Practice of score rewriting: the case study of Bronius Kutavičius’s opera-poem "Strazdas - žalias paukštis" (Thrush, the green bird)
Straipsnio tikslas – apžvelgti partitūrų perrašinėjimo fenomeną. Neretai kompozitoriai, siekdami perteikti įvairius simbolius, pasitelkia numerologinius kodus metrų, taktų žymėjimui ar, bandydami perteikti gražų grafinį vaizdą partitūroje, aukoja jos praktiškumą ir aiškų perskaitymą. Tokias partitūras dirigentams rekomenduojama perrašyti. Priešingu atveju sudėtingos notacijos įsisavinimas interpretuojant kūrinio metroritminę struktūrą atims daug brangaus repeticijų laiko. Jei nepažeisdami pirminio kompozitoriaus sumanymo galime išgauti tą patį skambesį viską perrašydami muzikams paprasčiau suvokiamu būdu – tai yra rekomenduotina praktika. Kaip konkretus pavyzdys ir tyrimo objektas publikacijoje aptariamas Broniaus Kutavičiaus operos-poemos „Strazdas – žalias paukštis“ partitūros interpretavimo atvejis. Raktažodžiai: partitūrų perrašinėjimas, dirigento analizė, metroritmas, Bronius Kutavičius, „Strazdas – žalias paukštis“Often composers, who themselves are not practising performers, render the music they compose in very complicated notation. To convey symbols, composers use numerological codes to mark metres and bars or sacrifice the practicality of the score and its clear reading in an attempt to convey a beautiful, symbolic graphic image in the score. In such cases, conductors should rewrite the score (along with the parts). Otherwise, the mastery of complicated and complex notation in the interpretation of the metro-rhythmic fabula will take up a lot of precious rehearsal time. Scores of this kind are difficult for musicians to comprehend precisely because of the complete mismatch between the fixed metro-rhythmic fabula and the actually sounding pulsation fabula. For this reason, it is recommended to rewrite the metro-rhythmic fabula by organising the metro-rhythmic events in an easy-to-understand way. Of course, the conductor must respect the dramaturgical codes composed by the author and realise them with precision. Yet if we can achieve the same sound by rewriting everything in a simpler way without violating the original intention, this is the recommended practice. As a specific example, we provide the case study of Bronius Kutavičius’s opera-poem Strazdas – žalias paukštis (Thrush, the Green Bird). Kutavičius used to write down the music he composed in graphic scores. They are very beautiful and deserve attention in their own right as works of visual art. However, graphic notation is quite tricky for performers in terms of practicality. The need to regroup metrotectonic structures in Kutavičius’s opera-poem Thrush, the Green Bird is one of the most important arguments for rewriting the score. From the very first bars of the entry of the first violins, we are confronted with several problematic issues: what value of the sound duration is identical to a conducting beat? how many smaller beat units does a beat contain? what are the support points of phrases? Rewriting the scores allows the metro-rhythmic progression of events, which is particularly difficult to interpret, to be understood by the conductor and the musicians in a much simpler way. First of all, the necessity of rewriting arises when the pulsation fabula, as composed by the composer, does not correspond at all with the metro-rhythmic fabula fixed in the score at the actual moment of performance. The conductor’s interpretation of this type of a metro-rhythmic structure will only disturb the performers with his projection of the movements. Not only is it not enough for him or her to prepare the score for the performance (thus identifying their own movement progression with the pulsation fabula), but it is also necessary to rewrite the performers’ parts. Only then will two radically different pieces of information about the same opus to the performers be avoided: the conductor’s projection of the movements will be identical to the pulsation fabula and not identical to the part of the metro-rhythmic fabula. In the face of the problem of this nature, the practice of rewriting scores and parts is recommended and appreciated. Keywords: score rewriting, conductor’s analysis, metro-rhythm, Bronius Kutavičius, Strazdas – žalias paukštis
Impact of scandinavian foreign direct investment on the economy of baltic states.
The aim of the paper was to investigate the impact of foreign direct investment from the Scandinavian countries on the economies of Baltic states. To achieve this goal, the written work was divided into three main parts: literature analysis, methodology, the research and results. Also, the analysis was performed on positive and negative aspects of FDI and on many conducted researches. In the second part of the work, the author has presented the methodology and stages of the research, with aim to investigate the influence of Scandinavian FDI on the Baltic economies. In the research part of the work, first, the analysis of statistical data was presented. Author has analysed trends in the distribution of Scandinavian FDI and the most investment-intensive economic sectors in the Baltic States. The interrelationships and differences are distinguished and the results are presented. The aim of this study was to analyze the situation and the investment environment of the Baltic states in terms of FDI. Correlation and regression analysis indicated that attraction of FDI from Scandinavian countries has a significant positive impact on the GDP and exports of Baltic states. The research achieved the objectives of the written work and allowed to support the views of many scholars on the benefits and importance that arise for Baltic States from FDI provided by Scandinavian countries and the world. Furthermore, the conclusions presented the main results and aspects of the written work
Pirmą sykį Lietuvos XIX amžiaus lietuviški ir lenkiški tekstai analizuojami kaip integrali visuma, o ne kaip atskirybės, kartu ryškinant žanrinius, idėjinius ir mentalinius skirtumus Reikšminiai žodžiai: Antika; Tradicijos; Paveldas; MetamorfozėBrigita Speičytė’s study, prepared on the basis of a doctoral thesis, demonstrates a new attitude towards 19th century Lithuanian literature and culture. By analyzing in parallel Lithuanian and Polish works, the author looks for general elements of evolution of 19th century Lithuanian culture and normative dispositions. She attempts to trace back modifications of the old culture of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) and the Commonwealth of both Republics, new forms of receiving that cultural heritage. Such provision allows the author of the book to distance herself from the canonical model of researching 19th century literature, which claims that the essential part of unique national culture is constituted by works written in Lithuanian language. Speičytė has transcended certain stereotypes of distinguishing and classifying olf Lithuania and formulated key questions. Where did literary heritage of 16th – 18th century GDL disappeared in the 19th century? How was it imitated, reflected, modified in 19th century Lithuanian literature? How do prominent creators of Polish literature - Adomas Mickevičius, Juozapas Kraševskis, Julijus Slovackis – integrate into 19th century Lithuanian literature? How do the most prominent representatives of that century Lithuanian literature – Dionizas Poška, Simonas Stanevičius, Antanas Strazdas – accepted, adapted, and modified the heritage of GDL and Antiquity? How many genre traditions, reflections of contemporary problems, innovative solutions one finds in their works? For the first time, Lithuanian 19th century texts, written in Lithuanian and Polish, are being analyzed as an integral whole, rather than as separate branches
Be faksimilės, čia įdėtas platus J. Lebedžio įvadas, kuriame S.M. The main attention is focused on scientific publications of songs or songbooks and the works frequently accompanying them and dedicated to issues of textology. The genesis and generalising research of songs are highlighted by indicating the main authors and problems of the research. The re-written, re-printed versions and the research of M. Mažvydas' songbooks, the publications of Slavočinski's songbook are analysed, with particular focus placed on the publications produced by J. Lebedys. The author notes that it is one of the best publications of songbooks from the point of view of textology. Apart from the facsimile copy, it contains a wide introduction by J. Lebedys, which discusses Slavočinski's songbook from the point of view of bibliography, history, linguistics and literature studies. Possible sources of the songbook are mentioned, its translation peculiarities are analysed, and comparisons with other Lithuanian song books are made. The publication of M. Petkevičius' minor songbook of Catechism, J. Bretkūnas' publication of Bible psalms, Mikalojus Daukša's Catechism songs of 1605, songs published in A. Strazda's secular poetry booklet “Giesmės svietiškos ir šventos”, publications of A. Baranauskas' songs and research dedicated to these publications are discussed. The author concludes that Lithuanian church poetry has not been sufficiently analysed and scientifically published. Earlier songbooks or songs have attracted more scientists' attention. The author believes that professional and modern reprints of the old songbooks would serve to the needs of deeper textological and linguistic studies
Vilnius ir Polockas. Du lenkų kultūros centrai ant XIX amžiaus slenksčio
At the beginning of 19th century Vilnius and Polock were the only towns on the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania in which Polish publications, newspapers, theatres and high schools existed. Enlightenment ideas and liberal trends played an important part in the Vilnius community. On the contrary, ideological climate in Polock was created by Jesuits – the order dissolved by the Pope, but existing in the Russian territory. The Author indicates the differences between these two communities and also draws attention to Lithuanian poems written in Vilnius by Antanas Strazdas and Byelorussian poems written there in the Philomaths community by Jan Czeczot. He also considers how big was the influence of Polock environment on the literary activities and attitude of Jan Barszczewski, a student of Polock college and future leading representative of Polish-Byelorussian literary borderland.XIX amžiaus pradžioje Vilnius ir Polockas buvo vieninteliai miestai senosios LDK teritorijoje, kuriuose gyvavo lenkų laikraščiai, leidyklos, teatras ir aukštosios mokyklos. Vilniaus kultūrinis centras buvo besišviečiantis bei liberalus. Tuo tarpu Polocko idėjinį klimatą kūrė jėzuitai, nors tuo metu popiežius panaikino ordiną, tačiau Rusijos teritorijoje jis veikė. Autorius, paryškindamas kylančius dviejų centrų skirtumus, taip pat atkreipia dėmesį į tuo laikotarpiu Vilniuje išleistus Antano Strazdo lietuviškus eilėraščius ir Vilniaus filomatų bendruomenei priklaususio Jono Čečiotos (Jan Czeczot) parašytas baltarusiškas eiles. Autorius apmąsto ir tai, kokią įtaką Polocko centras turėjo Jono Barščevskio, vėliau tapusio pagrindiniu lenkų ir baltarusių literatūrinio paribio atstovu, kūrybinei veiklai
Julijono Lindės-Dobilo inspiracijos
Julijonas Lindė-Dobilas paprastai traktuojamas kaip „vieno kūrinio“ („Blūdas“) autorius. Tačiau rašytojas-mąstytojas įvairiais būdais turtino ir skatino pirmųjų XX a. dešimtmečių lietuvių meninio žodžio plėtrą, stimuliavo tarpukario estetinę mintį. J. Lindės-Dobilo akiratyje didieji Europos meno, estetikos reiškiniai be ypatingų kolizijų derinasi su akcentuotais tautiškumo variantais; įvairias lietuvybės apraiškas jis projektuoja į universaliuosius meno kontekstus. Rašytojas mokėjo įžvalgiai atskleisti fenomenalius A. Strazdo, A. Baranausko, A. Vienažindžio, V. Krėvės, V. Kudirkos, Vydūno, Vaižganto ir kt. kūrybos ypatumus, be nevisavertiškumo komplekso regėdamas juos vienoje gretoje su įžymiaisiais visų laikų kūrėjais. Vaisingiausias atrodo J. Lindės-Dobilo siekimas parodyti A. Mickevičiaus kultūrinį artimumą kūrėjams. Poeto kūrybos fenomeną J. Lindė-Dobilas suvokia kaip gilių asmenybės išgyvenimų, lietuviškos pasaulėjautos išraiškos ir europietiškos meninės kultūros sintezę. Ypač dažnai J. Lindė-Dobilas gręžiasi į romantikų pamėgtą meilės topiką, kurią interpretuoja originaliais rakursais, leidžiančiais iškelti naujus A. Mickevičiaus kūrinių ypatumus. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Adomas Mickevičius (Adam Mickiewicz); Rašytojai; Idealizmas; Julijonas Lindė-Dobilas; Literatūros teorija; Literatūros teorija ir kritika; Vakarų kultūra; Adam Mickiewicz; Bludas; Fallacy; Julijonas Lindė-Dobilas; Literary theory and criticism; Theory of Literature; Western CultureJulijonas Lindė-Dobilas is typically treated as the author of a “single work” (“Blūdas”). However, the writer-philosopher enriched and promoted in various ways the development of the Lithuanian word of art of the first decades of the 20th c. and stimulated the interwar aesthetic thought. For Lindė-Dobilas the major phenomena of European art and aesthetics fit the emphasised variants of nationality without particular collisions; he projects various manifestations of Lithuanianness into universal art contexts. This intellectual-spiritual penetration into the layers of eternal artistry is one of the most inspiring reverberations of his heritage in the current divided literary consciousness. Those elements of the writer’s heritage that are related to methodological procedures, reflect universal aesthetic solutions and belong to wider paradigms of Lithuanian literature and literary philosophy are today most valuable. The writer was able to perceptively reveal the phenomenal peculiarities of the works of Strazdas, Baranauskas, Vienažindys, Krėvė, Kudirka, Vydūnas, Vaižgantas, and others, putting them in line with the all-time prominent creators without any inferiority complex. Lindė-Dobilas’ attempt to show Mickiewicz’ cultural proximity to creators seems to be most fruitful. He perceives the poet’s creation phenomenon as the synthesis of deep experiences of a personality, expression of Lithuanian world-view and European art culture. Lindė-Dobilas very often turns to the topic of love favoured by romanticists, which he interprets from the original aspects that point out new peculiarities of Mickiewicz’ works
Relevance of the signs of the Balts in modern times
The preservation of cultural identity, based on original mythopoetic images and symbols, could be considered as an expression of anti-modernization and folklore aesthetics. However, the aspects of mythic poetry, textuality, codes and metaphors of Lithuanian traditional ornaments, existing and expanding in recent days, are in concordance with the principles of intertextuality, sociology and education of contemporary post-modernist cultural activities. Usually, searching for stereotypical ancient symbols, their analysis, cognition and interpretation could be explained as cultural-history archaeology and its contemporary aestheticism. Researches on signs and their symbolic meanings change the principles of contemporary scientists and encourage them to newly discover traditional ornamentation. Traditional signs are perceived through the prism of innovative intellectual cognition. Artists highlight traditional symbols in various exterior design projects, a festive scenography and decorations, e.g., the straw-wood-fire sculptures, geometric compositions of burning candles and unique computer programmes. Particularly vivid actualization of ancient bands was observed during the festival “The Fire Signs of Autumnal Equinox” held in Vilnius in 2005 (the authors: V. Tumėnas and J. Ikamaitė). The ornamentation band installation of burning candles (the length - 300 m) stretching on the river embankment was accompanied by the booklet explaining its symbolic meanings (prepared by V. Tumėnas). 140 schoolchildren of Vilnius schools helped to implement the idea. The festival of burning candles has become an annual event. The International Plein Air Painters Event “Zime” held in Užupis (Vilnius) in 2009 was based on the interpretation of traditional signs of the Balts (its organizer - V. Tumėnas). The following artists participated in the event: a Latvian designer M. Tenisons and a mathematician-composer A. Strazds. The event adopted the original numeral system “Suranadira”, which is in accordance with digits, geometric ornamentation elements and the principles of composition. The system is very rational, whereas all geometric shapes have a logical and systematic explanation of their roots, the development and interrelations. Their rational validity differs from mystical “hieroglyphic” one, which is peculiar of the Indo-Arabic/Westem numbers. Therefore, the author is interested in a specific field of numerology, where the development of numerals can not be improved without a systematic explanation-justification of their geometric shapes. It is apparent that careful observations of contemporary visual culture revealed the need for geometric figurative coding of information. For example, this need is revealed by popular bar code or square code systems of information conversion. The information, recoded under A. Strazdas method, takes a particularly aesthetic decorative image. Paintings created using this method were displayed on the embankment of the Vilnelė River in Užupis. The Plein Air Event participants and visitors could get the programme signs and certificates. The interactive project “Laima’s net” (V. Tumėnas, A. Strazds, M. Tenisons) held in the 9th Kaunas Biennial 2013: was based on the joint data of computer modifications of the signs of the Balts and geographical identity of the location “Unitext". The Event participants could make their personal signs - pins. More often than not, traditional ornamentation is used in the straw-wood-fire sculptures (sculptors M. Grušas and R. Belevičius), the initial idea of which belongs to the Autumnal Equinox Festival organizer E. Plioplienė. In recent years, the ornamentation of the straw-wood-fire sculptures is used in Equinox Festivals held in Juodkrantė and Plein Air Art Events of mythological character organized by a young artist of Zarasai region - Ž. Danys. It should be noted that contemporary aesthetic activities based on traditional symbols and their relations to mythology acquire a wider and universal meaning compared to seeking a national identity; this includes interdisciplinary artistic activities, linguistic intelligence, the use of metalanguage and the reveal of ancient symbols and historical memory
Cultural heritage discourses and Europeanisation : discursive embedding of cultural herigate in Europe of the regions
Global variation in anastomosis and end colostomy formation following left-sided colorectal resection
none3427noBackground: End colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection. Methods: This study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and-2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle-and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associated with colostomy formation versus primary anastomosis were explored using a multilevel, multivariable logistic regression model. Results: In total, 1635 patients from 242 hospitals in 57 countries undergoing left-sided colorectal resection were included: 113 (6·9 per cent) from low-HDI, 254 (15·5 per cent) from middle-HDI and 1268 (77·6 percent) from high-HDI countries. There was a higher proportion of patients with perforated disease (57·5, 40·9 and 35·4 per cent; P < 0·001) and subsequent use of end colostomy (52·2, 24·8 and 18·9 per cent; P < 0·001) in low-compared with middle-and high-HDI settings. The association with colostomy use in low-HDI settings persisted (odds ratio (OR) 3·20, 95 per cent c.i. 1·35 to 7·57; P = 0·008) after risk adjustment for malignant disease (OR 2·34, 1·65 to 3·32; P < 0·001), emergency surgery (OR 4·08, 2·73 to 6·10; P < 0·001), time to operation at least 48 h (OR 1·99, 1·28 to 3·09; P = 0·002) and disease perforation (OR 4·00, 2·81 to 5·69; P < 0·001). Conclusion: Global differences existed in the proportion of patients receiving end stomas after left-sided colorectal resection based on income, which went beyond case mix alone.noneGlasbey, James C; Global variation in anastomosis and end colostomy formation following left-sided colorectal resection
3427sinoneBackground: End colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection. Methods: This study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and-2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle-and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associated with colostomy formation versus primary anastomosis were explored using a multilevel, multivariable logistic regression model. Results: In total, 1635 patients from 242 hospitals in 57 countries undergoing left-sided colorectal resection were included: 113 (6·9 per cent) from low-HDI, 254 (15·5 per cent) from middle-HDI and 1268 (77·6 percent) from high-HDI countries. There was a higher proportion of patients with perforated disease (57·5, 40·9 and 35·4 per cent; P < 0·001) and subsequent use of end colostomy (52·2, 24·8 and 18·9 per cent; P < 0·001) in low-compared with middle-and high-HDI settings. The association with colostomy use in low-HDI settings persisted (odds ratio (OR) 3·20, 95 per cent c.i. 1·35 to 7·57; P = 0·008) after risk adjustment for malignant disease (OR 2·34, 1·65 to 3·32; P < 0·001), emergency surgery (OR 4·08, 2·73 to 6·10; P < 0·001), time to operation at least 48 h (OR 1·99, 1·28 to 3·09; P = 0·002) and disease perforation (OR 4·00, 2·81 to 5·69; P < 0·001). Conclusion: Global differences existed in the proportion of patients receiving end stomas after left-sided colorectal resection based on income, which went beyond case mix alone.noneGlasbey, James C;
