Destructive and non-destructive determination of the transport current density radial distribution: application to Bi-2212 textured rods
Destructive and non-destructive methods to estimate the radial distribution of the transport critical current, Jc(r), of long cylindrical superconductors are presented. The non-destructive method is based on the measurement of self-field AC losses as a function of the current amplitude, Q(I0) and takes into account the E–J characteristics of the material. Both methods have been used to derive the Jc(r) profiles of long and thin Bi-2212 rods textured by laser-induced zone melting techniques. The obtained results have been correlated with the microstructure of the samples and their critical temperature. <br/
Enhancement of the 77 K critical currents on thin textured Bi-2212 rods by controlled distribution of secondary phases
Long and thin Bi-2212 rods textured by laser induced zone melting show inhomogeneous radial distribution of secondary phases and Bi concentration in transverse cross-sections. The microstructure inhomogeneity, which depends on the growth conditions, is reflected in the physical properties of the samples. We have estimated the radial distribution of Jc (77 K) in different samples using destructive and non-destructive approaches, correlating these results with the microstructure variations. Using this knowledge, the conductor performance at 77 K has been optimised by controlling the distribution of secondary phases
Self-field AC losses of textured Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+? thin rods
Self-field AC losses of polycrystalline Bi-2212 thin rods textured by a Laser Floating Zone (LFZ) melting technique have been measured at 77 K. With the optimal processing parameters, these rods, of 1.6–2 mm diameter and 10 cm length, have a transport critical current density of 3 kA/cm2 in the self-field which decreases to about 1.5 kA/cm2 in fields of 0.02 T applied perpendicular to the rod axis. The self-field AC losses have been measured in DC magnetic fields up to 0.03 T. The measurements in zero field show that for a large current range the losses are dominated by hysteresis losses as described by the Critical State Model for a cylinder. For the measurements in DC fields the losses show an increasingly resistive-like dependence with current, while the hysteretic component expected from the CSM becomes less important. Measurements at different frequencies also indicated that the loss per cycle in fields is strongly frequency dependent
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Effects of laser surface processing under different atmospheres on the superconducting properties of pure niobium
Niobium metal is the pure element with the highest superconducting critical temperature (T_c = 9.2 K), which is present in many applications. Particularly, in superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities of particle accelerators, the control of the surface characteristics of pure Nb is crucial, as the presence of defects may generate magnetic flux pinning that can increase by more than two orders of magnitude the surface critical current, ic. Several procedures such as chemical- or electro-polishing have been used aiming at cleaning surface contamination and decreasing its roughness. Sub-nanosecond lasers can be applied to generate a broad range of micro and nanostructures (e.g. Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures, LIPSS) that strongly modify the materials properties - as wettability, color, oxidation resistance or antibacterial behavior. In this work, we analyze a variety of surface structures generated on pure Nb sheets with different laser systems (UV, Vis and n-IR, fs and ps) by exploring a range of processing parameters. These include pulse overlap, irradiance or the effective number of pulses, under different atmospheres (air, N2, Ar, vacuum). The effects on Tc, critical currents and critical fields (Bc1, Bc2 and Bc3) have been obtained from magnetization, ac susceptibility and heat capacity measurements, revealing their dependence with the different surface nanostructures and the chemical changes generated with these laser treatments
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
