World English: Research and Practice
"World-renowned TESOL Expert Essays" gathers the research essence of many senior experts in the field of teacher education development from the internationally renowned English education and academic institution-TESOL International Association (TESOL International Association). Each series of books is dedicated to a research topic in the development of teacher education. From a broad international perspective, it conducts in-depth discussions on hot topics in the fields of teaching, scientific research and professional development of English teachers. It has both rich theoretical knowledge and freshness. The classroom examples of this article aim to provide practical and effective theoretical guidance and practical reference for the education and development of language teachers at home and abroad.
Andy Kirkpatrick is a professor in the Department of Languages and Linguistics at Griffith University in Australia. His main research directions are teaching English as a foreign language, applied linguistics and rhetoric. As an outstanding scholar in the field of world English research, the author has been committed to exploring the key issues in the theory and practice of this field in his successful career for more than 40 years. The research and practice of World English and English as a global lingua franca have emerged in Asia. And communication has had a huge impact. This book brings together a series of impressive representative articles by the author. I believe readers will be inspired by them to explore and study important issues in the world of English. No Full Tex
A postscript and a prolegomenon
While written English continues to hold fairly closely to international “centric” norms, the forms of spoken English which are evolving in Asia – varieties of Canagarajah’s “Lingua Franca English” – show properties which are more fluid, emergent, contingent and creative, and which are strongly influenced by many kinds of contextual factors for each act of communication. The characteristics of the successful language user, and successful language use, in LFE English are closer to Intercultural Communication than they are to mainstream English language pedagogy. These characteristics include language, pragmatic and cultural competence, and can be provisionally grouped under the heading of “communicacy”, a cognitive and interpersonal expertise parallel to literacy and numeracy. Communicacy involves openness to variation and switching; expertise in repair and recovery; negotiation and accommodation; emotional intelligence; and more broadly in intercultural communicatio

Language education policy in Asia
This paper will identify the major trends that can be determined from an overall study of recent language policies across Asia. The trends can be seen across three interrelated themes, namely: the promotion and privileging of one language as the national language as part of an attempt to create a nation state, often in polities that are linguistically extremely diverse; a decrease in the promotion of indigenous languages other than the national language and the neglect of these in education in many countries; and the promotion of English as the first foreign language in education systems, often giving other ‘foreign’ languages a minimal role in education. Possible reasons and motivations for these trends will be discussed and countries where exceptions to these trends can be identified will be illustrated. The aim of the paper will be to discuss these trends and to critically evaluate selected language policies. The paper will conclude with predictions for the future linguistic ecology of the region and for the interrelationships of respective national languages, indigenous languages and Englis
Chinese Rhetoric and Writing: An Introduction for Language Teachers
In Chinese Rhetoric and Writing: An Introduction for Language Teachers, Andy Kirkpatrick and and Zhichang Xu offer a response to the argument that Chinese students' academic writing in English is influenced by "culturally nuanced rhetorical baggage that is uniquely Chinese and hard to eradicate." Noting that this argument draws from "an essentially monolingual and Anglo-centric view of writing," they point out that the rapid growth in the use of English worldwide calls for "a radical reassessment of what English is in today's world." The result is a book that provides teachers of writing, and in particular those involved in the teaching of English academic writing to Chinese students, an introduction to key stages in the development of Chinese rhetoric, a wide-ranging field with a history of several thousand years. Understanding this important rhetorical tradition provides a strong foundation for assessing and responding to the writing of this growing group of students.Arts, Education & Law Group, School of Languages and LinguisticsNo Full Tex
The Asian Corpus of English (ACE)
As a lingua franca, English plays an extremely important role in Asia: there are more speakers of English in Asia than the total number of native English speakers. To study English as a lingua franca (ELF) in Asia, it is important to establish a large-scale representative spoken Asian ELF corpus. Inspired by the Vienna–Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE), the first large-scale corpus of spoken ELF interactions in Europe, a project team in Asia led by Professor Andy Kirkpatrick compiled the Asian Corpus of English (ACE), a million-word corpus of spoken ELF interactions in Asia (https://corpus.eduhk.hk/ace). This chapter will introduce the overall design of the ACE corpus, the data collection methods, and the functionalities of the ACE online system. Some examples of ACE-based research will also be shown. This chapter aims to help those who wish to conduct research using the Asian Corpus of English. No Full Tex
