    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Relationship between recovery of calf-muscle biomechanical properties and gait pattern following surgery for achilles tendon rupture

    Background. The relationship between ankle plantar flexor biomechanical properties and gait pattern following surgery for acute rupture of the Achilles tendon has not yet been fully investigated. Methods. Forty-nine young adults (27 men and 22 women) who underwent surgical repair of a complete Achilles tendon rupture were evaluated at 3, 6, 12 and 24 months by clinical assessment, biomechanical evaluation and gait analysis. Findings. Ankle range of motion, plantar flexor passive stiffness and concentric strength were recovered within 12 months. Gait abnormalities related to these factors took longer to disappear owing to the presence of anomalous muscle patterns. At 24 months, a deficit in calf-muscle eccentric strength was still present, determining adaptive changes in gait strategy that involved ankle motion and coordinated muscular activity. Interpretation. Improvement of gait pattern is slower than recovery of plantar flexor mechanical properties. Persisting mechanical impairment resulting in gait adaptations may be detrimental to the, healing structures by increasing stress on the Achilles tendon. Restoration of calf-muscle eccentric strength and coordinated antagonist muscle activity should be key points in postoperative rehabilitation following surgical repair of Achilles tendon rupture.     Reliability of transcranial magnetic stimulation-related measurements of tibialis anterior muscle in healthy subjects

    Objective: The main purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-related measurements linked to the corticospinal control of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle in healthy subjects. Methods: Inter-investigator and intra-investigator (within-session with a 1.5-h interval; between-session with a 4-week interval) reliability of the motor threshold, recruitment curve with its slope and MEP area at the plateau, MEP latency, maximum MEP (MEPmax) area, and duration of the maximum and minimum silent period (SPmax and SPmin) were assessed in 50 (29 men and 21 women) healthy subjects (mean age 44.8 years, range 22-74 years) using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM) and smallest real difference (SRD). Results: The high ICC values and lower SEM and SRD values indicate a good intra- and inter-investigator reliability for motor threshold (ICC range 0.94-0.98), MEP latency (ICC range 0.79-0.93), SPmax (ICC range 0.89-0.95) and SPmin (ICC range 0.79-0.81) in healthy subjects. Conclusions: These results suggest that the TMS-related measurements investigated are reliable in healthy subjects. Significance: These data could be useful in further studies on cortical excitability changes, such as those induced by therapeutic interventions (e.g. rehabilitative treatment). © 2008 International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology

    Ultrasound-guided procedure for the treatment of trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis

    Initial treatment of trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis (TMO) often consists of intra-articular injection of corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid. Several studies have shown that ultrasound (US)-guided injections demonstrate greater precision and effectiveness when compared to blind techniques. The aim of our study was to describe a simple and reliable procedure of US-guided intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid solution in patients with TMO. Thirty-one patients with TMO received one administration per week, for 3 weeks, of US-guided intra-articular injection with 1 ml of hyaluronic acid solution. Patients were evaluated before treatment and at 1, 3, and 6 months after the first injection with visual analog scale (VAS) score and Duruoz Hand Index (DHI). One month after the end of treatment, subjective patient response to therapy was evaluated using a 6-point Likert scale. A statistically significant VAS score reduction was observed at 1 and 3 months after the end of treatment (P < 0.01) but not at 6-month follow-up (P = 0.6). No statistically significant difference was found on the DHI total score at 1- (P = 0.08), 3- (P = 0.1) and 6-month (P = 0.9) follow-ups. One month after the end of treatment, 29 (93.5%) patients reported a Likert scale score of "1" or "2." The described US-guided technique of trapeziometacarpal joint injection is easy to perform and revealed excellent accuracy. Nevertheless, intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid provided significant pain relief only for a 6-month follow-up period and did not improve hand function. No pain relief was detected at 6-month follow-up, suggesting that periodic injections should be required to gain long-term effectiveness

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Reliability of TMS-related measures of tibialis anterior muscle in patients with chronic stroke and healthy subjects

    A lack of normative data for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-related measures of the lower limb muscles in patients with stroke prevents us from understanding whether changes in TMS-related measures are induced by treatment or are due to their variability and/or the natural evolution of the disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability of three TMS-related measures: motor threshold (MT), motor evoked potential latency (MEP Lat) and MEP amplitude (MEP Amp), linked to the corticospinal control of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle in sixteen patients with chronic stroke and in sixteen aged-matched healthy subjects. Test-retest reliability was estimated using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) with its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) and standard error of measurement (SEM). In healthy subjects the reliability of all the TMS-related measures yielded an ICC >= 0.75. Similar reproducibility levels were found in patients with chronic stroke, with the exception of MEP Amp on the paretic side (ICC = 0.38). These results suggest that the TMS-related measures investigated are reliable both in healthy subjects and, with the exception of MEP Amp on the paretic side, in patients with chronic stroke.
