Multi-Objective Supervisory Control in More-Electric Aircraft Using Model Predictive Control: An ORCHESTRA Application
The crucial issue of supervising and managing electrical energy in the context of aircraft electrification, known as More-Electric Aircraft (MEA), is addressed in this paper. In the pursuit of developing energy-efficient solutions with reduced environmental impact, this research contributes valuable insights into innovative control strategies crucial for advancing aircraft electrification technologies. Through optimization techniques, the management of energy aims to maximize the proposed objectives. With a focus on controlling battery power for charging, discharging, and load shedding, this study employs Model Predictive Control (MPC) alongside an optimizer solving a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. Constraints encompass various aspects, including battery charging, maximum generator power, battery absorption, discharge limits, and converter power limitations. Theoretical results and detailed simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in finding a good compromise among the objectives subjected to the system constraints. Practical validation of the proposed approach is conducted through the European project ORCHESTRA, utilizing comprehensive system simulations in Matlab/Simulink (2022b)
Abject Humanism in Tom Perrotta Adaptations: Election and Little Children
One of the key figures in the development of a suburban ensemble cinema over the past two decades has been author Tom Perrotta, whose novels typically feature multi-focalised structures, blended affect, and suburban scrutiny. Two of his books were translated to cinema, Election (1999) and Little Children (2006), directed by Alexander Payne and Todd Field respectively, and more recently The Leftovers has been adapted as an HBO serial. Election and Little Children are both high-profile examples of the suburban ensemble dramedy, a millennial American filmmaking mode similarly featuring multiple protagonists, usually half sentimental and half satirical, set in different iterations of the American suburbs; other popular titles include American Beauty (Sam Mendes, 1999), Little Miss Sunshine (Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, 2006) and The Kids Are All Right (Lisa Cholodenko, 2010). These films have often been called human dramas and are an example of what I call narrative humanism. In this paper I wish to extend the scope of literary and narrative humanisms, using the Perrotta adaptations to articulate the role abjection might play in suburban ensemble cinema. The paper also demonstrates how a humanist hermeneutic method that accounts for the abject can produce a new, complex ethical inquiry that is focussed on honouring the challenges we face in living up to the prosociality humanism espouses
Robust Monitoring of Time Series with Application to Fraud Detection
© 2018 The Author(s) Time series often contain outliers and level shifts or structural changes. These unexpected events are of the utmost importance in fraud detection, as they may pinpoint suspicious transactions. The presence of such unusual events can easily mislead conventional time series analysis and yield erroneous conclusions. A unified framework is provided for detecting outliers and level shifts in short time series that may have a seasonal pattern. The approach combines ideas from the FastLTS algorithm for robust regression with alternating least squares. The double wedge plot is proposed, a graphical display which indicates outliers and potential level shifts. The methodology was developed to detect potential fraud cases in time series of imports into the European Union, and is illustrated on two such series.sponsorship: The work of Peter Rousseeuw and Mia Hubert was supported by project C16/15/068 of Internal Funds KU Leuven.
The essay analyses the use of speech by the character of Astolfo in Francesco Cieco da Ferrara's Mam-brianowithin the construction of a new court of Charlemagne that the author represents in his work. Astolfo's irreverent and burlesque speech, especially in the collective context of the feast, provokes laughter and induces the regulation of feelings such as envy and attitudes such as backbiting. A specific trait of a traditional character dear to the audience, his being the foolwithin the group, and the use of a comic and rhetorically effective speech become tools to catalyse internal aggressions, rework them and mitigate their effects
In the Morgante of Luigi Pulci the relationships within the court are described by interpreting and re-working the sources from which the author draws the plot of his work. In this paper I show that the political relationships within the court are the main cause for the Rencesvals rout, which is a responsibility of Charlemagne and of his incapability of managing power. The analysis shows also the links between the representation of Charlemagne court in Paris and the historical context in which Pulci lived, in Florence at the end of 15th century: in representing the Rencesvals rout in the last cantare, Pulci hints at the conspiracies, which were a concrete menace to the Signorie in Italy at the time
FROM NICHE TO MAINSTREAM. The emergence of a podcasting culture and market in the Italian radio context
From being an amateur and niche practice, or a "simple" catch-up service for traditional radio stations, podcasting in Italy has rapidly grown in the last five years. This contribution analyses the evolution of the medium from niche to mainstream, in overlapping with the development lines of the radio market. I have been studying three shows in Italian (“Veleno”, “La Piena” and “Morgana”), distributed by podcast platforms operating both in the national and in the international context, and one English-speaking show, developed by an Italian author. The study shows that the international models of audio storytelling resonate and are amplified in the national production. It also shows that, despite the absence of a professional sector dedicated to this medium, there is plenty of room to grow the offer of podcasts, in a country where radio listening and the use of audio media are not losing ground compared to other forms of media consumption
Splenectomy for hereditary spherocytosis: complete, partial or not at all?
Hereditary spherocytosis (HS) is an hematologic disorder, common in the Northern European population, which is characterized by hemolytic anemia and splenomegaly. The pathophysiological bedrock of HS consists of the retention and damage of abnormal red cells, caused by an intrinsic erythrocyte membrane defect. Hemolysis within the spleen is the main detrminant of erythrocyte destruction in patients with HS. Splenectomy removes the primary ?graveyard? for spherocytes and, thus, eliminates anemia and hyperbilirubinemia and lowers the high reticulocyte number to nearly normal levels. Spleen removal is an effective therapeutic option but it is not without risks. The incidence and public health impact of spleen surgery in children with HS is substantial. Unfortunately, splenectomy is sometimes recommended erroneously for young children who have a mild clinical phenotype or is performed without relying on careful assessment of the risks and benefits. This article aims to present criticism and address controversy about HS management. Unclear and still controversial issues are tackled according to the author?s personal viewpoint, because strong evidence in different aspects of HS management is lacking
