The Circular Economy as a Model to Implement the Historic Urban Landscape Approach: Which Integrated Evaluation Method?
Urban Regeneration Strategies for Implementing the Circular City Model: The Key Role of the Community Engagement
In an increasingly urbanized world such as the one we are living in today, the future of humanity is closely linked to cities, as also highlighted by the United Nations. The challenges of sustainable development are concentrated in the cities and thus the way they are planned and managed impacts the quality of life of the citizens who live in them. In this framework, the circular city model can contribute to operationalize the principles of sustainable development. By leveraging urban planning in urban regeneration as a tool for change, cities can transform their processes from linear to circular ones. This study presents the results of the URBES (Urban Regeneration and Best Energy Saving for our Cities) Erasmus+ project, coordinated by Pegaso Telematic University (Italy). In particular, the aim of the paper is to identify project alternatives for the regeneration of four case studies in the circular city model perspective, highlighting the key role of the community engagement. To this end, a questionnaire has been developed for the community to support the decision-making process. In particular, this process has put schools at its heart, with the awareness of the key role of the community engagement and that the circular economy model can be successful if it is supported from the bottom up and, thus, if it is supported by a strong cultural base

A case control study of dermatophagoides immunotherapy in children below 5 years of age
Background: In this study we investigate the effects of parenteral immunotherapy on children below 5 years of age in order to prove the safety and clinical efficacy of dust mite specific immunotherapy (SIT) in such young patients. In young children, allergy is often due to dermatopghagoides and acuses a persistent inflammation that leads to recurrent respiratory infections. This condition impairs the normal development of airways by inducing remodelling. Although many paediatric allergists are used to treating young allergic children with SIT, this method is still subject to discussion. The benefits versus risks of SIT must also be defined. Methods: In a case control study, 28 patients with dermatophagoides induced asthma and rhinitis treated with subcutaneous immunotherapy were assessed alongside a comparable control group. Symptom and drugs scores were collected from diary cards. Results and discussion: Scores proved to be significantly lower in the immunotherapy group in respect to the control group (p=0,001). In particular, asthma attacks in the case group decreased significantly during the first year of treatment (p = 0,001). SIT was well tolerated and compliance was good. Conclusions: Our results confirm the satefy and the efficacy of SIT in children below 5 years of age and above all, they confirm that SIT can begin at a very early age
Deciphering DNA methylation signatures of pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis
Background: Chronic pancreatitis presents a high risk of inflammation-related progression to pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. The high mortality rate is directly related to the difficulty in promptly diagnosing the disease, which often presents as overt and advanced. Hence, early diagnosis for pancreatic cancer becomes crucial, propelling research into the molecular and epigenetic landscape of the disease. Main body: Recent studies have shown that cell-free DNA methylation profiles from inflammatory diseases or cancer can vary, thus opening a new venue for the development of biomarkers for early diagnosis. In particular, cell-free DNA methylation could be employed in the identification of pre-neoplastic signatures in individuals with suspected pancreatic conditions, representing a specific and non-invasive method of early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. In this review, we describe the molecular determinants of pancreatic cancer and how these are related to chronic pancreatitis. We will then present an overview of differential methylated genes in the two conditions, highlighting their diagnostic or prognostic potential. Conclusion: Exploiting the relation between abnormally methylated cell-free DNA and pre-neoplastic lesions or chronic pancreatitis may become a game-changing approach for the development of tools for the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer
