Examining Health Promotion in Singapore : a content analysis on Health Promotion Board YouTube videos

    No full text
Social media is a communication platform used by many health organizations including health authorities in Singapore to disseminate health contents to the general public. In view of the lack of studies being conducted on the analysis of health contents published online in Singapore, the present study was conducted to examine the coverage of health contents on social media in Singapore. A total of 366 YouTube videos published by Health Promotion Board (HPB) from May 2009 to May 2019 were examined using content analysis to reveal the themes and characteristics of health contents in Singapore. Themes are derived based on HPB guidelines established for promoting a holistic approach to healthy living. Allocation of videos into their respective themes were based on the health messages conveyed in each video. Content characteristics are derived based on the health issue targeted in each video. Trends identified across the data are used to interpret prevalent health issues in Singapore across two timepoints: 2009 to 2014 and 2015 to 2019. Contents under food and beverage had the greatest content coverage mainly comprising of videos related to healthier recipes in the two timepoints. Contents related to preventive health were published most consistently during the period understudied, with greatest content coverage on cancer in the first timepoint and diabetes in the second timepoint. After validating with relevant sources, it is concluded that health contents published by HPB on YouTube reflects certain prevalent health issues in Singapore that are associated with preventive health and food and beverage.Bachelor of Science (Sport Science and Management

The aim of this research was to examine pre-service teachers' teaching efficacy in teaching gymnastics in Singapore primary schools. A questionnaire was given to 21 pre-service PE teachers who have completed the Curriculum Gymnastics course in NIE. A 21-item teaching efficacy scale was used to obtain the teaching efficacy scores. These 21 items are obtained from the MOE PE syllabus for gymnastics. Each item can be rated across a 10-point Likert- type scale. Using SPSS, data collected were analysed through comparing the mean scores and carrying out Independent Samples T-test. The means of teaching efficacy scores were the highest for teaching students how to travel (M = 9.10, SD = 1.00), jump (M = 8.71, SD = 0.90) and climb (M = 8.47, SD = 1.69), and lowest for teaching students how to perform cartwheel (M = 7.10, SD = 2.02), headstand (M = 6.00, SD = 2.00) and handstand (M = 5.34, SD = 2.28). Results from the independent T-test also show significant difference in the total teaching efficacy scores for PTs with prior experiences in gymnastics (M = 180.00, SD = 11.09) as compared to that for PTs without prior experiences in gymnastics (M=145.86, SD=11.71); t(12) = 5.60, p = 0.001. The current study has shown areas which PTs lack confidence in teaching in, even after attending the Curriculum Gymnastics course, and how having prior gymnastics-related experiences could significantly boost teaching efficacy in gymnastics.Bachelor of Science (Sport Science and Management

Adapting the tennis split step to improve agility performance in a softball fielding task

Auburn Softball team has been a strong advocate of the adaptation of the tennis split step into softball. However, there are no scientific papers lending credibility to the adaption of the skill. This study therefore provides a novel study on the adaptation of the split step to improve the agility in a softball fielding task. It is hypothesized that the implementation of the skill will result in significant improvements. 14 participants (8 male, 6 female) with an average age of 23.5 and 3.4 years of experience were tasked to complete a fielding task with and without the softball hop by reacting to directional stimulus from a softball batting video. Participants had to move a lateral distance of 15 ft as quickly as possible. Results showed improvement in total reach time by 149ms (no hop: 2101 ± 200ms, hop: 1953 ± 198ms, p < .01). Step time contributed the most (92ms, p < .01), followed by reach time (51ms, p < .05) and reaction time (6ms). This showed that agility performance was improved by shortening the time taken by the participant to land the first step. There was also a strong correlation of R = -0.74 between the improvement in total time and the landing time after activation of stimulus. This meant that participants who landed the fastest after activation of stimuli made the largest improvement. This study thus showed that the adaptation of the tennis split step into softball can help improve the agility performance of a softball fielding task. The effectiveness of an autocratic coaching style on basketball performance of female tertiary students in Singapore

    No full text
In recent years, surveys such as those of the Singapore Sports Council in 2011 have shown that the basketball scene of Singapore tertiary females does not has as high a participation rate and competitive level as that of the men’s scene. Hence this study aimed to explore the effect of an autocratic coaching style on basketball performance of 6 tertiary females of the intermediate level in Singapore. With an increase in performance, individuals’ intrinsic motivation would also increase through successful experiences (Weinberg & Gould, 2003), thus increasing participation rate and competitiveness of the scene. The hypothesis is that an autocratic coaching style would increase the basketball performance of tertiary female players of the intermediate level in Singapore. Quantitative date was being collected using a repeated measures time series design. 6 basketball training over 3 weeks were conducted with an autocratic coaching style. Each of their Performance Index Rating (PIR) was recorded during the FIBA 3-versus-3 Gameplay of every training. Over 6 trainings, the PIR of 4 participants generally increased, 1 participant’s PIR generally decreased, 1 participant’s PIR fluctuated before stabilizing to almost the same PIR of her 1st session. Thus, the data trend concluded that an autocratic coaching style in most circumstances increases the basketball performance of tertiary females of the intermediate level. Though with 2 of the 6 participants not affected positively, coaching styles adopted should be tailored per the context and learning styles of different players to achieve better performance.Bachelor of Science (Sport Science and Management

Effects of stress in instructional emphasis on rate of motor learning of tertiary students

    No full text
Background: Physical educators and coaches are often charged with motor learning of their students. The effects stress poses to motor learning and motor performance is well documented. However, the sources of stress usually arose from the task difficulty or the environmental conditions itself. Thus, there is limited research available on instructional delivery and emphasis being the source of stress itself. Objective: This study aims to formalize the effects of stress attributed to instructional emphasis on the rate of motor learning of tertiary students. The present study attempts to formalize the effects of stress in instructional emphasis on the rate of motor learning (MLR) of tertiary students. 19 participants performed modified Quadratto Motor Performance (QMT). Performance scores were assessed to determine MLR. A modified stress questionnaire was utilized to assess stress levels. There were statistically significantly higher stress levels of participants during both pre-test and under Harsh Coaching Persona (HCP) when compared to Calm Coaching Persona (CCP). MLR. derived from motor performance, was statistically significantly lower when under a HCP as compared to when under a CCP. QMT scores may not accurately capture motor learning rate through performance outcome measures. Relaxation to reduce stress levels could aid learning.Bachelor of Science (Sport Science and Management

The female athlete triad is a potentially fatal condition with lifelong consequences on the affected individuals. While studies have profusely advocated educating those in close proximity to female adolescents to allow for early prevention and intervention of the triad, limited studies on teachers’ awareness and knowledge of the triad exist. The objective of this study was to determine the perceptions, awareness and knowledge levels of Singapore’s pre- service Physical Education (PE) teachers on the female athlete triad. A total of 64 pre-service second-year PE teachers (100% response rate) from the National Institute of Education in Singapore participated in the cross-sectional survey. To investigate perceptions, awareness and knowledge on the triad, a 31-item questionnaire was administered. Data analysed included participants’ characteristics, perceptions, awareness and knowledge levels and gender differences in awareness and knowledge levels. Low knowledge levels were observed with only 16% of the teachers having heard of the female athlete triad. Only three teachers were able to correctly identify the three components of the triad. A considerable number of pre-service PE teachers had misperceptions about body composition, menstrual irregularities and bone health in female athletes. There was no significant difference in awareness and knowledge based on gender (p = .15). Substantial knowledge gaps and misperceptions about the triad were observed. Modifications with a three-pronged approach to the existing Teacher Training Programme and conducting of educational workshops for teachers in the force are required to address these issues.Bachelor of Science (Sport Science and Management

Applications of global positioning systems in football

    No full text
This brief review explores the research done in global positioning systems (GPS) applications in the sport of football. With Singapore football experiencing a huge decline in performance and world ranking, modern science and technology such as GPS technologies should play a vital role in sport performance, and thus this review aims to provide sport scientists and coaches information in the utilization of GPS devices. A comprehensive search in the online library of Nanyang Technological University and Google Scholar yielded 13 articles involving the utilization of GPS in regards to relevant performance metrics. Total distance, relevant distance, number and distance of high speed runs or sprints, number of accelerations and decelerations, and player load were identified to be discussed. These measurements can play a huge role in assisting coaching staff to enhance player performance and potentially reduce player injuries, but ultimately the interpretation of data by these experts plays a more significant part than the data itself. In other words, wearable technology does not replace the coach or the sport scientist.Bachelor of Science (Sport Science and Management

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
