Older Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans People. Minding the Knowledge Gaps

    No full text
What does it mean to grow older as a lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans (LGBT) person? What gaps in knowledge about LGBT ageing remain? This timely and innovative book reports on a project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council which aimed to address gaps in knowledge about older LGBT people and their experiences of ageing. The book discusses the project and contains chapters either specially commissioned or written by leading researchers and activists in the field. Informed by a range of theoretical perspectives, empirical research studies, critical observations as well as lived experiences, this book explores areas of LGBT ageing that have been under-studied. These include: bisexual ageing; trans ageing and older trans people’s mental health; ethnicity, culture and religion in the lives of older LGBT people and gaps in knowledge about older LGBT people from minority ethnic communities; intergenerational networks; residential and end-of-life care; and the effects of austerity on services. Written in an accessible style, this book is essential for researchers and policy makers interested in the lives of older LGBT people, people who work with older people and teachers and students interested in ageing, gender identity and sexuality

The impact of organic friction modifiers on engine oil tribofilms

    No full text
Organic friction modifiers (OFMs) are important additives in the lubrication of machines and especially of car engines where performance improvements are constantly sought-after. Together with zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDPs) antiwear additives, OFMs have a predominant impact on the tribological behaviour of the lubricant. In the current study, the influence of OFMs on the generation, tribological properties and chemistry of ZDDP tribofilms has been investigated by combining tribological experiments (MTM) with in-situ film thickness measurements through optical interference imaging (SLIM), Alicona profilometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. OFMs and antiwear additives have been found to competitively react/adsorb on the rubbing ferrous substrates in a tribological contact. The formation and removal (through wear) of tribofilms are dynamic processes which result from the simultaneous interaction of these two additives with the surface of the wear track. By carefully selecting the chemistry of OFMs, the formulator can achieve lubricants that generate ZDDP antiwear films of optimum thickness, morphology and friction according to the application-specific requirements. <br/

Transannular anti-Michael addition: formation of 4H-pyrazolo[5,1-c]thiazines

    No full text
The reaction of 2-(diphenylmethylene)thietan-3-one (2) with 1,2,4,5-tetrazines (3a-c) in KOH-MeOH-THF gives 4H-pyrazolo[5,1-c]thiazines (7a-c). This novel condensation reaction proceeds via the intermediacy of an 8-(diphenylmethylene)-2H-1,4,5-thiadiazocin-7(8H)-one (5), which undergoes a multi-step rearrangement including a rare anti-Michael addition. Sao-fa (騷筏) of Heh Yie Suen (賀貽孫 1605-1688, an important poem critic in the transition between Ming and Qing) mainly criticized the works of Ch'ü Yüan (屈原) and Song Yuh (宋玉). It was done at the same time as his other work Shi-fa(詩筏). Sao-fa and Shi-fa are truly the important materials for studying Heh's literary ideology and the late-Ming Dynasty's literary criticism. However, it is incomprehensible that in Taiwan we do not see any detailed critique about Sao-fa. It has merely been referred to in a few papers. This book really awaits scholars to study and ameliorate. Therefore, this paper will closely study Sao-fa and conclude its points of criticism in order to manifest its literary ideology. At the same time, by including my personal points of view, I will comment a bit abut Sao-fa and its author. In the description the focuses are 1) Sao-fa's style of criticism; 2) the literary critical points shown in Sao-fa, which are divided into three levels: work and work, work and the author, the author and the readers. The three above-mentioned levels are discussed briefly. Throughout the paper Shi-fa and Heh's other works are also used to reflect on Sao-fa as a way to refer to Heh's literary history with Late-ming Dynasty's Jing-ling School (竟陵派). Hopefully this paper will give the readers a more complete understanding to Heh's literary ideology and his importance in the history, and I am sure that Sao-fa is critical to an understanding of the development of literary criticism and theory of Ming Dynasty

    Optimal deadlines for agreements

    No full text
Costly delay in negotiations can induce the negotiating parties to be more forthcoming with their information and improve the quality of the collective decision. Imposing a deadline may result in stalling, in which players at some point stop making concessions but switch back to conceding at the end, or a deadlock, in which concessions end permanently. Extending the deadline hurts the players in the first case but is beneficial in the second. When the initial conflict between the negotiating parties is intermediate, the optimal deadline is positive and finite, and is characterized by the shortest time that would allow efficient information aggregation in equilibrium.Repeated proposals, war of attrition, interdependent values

Assisting reading and analysis of text documents by visualization

    No full text
The research reported here examined the use of computer generated graphics as a means to assist humans to analyse text documents which have not been subject to markup. The approach taken was to survey available visualization techniques in a broad selection of disciplines including applications to text documents, group those techniques using a taxonomy proposed in this research, then develop a selection of techniques that assist the text analysis objective. Development of the selected techniques from their fundamental basis, through their visualization, to their demonstration in application, comprises most of the body of this research. A scientific orientation employing measurements, combined with visual depiction and explanation of the technique with limited mathematics, is used as opposed to fully utilising any one of those resulting techniques for performing complete text document analysis. Visualization techniques which apply directly to the text and those which exploit measurements produced by associated techniques are considered. Both approaches employ visualization to assist the human viewer to discover patterns which are then used in the analysis of the document. In the measurement case, this requires consideration of data with dimensions greater than three, which imposes a visualization difficulty. Several techniques for overcoming this problem are proposed. Word frequencies, Zipf considerations, parallel coordinates, colour maps, Cusum plots, and fractal dimensions are some of the techniques considered. One direct application of visualization to text documents is to assist reading of that document by de-emphasising selected words by fading them on the display from which they are read. Three word selection techniques are proposed for the automatic selection of which words to use. An experiment is reported which used such word fading techniques. It indicated that some readers do have improved reading speed under such conditions, but others do not. The experimental design enabled the separation of that group which did decrease reading times from the remaining readers who did not. Measurement of comprehension errors made under different types of word fading were shown not to increase beyond that obtained under normal reading conditions. A visualization based on categorising the words in a text document is proposed which contrasts to visualization of measurements based on counts. The result is a visual impression of the word composition, and the evolution of that composition within that document. The text documents used to demonstrates these techniques include English novels and short stories, emails, and a series of eighteenth century newspaper articles known as the Federalist Papers. This range of documents was needed because all analysis techniques are not applicable to all types of documents. This research proposes that an interactive use of the techniques on hand in a non-prescribed order can yield useful results in a document analysis. An example of this is in author attribution, i.e. assigning authorship of documents via patterns characteristic of an individual's writing style. Different visual techniques can be used to explore the patterns of writing in given text documents. A software toolkit as a platform for implementing the proposed interactive analysis of text documents is described. How the techniques could be integrated into such a toolkit is outlined. A prototype of software to implement such a toolkit is included in this research. Issues relating to implementation of each technique used are also outlined
