Finding the Voice of the Early Author: The Impact of a Self-Authoring Program Among First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Preschool Children and Families
This study examined the impacts of implementing a self-authored, dual language identity text program into an existing Aboriginal Head Start preschool program. First Nation, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI) preschool children and families, and educators were co-researchers in the blended Indigenous influenced, participatory action research study which spanned a one-year school timeline and research phase. This study includes an autoethnographic account of a non-FNMI, or a settler author’s personal journey of consciousness and understandings related to surfacing issues of a non-FNMI person doing research with FNMI peoples. The study was underpinned by theoretical frameworks centred on valuing the interconnectedness of the familial and contextual environment of children. Moreover, this research embraces the notion that knowledge is socially constructed to create meaningful change. With this in mind, the study was framed to acknowledge the children’s participatory contributions to the study, guided by Indigenous knowledge and Collaborative Frameworks (2012), Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory (1968), the Academic Expertise, and Societal Power Relations Empowerment (Cummins, 2001), and Cummins’ and Early’s Literacy Engagement framework (Cummins Early, 2011).
Through cyclical reflective practices, the co-researchers in this study found suggestive evidence of the positive impacts of the project for the children, their families, the staff, and the original author with regards to sense-of-self and cultural identity. This study can inform practice in early childhood education, specifically with respect to the provision of culturally relevant educational resources and programming for FNMI children.Ph.D
First person – Timothy Cummins
ABSTRACT
First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Journal of Cell Science, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Timothy Cummins is the first author on ‘PAWS1 controls cytoskeletal dynamics and cell migration through association with the SH3 adaptor CD2AP’, published in Journal of Cell Science. Timothy is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Louisville School of Medicine Clinical Proteomics Center, which focuses on identifying biomarkers of kidney diseases by using quantitative mass spectroscopy.</jats:p
Maria Susanna Cummins and Rosalía de Castro
The present article is a comparative study of The Lamplighter (1854), by the North American author Maria Susanna Cummins, and La hija del mar (1859) by the Galician author Rosalía de Castro, which questions the reception of the so-called sentimental literature. Parallels are established not only between the authors, but also between the protagonists of the novels, and special attention is paid to gender conditions related to social class, professional possibilities for the women of their time and for the way in which the idea of the home is conceptualized in relation to that of the nation

Caribbean museums and national identity / edited by Alissandra Cummins, Kevin Farmer, and Roslyn Russell.
Haitian anthropologist Michel-Rolph Trouillot, in his discussion on how the current global Westernized hegemony treats specific historical events, events chosen for their relevance to the text of Western dominance, has addressed absences (or silences as 'inherent in the creation of sources, the first moment of historical production' (Trouillot, 1995, p. 51). People and places that are designated 'Third World' often find their history has (or has been)
'disappeared'. He references complex historiographical occurrences of this process of historical production, whereby black and poor societies were not just physically ostracized, but in a sense mentally too as they basically
'disappeared' from the historical text. He states: 'History reveals itself only through the production of specific narratives. What matters most are the process and conditions of such narratives .
... Only through that overlap can we
discover the differential exercise of power that makes some narratives possible and silences others.Common GroundTable of content–Acknowledgements ix–Foreword ix –List of Illustrations xiv–

Installation and testing of a Cummins QSK19 lean burn natural gas engine
2013 Spring.Includes bibliographical references. The goal for a more efficient engine will never disappear. Over the years many different techniques have been explored within the common goal of higher efficiency. Lean combustion has proven to be effective at increasing efficiencies as well as reducing emissions. The purpose of this thesis is to install a modern Cummins QSK19G and perform certain test that will explore the lean combustion limits and other methods that could possibly increase efficiency even more. The entire installation and instrumentation process is documented within this thesis. The engine was installed in the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory at Colorado State University. The engine was installed with the hopes of instilling the desire for endless future tests from Cummins as well as other companies seeking this type of research engine. The lean limit was explored in the most detail. Cummins supplied a test plan that satisfied their desired stopping at a lean limit when the coefficient of variance of indicated mean effective pressure reached 5%. For the curiosity of others involved and this thesis, the lean limit was explored further until the engine could no longer ignite the ultra-lean combustion mixture. Friction accounts for a significant loss in a modern internal combustion engine. One role of the engine oil is to reduce these frictional losses as much as possible without causing increased wear. A test was conducted on the QSK19G to explore the effects of varying the engine oil viscosity. Frictional losses of two different viscosity oils were compared to the stock engine oil losses. The fact that reducing oil viscosity reduces frictional losses was proven in the test
Synthesis and evaluation of novel ligands for quantum dot stabilisation and polymerisation studies
This thesis describes the design and synthesis of a variety of functionalised phosphine oxides and sulfides, based on the structure of trioctylphosphine oxide, synthesised for the purpose of surface modification of quantum dots. The ability of the ligands to modify the surface chemistry via displacement of the original hexadecylamine capping layer of quantum dots was evaluated. Finally the surface modified quantum dots were investigated for enhancement in their inherent properties and improved compatibility with the various applications for which they were initially designed. Upon the commencement of research involving quantum dots it became apparent that more information on their behaviour and interaction with the environment was required. The limits of the inherent stability of hexadecylamine capped quantum dots were investigated by exposure to a number of different environments. The effect upon the stability of the quantum dots was monitored by changes in the photoluminescence ability of their cores. Subtle differences between different batches of quantum dots were observed and the necessity to account for these in future applications noted. Lastly the displacement of the original hexadecylamine coating with the "designer" functionalised ligands was evaluated to produce a set of conditions that would result in the best possible surface modification. A general procedure was elucidated however it was discovered that each displacement still required slight adjustment by consideration of the other factors such as the difference in ligand structure and the individuality of the various batches of quantum dots. This thesis also describes a procedure for the addition of a protective layer to the surface of quantum dots by cross-linking the functionalised ligands bound to the surface via an acyclic diene metathesis polymerisation. A detailed description of the problems encountered in the analysis of these materials combined with the use of novel techniques such as diffusion ordered spectroscopy is provided as a means to overcome the limitations encountered. Finally a demonstration of the superior stability, upon exposure to a range of aggressive environments of these protected materials compared with those before cross-linking provided physical proof of the cross-linking process and the advantages of the cross-linking modification. Finally this thesis includes the presentation of initial work into the production of luminescent nanocrystal encoded resin beads for the specific use in solid phase combinatorial chemistry. Demonstration of the successful covalent incorporation of quantum dots into the polymeric matrices of non-functionalised and functionalised resin beads is described. Finally by preliminary work to address and overcome the possible limitations that may be encountered in the production and general employment of these materials in combinatorial techniques is given
