Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Get PDFRaw earth is a very old construction material whose use has grown in recent years because it meets current ecological, economic, and societal criteria. However, the properties of earth highly fluctuate depending on its composition. To determine the behavior of the material, an experimental campaign is currently necessary before any use. The objective of this thesis is to propose a non-linear homogenization model capable of predicting the properties of raw earth according to its composition. This model will thus facilitate the procedure for determining the suitability of a soil for use in construction. In order to calibrate and validate the numerical model, an experimental campaign on a model material is carried out. This material is composed of a pure non-swelling clay (matrix), kaolinite, and a fine sand (inclusions) in variable proportions. The main mechanical, thermal and acoustic properties of these mixtures are tested for variable water contents in order to observe the effects of water on the properties of the material.Raw earth is an unsaturated porous material whose microscopic interactions between water and solid influence its macroscopic properties. For example, capillary pressures increase during the drying of the soil and generate an increase in cohesion but also a significant shrinkage. In addition, the presence of sand grains in the clay matrix limits the free shrinkage of the matrix, which can generate a local stress disturbance at the interface between the matrix and the inclusions and then initiate the cracking of the matrix. In this thesis, a non-linear homogenization model is developed. Firstly, it consists in analytically determining the microscopic state of stress and strain at any point of the heterogeneous material, which makes it possible to apply local cracking criteria related to the microscopic physical phenomena caused by the presence of water. Secondly, the macroscopic constitutive law of the material is deduced from the description of the microscopic behavior of each phase of the material and is implemented in a finite element software. This manuscript concludes with the validation of the model by comparison with the results of the experimental campaign.La terre crue est un matériau de construction très ancien dont l’utilisation s’est développée ces dernières années car il répond aux critères écologiques, économiques et sociétaux actuels. Cependant, les propriétés de la terre fluctuent grandement en fonction de sa composition. Pour déterminer le comportement du matériau, une campagne expérimentale est actuellement nécessaire avant toute utilisation. L’objectif de cette thèse est de proposer un modèle d’homogénéisation non linéaire capable de prédire les propriétés de la terre crue en fonction de sa composition. Ce modèle permettra ainsi de faciliter la procédure visant à déterminer si une terre est adéquate pour la construction. Afin de calibrer et valider le modèle numérique, une campagne expérimentale sur un matériau modèle est menée. Ce matériau est composé d’une argile pure non gonflante (matrice), la kaolinite, et d’un sable fin (inclusions) dans des proportions variables. Les principales propriétés mécaniques, thermiques et acoustiques de ces mélanges sont testées pour des teneurs en eau variables dans le but d’observer les effets de l’eau sur les propriétés du matériau.La terre crue est un matériau poreux non saturé dont les interactions microscopiques entre l’eau et le solide influent sur les propriétés macroscopiques. Par exemple, les pressions capillaires augmentent lors du séchage de la terre et engendrent une augmentation de la cohésion mais également un retrait important. De plus, la présence de grains de sable dans la matrice argileuse limite le retrait libre de la matrice, ce qui peut engendrer une perturbation locale de la contrainte à l’interface entre la matrice et les inclusions et peut alors initier une fissuration de la matrice. Dans cette thèse, un modèle d’homogénéisation non linéaire est développé. Il consiste dans un premier temps à déterminer analytiquement les états de contrainte et de déformation microscopiques en tout point du matériau hétérogène, ce qui permet d’appliquer des critères de fissuration locaux liés aux phénomènes physiques microscopiques causés par la présence d’eau. Dans un second temps, la loi de comportement macroscopique du matériau est déduite de la description du comportement microscopique de chacune des phases du matériau et elle est implantée dans un code aux éléments finis. Ces travaux de thèse se concluent par la validation du modèle par comparaison avec les résultats de la campagne expérimentale
