Noninterferometric rotational test of the continuous spontaneous localization model: Enhancement of the collapse noise through shape optimization

    No full text
The continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) model is the most studied among collapse models, which describes the breakdown of the superposition principle for macroscopic systems. Here, we derive an upper bound on the parameters of the model by applying it to the rotational noise measured in a recent short-distance gravity experiment [Lee et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 101101 (2020)]. Specifically, considering the noise affecting the rotational motion, we found that despite being a tabletop experiment the bound is only one order of magnitude weaker than that from LIGO for the relevant values of the collapse parameter. Further, we analyze possible ways to optimize the shape of the test mass to enhance the collapse noise by several orders of magnitude and eventually derive stronger bounds that can address the unexplored region of the CSL parameters space

SAFE: Smart helmet for advanced factory environment

    No full text
Safety is a leading theme in industrial applications such as constructions sites and production chains. Several solutions are already in use to protect workers from structural failures or traumatic events. These work instruments have proven their effectiveness, lowering the potentially hurtful, if not fatal, consequences of accidents on workplaces. In this context, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) paradigm can boost the development of smart wearable systems that do not impede movements and/or operations. This work proposes Smart helmet for Advanced Factory Environment (SAFE), an autonomous and integrated wearable IIoT device. With the help of integrated sensors, SAFE is able to perform continuous monitoring activities of the worker and to promptly send alerts in case of alarms and/or accidents

“Ti regalerò fucili”. Ironia e saggezza nelle parodie del primo Eco

    No full text
In his first works Umberto Eco reveals himself to be a multifaceted author, able to move easily from scientific essay to parody, one considered as the reverse or the negative of the other. There’s a relationship of specularity between the pieces of Diario minimo and the essays on mass culture of Apocalittici e integrati, which clearly emerges from a parody like Fenomenologia di Mike Bongiorno, where Eco literally destroys the popular figure of the anchorman with the excuse of describing it analytically. Yet parody in Eco, despite its corrosive force, does not have a moralistic or inquisitorial value, but a sceptical-ironic one: castigat more ridendo. It is an essay of “serious entertainment” that functions as an “extreme litmus test” to verify the validity of the cultural references of its time, both the “high” ones and those linked to mass culture. Diario minimo is crossed by a subtle pedagogical tension which, as Paolo Fabbri claims, “has the aim of transmitting a morality [...] based on an unsuspected common sense, but conveyed by a humorous and ironic form” (Fabbri 2010). Beyond the right to be irreverent which is invoked by the author on the back cover of the book there is not a need for “semiological guerrilla”, but a form of minimal wisdom that disguises itself as a playful spirit

Link budget analysis of bi-directional LEO and GEO optical feeder links advancing the beam wander model’s accuracy

Abstract The telecommunications of the future rely on the concept of a three-dimensional architecture able to integrate terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks with the goal to ensure a reliable and high-speed connectivity to users located anywhere. In this context, free space optical communications constitute a candidate technology for feeder links, thanks to their advantages in terms of bandwidth and achievable data rates. Nonetheless, due to the propagation impediments encountered by an optical beam travelling through atmosphere, flexible and accurate instruments able to support the design of optical feeder links are needed. Therefore, in this paper a link budget numerical tool able to meet these requirements is presented and the link budget analysis for real optical feeder links is performed demonstrating its prediction accuracy by means of the comparison with experimental results for both low Earth orbit and geostationary Earth orbit based configurations. Finally, the limits of the conventional beam wander model are analyzed and overcome
