    Chinese literary works translated into Baba Malay: a bibliographical study

    Analyses 68 unique titles of Baba translated works published between 1889 and 1950. The titles are held in the libraries of the University of Malaya (UM), Science University Malaysia (USM), National University of Malaysia (UKM), the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), National University of Singapore (NUS), National Library of Singapore (NLS) and the British Library (BL). The results reveal three periods of active publication of Baba translated works. A total of 18 works were translated before World War I, followed by 10 just after the war, 39 titles were published before the break of the World War II and 1 was identified in 1950. There were 103 persons involved in the 68 translated works, some of whom are responsible for more than one title. The most prominent translators were Chan Kim Boon, Wan Boon Seng, Seow Chin San and Lee Seng Poh. Some of the translators were also be editors, illustrators or editors. There were 31 publishers and 21 printing presses involved, all were located in Singapore. The most active publishers were Wan Boon Seng, Kim Seck Chy Press and Nanyang Romanised Malay Book Co. The translated works mainly cover historical classical Chinese stories, chivalrous stories, romances, folklore and legends. The titles were priced between 10 cents to 2 dollars in Straits currency. The University of Malaya Library held the largest number of unique title (62) out of which 15 were unique titles

    [[abstract]]One of the major functions of the Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is to maintain the homeostasis of blood pressure in vertebrates. Members of the Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene family are also involved in heart development and morphogenesis. Previous studies have demonstrated that mammalian ACE2 and its Drosophila counterpart, Acer, are expressed in heart and associated tissues. Since cardiogenesis and regulatory genes that involved in heart development of fly and mammals are evolutionary conserved, and Drosophila as an excellent model system to dissect the genetic factor participated in heart development, we would like to unravel the function of Acer in heart development and dissect up-stream factors that regulate the expression of Acer. The dynamic expression pattern of Acer has been revealed by in situ hybridization. It has been shown that Acer is a maternal gene as it has been detected in fertilized egg. Its maternal expression late is disappeared, and it is expressed in dorsal mesoderm, which late contributes to cardial mesoderm, at germ extension stages. The mesodermally expressed Acer is persisted in heart precursors and persisted till the cardial cells fused to form a cardiac tube underneath the dorsal mid line. As Acer is mainly expressed in heart-specific manner, it suggests that it may function in heart development. Pervious studies have demonstrated that cardial as pericardial cells are missing in Acer mutant embryos. To further understanding the upstream factors that regulate the cardial expression of Acer, we have identified the cardial enhancer of Acer is located between -188 and 1211. The expression pattern of the reporter gene is similar to that of Acer. Further studies had demonstrated that Acer is under the direct control of tinman and pannier. Since ACE is also control the homeostasis of blood pressure, which affects the cardiovascular function of mammals, we would like to learn whether Acer is also function in adult fly. Previously studies suggested that heart beat as well as life span are not affect when Acer is overexpressed. Less than 5% of embryos are dead at late embryogenesis with ectopically cardial cells as Acer activity is elevated. Nevertheless, cardiac performance is great affected when Acer is mis-regulated, suggesting Acer is also function at adult stages.

    Nahuatl in the Huasteca Hidalguense : a case study in the sociology of language

    This thesis examines the vitality of Hidalgo Nahuatl (HN) in the communities of Jaltocan, Panacaxtlan, Santa Cruz, Santa Teresa and Zohuala in the Huasteca Hidalguense, Mexico. The research, conducted in Mexico and St. Andrews University from 1976-1982, applies an analysis of HN within the framework of the Sociology of Language and Dependency Theory, thereby using a multi-disciplinary approach. Through an investigation of the historical, social, cultural and economic factors related to HN, the latter is embedded in its reality. HN is shown to be originally a language of dependency and oppression, supported by a long mestizo tradition of "caciquismo". It is demonstrated that an increasing number of Spanish (S) monolinguals, together with other socio-economic factors, is encouraging Nahuas to bilingualize and S:: =A. is fast becoming the new language of dependency. The Hidalgo Nahuas possess practical reasons for the acquisition of S., these being to solve their daily problems - especially land tenancy -, to communicate with the mestizo out-group and to undertake trading with non-HN speakers. However, the Nahuas are not surrendering their native language as they bilingualize, but rather, tend to limit its usage to native Nahua contexts and speakers. HN has become important to the Nahuas in order to demonstrate their ethnic identity and territoriality. The introduction of government projects to the communities, such as the Castellanizacion project or bilingual-bicultural education, are shown to be theoretically bilingual in approach, but fail to take into account sufficiently the regional Indian language in the praxis. The stable maintenance of HN is highlighted by statistical results from the word-count of recorded texts, documents and publications and the range of morphological phenomena affecting S. words in HN is described with examples from the Corpus. The linguistic interference from S. in HN is located within Dependency Theory and this author suggests the use of the term dependency word rather than loan word and dependency language, thus implying a diachronic sociological process which is reflected in HN. Extended Texts are offered as evidence of the linguistic standard of HN and attitudes of Nahuas towards their language are presented. The final conclusion is that modern HN is a viable, vital and functional language at the time of undertaking this research and demonstrates a frequent usage by a large number of speakers. HN has still not entered into:. -avital process of language death, as is the case in other Nahuatl-speaking regions of Mexico, and is still being maintained, particularly at community level, by adults and children alike

    The universal and easy-to-use standard of voltage measurement for quantifying the performance of piezoelectric devices

    The output voltage is a key parameter to quantify the performance of piezoelectric devices, particularly for energy harvesters and sensors. Our recent work (Su et al., 2015) reported that the measured output voltage depends on the inner resistance of voltmeter used. It is contrary to the established concept that the measured results should be independent of the instruments used. Similar measurements, however, widely exist in recent published literature, which is actually not suitable to quantify the performance of piezoelectric devices. This paper proposes a universal and easy-to-use standard for the voltage measurement of piezoelectric devices. The output voltage measurements of a micro-fabricated, flexible lead zirconate titanate (PZT) mechanical energy harvester by two voltmeters with a resistance of 10 M Omega and 55 G Omega, present significantly different output voltage values (similar to 0.2 V vs. similar to 2.0 V), which provide strong evidence for the unusual conclusion. A universal and easy-to-use standard of voltage measurement for piezoelectric devices requires that the inner resistance of voltmeter must be larger than a critical value in terms of effective capacitor, loading frequency and accuracy requirement of measured voltage. This standard is developed to obtain the open-circuit resistance-independent voltage. A self-developed electronic system meeting the standard requirement was built and the universality of all the findings was further validated by a commercial piezoelectric device.     Para muchos estudiantes de pregrado, la vida universitaria es una transición importante en sus vidas, ya que se les concede la oportunidad de decidir qué hacer sin la influencia indebida de sus padres. Los estudiantes toman varias decisiones con respecto a todos los aspectos de sus vidas, como los académicos, la vida social y las actividades de ocio (Baker, 2003). Sin embargo, en medio de la nueva libertad encontrada, los estudiantes tienen que luchar para cumplir con las expectativas de sus padres, que incluyen expectativas relacionadas con su desempeño académico (Smith & Renk, 2007).     Ph.D.Pterygium is a tissue outgrowth from conjunctiva onto cornea, leading to ocular irritation and lower vision. Previous studies reported high p53 expression in pterygium. We hypothesized mouse double minute 2 (MDM2) could inhibit p53 activity in pterygium. And disruption of MDM2-p53 interaction would attenuate pterygium growth. We found p53 was highly expressed in the cytoplasm and slightly expressed in the nuclei and MDM2 was localized in the nuclei in the basal epithelium of all 30 full-length human pterygium samples and 12 primary human pterygium cell lines. MDM2 was localized in nuclei. A p53 transcriptional target, p21, was not expressed in pterygium, suggesting p53 transcriptional activity was inactive in pterygium. After MDM2 antagonist (Nutlin) treatment, increased nuclear localization of p53 were observed in pterygium. In addition, the expression level of p21 was also increased dose-dependently by 2.49 folds in 20μM Nutlin treated cells compared to the vehicle control treated cells. Cell proliferation was reduced after treating Nutlin. Cell migration was inhibited after Nutlin treatment (from 95.43% to 28.15% after treating with 2 to 50μM Nutlin respectively). We discovered a novel mechanism in pterygium that MDM2 suppresses p53 transcriptional activity despite abundant p53 in pterygium. Disruption of MDM2-p53 interaction by Nutlin could be a potential treatment for pterygium.Compared to the standard treatment Mitomycin-C, we found Nutlin induced more pterygium cell death and less conjunctiva cell death. At the dose of killing 50% of pterygium cells, more conjunctiva cells survived after Nutlin treatment. Our results suggest Nutlin could induce cell death specifically in pterygium, with minimal killing effects in conjunctiva.Downregulation of microRNA-145 (miR-145) has been shown to correlate with severe pterygium. We hypothesized overexpressing miR-145 could attenuate pterygium growth. Pterygium cells transfected with miR-145showed lower cell viability and retarded migration. Moreover, higher proportion of sub-G1 population was found in miR-145-transfected cells than the scramble control treated cells. Flow cytometry and immunoblotting analyses verified MDM2 expression was reduced and p53 expression was increased in miR-145-transfected pterygium cells. Our results suggest overexpression of miR-145 in pterygium could be a potential therapeutic strategy through the p53 regulated apoptotic pathway.Previously, we found cigarette smoking has protective roles in pterygium development. Nicotine is an addictive component of cigarettes. Cotinine is an end product of nicotine. Here we aimed to find out the effects of nicotine and cotinine in pterygium cell proliferation and migration. We found that 2mM nicotine-cotinine mixture significantly reduced pterygium cell proliferation. Conversely, 0.5mM nicotine significantly increased cell proliferation. Cell migration showed no significant difference in any dosages.In our study, we are aiming to find out the pathogenesis of pterygium development and how the small molecules could influence pterygium growth. In conclusion, our study suggests a novel mechanism in pterygium pathogenesis: defective apoptosis caused by cytoplasmic localization of p53 and nuclear localization of MDM2 in pterygium. We propose a new strategy for pterygium treatment: p53 reactivation induces apoptosis through manipulating the MDM2-p53 interaction by inhibiting (Nutlin) or down-regulating (miR-145) MDM2. We also suggest environment factors such as nicotine-cotinine could suppress pterygium growth.翼狀胬肉從球結膜向角膜侵襲,導致眼睛刺激及視力減弱。本研究,旨在找出翼狀胬肉的發病機制,尋找替代療法降低復發。既往發現,p53在翼狀胬肉中高表達。我們假設MDM2可抑制翼状胬肉p53的活性。破壞MDM2-p53的相互作用可減弱翼狀胬肉細胞的生長。結果顯示, 30翼狀胬肉中p53主要細胞質中高表達而細胞核中表達信號弱,MDM2在細胞核中高表達。而p53轉錄把控因子p21在翼狀胬肉中未表達,MDM2抑制p53的轉錄活性。经MDM2拮抗劑(Nutlin)處理後,隨劑量的增加細胞中p53核定位增加,p21亦增加2.49倍,而細胞的增殖和遷移均受抑制。研究表明在p53高表達的翼狀胬肉中其活性被MDM2抑制。Nutlin破壞MDM2-p53相互作用,重新激活p53從而起到治療作用。與MMC相比,Nutlin可引起更多的翼狀胬肉細胞死亡。在50%的翼狀胬肉細胞凋亡的劑量下,較多結膜細胞在Nutlin處理後存活。即表明,Nutlin可以更具體地誘導翼狀胬肉細胞死亡而非結膜細胞 。既往研究發現miR-145表達的下調與該疾病嚴重程度有關。我們假設miR-145的過表達可以減弱翼狀胬肉的生長。miR-145轉染的細胞呈較低的細胞活力和遷移,卻較高的亞G1細胞含量。通過流式和免疫印跡分析證實,miR-145轉染的細胞中MDM2表達減少,而 p53增加。證明高表達miR-145可通過誘導p53凋亡來治療翼狀胬肉。既往研究發現吸煙可保護翼狀胬肉生長。尼古丁和可替寧是香煙的重要組成部分。我們想找出二者對翼狀胬肉細胞增殖和遷移的影響。結果顯示2mM二者混合物顯著降低翼狀胬肉細胞增殖。相反,0.5mM尼古丁可使其細胞增殖。任何劑量的治療組對於翼狀胬肉細胞的遷移無顯著差異。綜上所述,本研究提出了翼狀胬肉新的病理機制:p53与 MDM2不同細胞质/核定位使細胞未凋亡。通過抑制(Nutlin)或者下調(miR-145)MDM2影响MDM2-p53的相互作用,從而再激活p53的功能以達到翼狀胬肉細胞凋亡的治療效果,而環境因素如尼古丁可替寧混合物能抑制翼狀胬肉細胞生長。Cao, Di.Thesis Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2017.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 139-159).Abstracts also in Chinese.Title from PDF title page (viewed on 24, August, 2020).Cao, Di

    Study on the Rapid Design and Optimization Technology of Forklift Styling

    The paper introduced a computer-aided industrial design system: Forklift Truck’s Multi Plan Optimizaion System, and demonstrated the modules’ function and techniques with examples. Considering the requirements for efficiency and precision in the forklift styling, the author developed the forklift optimizing software for its styling, which includes parameter optimization, color optimization and part combination three modules. The parameter optimization module can vary the user defined parameters of the forklift models and generate new models. Color optimization module can group the model surfaces and render the groups with different color. New color plans are generated through random changing of the colors in each group. The parts combination module divides forklift into several parts and build lib for each part. The module can pick parts from the lib and assemble them into a whole forklift and demonstrate them. The thesis developed a proto system on the Solidworks platform with VBA programming tools. Interactive genetic algorithms are applied to realize the three module’s function.</jats:p
