    Get PDF

The research addresses the construction of new forms of work starting from the experiences of craft brewers, understanding the relationship between learning, career paths and entrepreneurship in the context of the craft economy. The development and growth of microbreweries represents an opportunity for entrepreneurship in the craft sector, offering a growth space for entrepreneurs who wish to create and promote high quality products, while enhancing local resources and contributing to the economic vitality of the territories. Through this dynamic, it is possible to study the process of incorporation of specialized knowledge, skills and competences that occurs through work practices. Furthermore, we explore the paths to become a beer craftsman and analyze the relationship between entrepreneurship in the brewing sector, the local economy and the link with the territory. The experience of craft brewers is part of a global phenomenon of individuals who decide to invest in new craft professions and give new directions to their lives, a choice guided by autonomy, flexibility, passion and the pleasure of work. In parallel, we will explore the re-evaluation of manual work, the authenticity, creativity, innovation and quality of artisan production, the distinction between artisanal and industrial products and recognition through craftsmanship as key elements to reflect on the changes taking place in economy and in the new professions. The research adopts an ethnographic and multidisciplinary approach that encompasses anthropology, sociology, economics, geography, and education. It employs a multi-method research strategy, incorporating participant observation, in-depth biographical interviews, and quantitative analysis of documents and data

The craft beer market in Brazil has experienced significant growth over the past decade, reflecting a global trend towards craft brewing as a counterpoint to industrialstandardisation and mass production. This comprehensive study explores the professionalization and identity formation within the dynamic craft beer industry, emphasising the essential role of craftsmanship and authenticity. Through qualitative interviewsand participant observation, the research highlights how microbrewery owners navigate the complex challenges of the competitive market, balancing passion with precarious working conditions. The study draws on Boltanski and Chiapello's framework of the newspirit of capitalism, examining how brewers' narratives reflect broader cultural and economic shifts. Craft brewers are portrayed as innovative cultural entrepreneurs who priorieise creativity and autonomy, often at the expense of job security and financial stability. The findings suggest that the craft beer market is a site of economic activity and a space for personal expression and identity construction, where passion and practical knowledge are fundamental to building beer entrepreneurship

    No full text
The study analyses the construction of entrepreneurship among craft brewers, focusing on the interconnections between passion, learning, and professional trajectories in the craft economy. It aims to investigate how individuals develop brewing skills, delving into brewers’ learning and professional development and making decisions in a global context of new craft professions driven by autonomy and dedication to work. The study uses in-depth interviews, participant observation during brewery visits, festival attendance, and monitoring of social media posts. We explore individual journeys, analysing the tangible and affective dimensions of the work. We investigate the brewer's essential skills, the differences between craft and industrial beer, personal motivations, and what it means to be a ‘craftsman’

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Craft work is undergoing significant transformations related to integrating emerging technologies, affecting professional practices, knowledge transmission and the sustainability of workplaces. These changes require new organizational structures and skills capable of combining digital innovation and tradition. In an evolving labor market characterized by challenges to the traditional knowledge transmission between master craftsmen and apprentices, the paper analyzes the impact of technologies on craft practices and situated learning within communities of practice. This analysis is grounded in a narrative literature review informed by a critical and interpretive methodological approach. The focus is on creating sustainable learning ecologies that balance technological innovation, social inclusion and cultural enhancement. The analysis highlights the need to develop learning environments that support the adaptation of traditional skills to contemporary challenges. In conclusion, it stresses the importance of maintaining a balance among technology, learning and sustainability to ensure the continuity and evolution of craft work

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
