On the performance of advanced three-dimensional models for cylindrically bent plates subjected to arbitrary boundary conditions

    No full text
Based on recent researches (e.g. [1–3]) aimed at approaching the three-dimensional dynamical values (natural frequencies and mode shapes) of multilayered plates subjected to classical although arbitrary boundary conditions, the interest of the present communication is based on the attempt to test the pres- ent simple analytical approach while preserving the accuracy of the results within the frame of the exist- ing modern calculators. Such an attempt has been previously pursued by the present author through the classical theorem of virtual displacements along with the adoption of the global piecewise smooth func- tions (GPSFs) [4]; as is shown by Messina and Rollo [2] and Messina [3], such a formalization has allowed one to deal with a multilayered architecture as if the plates were made up of a single layer sub- jected to classical arbitrary boundary conditions with, these latter, even dealt with through only three distinct functional bases. The fact that any explicit continuity conditions of the relevant interfacial stress components are not explicitly introduced could be worth mentioning. The above-mentioned analyses left, however, open questions; indeed, Messina [3] noticed certain boundary conditions as mainly respon- sible for a low convergence of eigenvalues to the expected exact three-dimensional counterparts. After investigating the mentioned influence of boundary conditions [3], this writer became aware of static analyses of possible relevant interest. In particular, this writer noticed with extreme interest the paper by Vel and Batra [5] to which the attention of this note is essentially addressed. Vel and Batra [5] analysed the generalized plane strain deformations from a static point of view and by using the Eshelby– Stroh formalism. In spite of the different nature of the problem (static in [5], dynamic in [1,3]) we must accept the fact that a possible slack convergence at exact values in a static analysis is a particular aspect of its dynamic counterpart and vice versa. Therefore, this author discusses the performance of the Eshelby–Stroh formalism, illustrated by Vel and Batra [5], in comparison to the capability of an analytical model to deal with multilayered plates as if they were made up of a single layer architecture [1,3] within the frame of static deformations. Interestingly the comparison will show how sometimes the explicit introduction of the required natural boundary conditions can reduce the accuracy of the results. Moreover, it is shown how the GPSFs bring remarkable benefits when used to model multilayered plates; the benefits can even increase when the GPSFs are used in multiple dimensions rather than only through the thickness of the plate. In passing, and finally, the present comparison shows a slight disagreement with Vel and Batra [5] for few transver- sal stress component distributions; this slight disagreement, however, is definitely of extremely minor importance when compared to the clean and helpful frame offered by the analysis of [5]

Rational and safe dosing of phenprocoumon during loading and maintenance phase

Phenprocoumon is the second most commonly used oral anticoagulant worldwide and the most common agent in many European countries including Switzerland. Given its long half-life of about one week, an initial loading-dose is generally applied. A high loading-dose is helpful to rapidly reach a therapeutic concentration but may be associated with an increased risk of bleeding if the effect overshoots. Phenprocoumon has a narrow therapeutic range, and individual dose requirements are highly variable. In clinical practice the initial dose-finding process for phenprocoumon is largely empiric and often delegated to inexperienced staff members. Thus, both a prolonged loading phase and overshooting of anticoagulation is commonly observed. Question under study The general aim of the thesis was to define one or more algorithms for the loading phase of phenprocoumon-treatment. These algorithms should be easily applicable in a clinical setting and help to improve the drug safety of phenprocoumon especially during the initial dose-finding process. Retrospective study In a retrospective study, predictors of individual dosing needs for a target-INR of 2.0 to 3.0 in medical and orthopaedic inpatients were determined. Several significant predictors of the loading dose could be identified. Using these predictors two simple clinical algorithms for the initial dosing of phenprocoumon in medical and orthopedic inpatients were developed. One algorithm contains clinical data and, additionally, serum albumin; the second algorithm contains clinical data only. Prospective study The aim of the prospective, randomized interventional study was to validate the efficacy and safety of the two previously proposed dosing algorithms for the initiation of oral anticoagulation with phenprocoumon. Additionally, the predictive value of pharmacogenetic markers was to be studied. Both algorithms could be validated and were slightly optimized. They proved to be very safe and effective in hospitalized patients with a high rate of comorbidity. The algorithm using clinical data can be especially recommended due to its simplicity of use

The Guide to Digitized Sal Mosca Audiovisual Recordings details recordings in subseries 3.5 of the Sal Mosca business records, audiovisual recordings, and realia, housed at the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University—Newark. The guide compiles six separate inventories created by Don Messina, who digitized the recordings detailed in the guide. It includes a unique identifier for each recording, date, personnel, instrumentation, recording location, information about the original media carrier, song titles, related commercial releases, and commentary by Messina. Messina, a jazz bassist, performed with Mosca and worked closely with his associates and descendants to gather and research the recordings and create the guide. This guide describes subseries 3.5 of the Sal Mosca business records, audiovisual recordings, and realia (MC 074), Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University Libraries

Risveglio Marittimo: Awakening maritime identity in Messina

    No full text
The master thesis "Risveglio Marittimo - Awakening Maritime Identity in Messina" answers the question of how the concept of maritime identity facilitates the understanding of existing assets and offers opportunities for the design of Messina as a port city. Through the collection of micro-narratives and their organization into categories, Messina's maritime identity was (re)discovered in following topics: heritage and culture, water and environment, threshold and transition, transformation and production, quoditiantity and symbols. The quadrilatero site, between the Ex-Granai and the maritime station, was chosen to design a new maritime space, with the aim of fertilizing the perception and value of Messina's maritime identity. The renovation of the abandoned silos and the fish market allows to offer spaces for culinary products of the sea and the hinterland and their consumption on the edge between land and sea, creating a vibrant public space for exchange and transition at the most important traffic node bridging land and sea transportation.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Urbanis

The article is focused on the European integration process, since the Conference held in Messina in 1955 to nowadays. Firstly, the author analyses the differences between the communitarian and the intergovernative methods. As regards the latter, the author analyses even the evolution of the intergovernative approach to the most recent "method of the Unione". Following, the author takes under consideration if the EU is moving into a federalist approach and thus makes some reflection on the possibility that the EU is evolving into a federalist organization. In this regard he focuses on the mechanism that the EU institution should adopt to affirm its federalist nature
