerns, and labor involved in making qualitative data and research materials publicly available. The full CfP and details on how to submit an abstract can be viewed on the IASSIST Quarterly website: https://iassistquarterly.com/index.php/iassist/announcement/view/7 . The deadline for proposing articles is January 31st (full articles won’t be needed until later).
We are delighted to welcome Minglu Wang as a new IQ Editorial Board member (as of October 2024). Minglu is the Research Data Management Librarian in the Open Scholarship Department at York University Libraries, York, Ontario, Canada. Among other qualifications, she brings experience as a member of the Editorial Board for ACRL’s College & Research Libraries (C&RL) (2019–2025), and she led the project group for that Board to investigate a data policy for C&RL.
A new feature recently enabled on the OJS platform allows reviewers to link their profile with their ORCID iD. We mentioned last time that this will enable auto-loading of your articles to your ORCID profile, but the other effect is that it provides an opportunity for reviewers to receive credit and be acknowledged for their professional contributions. Note that the credit will merely note that you have served as a reviewer for the IQ—it will not indicate which article(s) you reviewed.
Unfortunately, the IQ editorial team had to retract a paper from publication this fall due to plagiarism. The paper titled “Data protection and right to privacy legislation in Kenya” by Mankone, A. M. (2023), was published in IQ, 47(3-4). The full retraction notice can be found here.
This new issue of IQ 48(4) presents four excellent papers. The first two evaluate methods to enhance findability of data deposited in data repositories. The subsequent two papers focus on organizational structure and improving organizational workflows.
Kokila Jamwal in ”Boosting data findability: The role of AI-enhanced keyword” examines the use of Artificial Intelligece (AI) to supplement keywords that may be missing or inaccurately defined as a method to improve metadata and boost data findability. The author suggests that using this relatively new technology may reduce the time and effort required by data repositories staff for data curation and may enhance data findability and usability.
Co-authors Knut Wenig and Xiaoyao Han are examining the findability of data deposited in data repositories that are using DDI metadata standards. Their paper ”State of DDI Cloud” invetigates the availability and the comprehensive element usage of DDI standards across 29 repositories registered on re3data.org. Based on their findings they provide recommendations for various stakeholders including the repositories, Dataverse developers, re3data.org, and the DDI Alliance.
The article ”The IPUMS Business Process Model: Instituting a workflow mapping strategy to support archival processes” introduces the IPUMS workflow from external submission of data, harmonization process, documentation, extraction systems, and archival preservation of metadata. Author Diana Magnuson explains the value of instituting this mapping approach, and demonstrates the power of a clear business process model for developing archival goals in an organizational setting in which the archive function is vital but secondary to the main product.
In ”Understanding motivations and future needs for data depoists at Korea Social Sciences Data Archive”, authors Hyowon Kim, Do Won Kim and Jungwon Yang evaluate the current data deposit process of the Korea Social Science Data Archive (KOSSDA). The data archive recently transitioned into an idependent researh center under Seoul National Univerity. Using interviews with stakeholders, they identify future needs and suggest a long-term strategy to ensure that the archive meets the needs of the academic community it supports.
