Reading and listening to information in public environment on the project of construction of „Gaismas pils”, the new building of Latvian National Library, it can be concluded that there are different opinions. It was important to find out the opinion of librarians themselves because librarians are the people who’ll have a close connection with the result of the project – the new building of Latvian National Library. In the theoretical part of the research the theories of creation of public opinion and the theory of Spiral of silence is being researched. The theories speak on the creation of public opinion and the factors determining it. In the thesis “Opinion of librarians on the implementation of project “Gaismas pils”” the opinions of librarians of Latvian libraries on the implementation of the project of the new building are being researched. In order to find out the opinion of the librarians the author used partially structured interview. In the result it was concluded that librarians in general support the construction of the new building of library, but there are different opinions on the features of it. Part of the librarians think that it had to be visually more simple, planned and implemented in a different way. Keywords: Latvian National Library, project “Gaismas pils”, opinion of librarians

Modeling and Characterization of a Particle-into-Liquid Sampler (PILS)

    No full text
A modified particle-into-liquid sampler (PILS), based on the original design of Weber et al. (2001), is presented. The principal modification in this design is that collected liquid sample is delivered to vials held on a rotating carousel as opposed to an on-line analytical detector. A model is developed to predict aerosol mass concentrations measured by a PILS based on operating parameters and characteristics of the sampled aerosol. A backward model predicts the concentrations of the sampled aerosol based on operating parameters and concentrations measured by the PILS. Both models, which consider plumbing transmission efficiencies, droplet growth, mixing effects, and volatilization losses, predict mass concentrations that are consistent with laboratory tests for step changes in concentration. The average collection efficiency for species (Na^+, K^+, SO_4^(2−), Cl^−, NO_3^−) from a variety of aerosols compared to simultaneous measurements with a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) exceeded 96% except for NH_4^+ (88%); NH_4^+ is theoretically shown to be the most vulnerable to volatilization, followed by Cl^- and then NO_3^− , with greater losses caused by increasing droplet pH and temperature. The characterization tests highlight the importance of reducing NH_4^+ volatilization by keeping a stable tip temperature of 100°C at the point where steam and ambient air mix in the condensation chamber. Maintaining a stable tip temperature also avoids fluctuations in supersaturations that lead to increased deposition losses of larger droplets. Sample data from the 2004 International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT) field campaign are presented

Understanding the effect of low-concentrated protic ionic liquids (PILs) on coconut (Cocos nucifera) residues

    No full text
Concentrated protic ionic liquid (PIL) without dilution has increased saccharification efficiency due to the solubilization of hemicellulose and lignin compounds. However, concentrated PILs are not cost-effective, highly viscous, and toxic to microorganisms. The present study evaluates the effect of PILs on the solubilization of hemicellulose and lignin present in coconut coir and pith. PILs including pyridinium hydrogen sulfate PyHHSO4 and triethylammonium hydrogen sulfate TEAHSO4 were considered in this study. The sugars and lignin were partially hydrolyzed during the PIL pretreatment of coir and pith. However, the degree of biomass solubilization varied for different types of biomass and PIL. The changes in the biomass after pretreatment were studied through FTIR and XRD analysis. The yield of glucose released from PyHHSO4 and TEAHSO4 pretreated coir and pith increased 4.12, 4.73 and 7.36, and 6.44, respectively. The results showed that diluted PIL could be used in a biorefinery to increase the glucose yield with almost similar efficiency obtained from concentrated PIL. The recovery and reusability studies showed the recycled PIL could be utilized 3 times. Further application of low concentrations of PIL suggests the possibility of a new process design for a biorefinery to achieve low operating costs. On the existence of partitioned incomplete Latin squares with five parts

    No full text
Let a, b, c, d, and e be positive integers. In 1982 Heinrich showed the existence of a partitioned incomplete Latin square (PILS) of type (a, b, c) and (a, b, c, d) if and only if a = b = c and 2a ≥ d. For PILS of type (a, b, c, d, e) with a ≤ b ≤ c ≤ d ≤ e, it is necessary that a+b+c ≥ e, but not sufficient. In this paper we prove an additional necessary condition and classify the existence of PILS of type (a, b, c, d, a + b + c) and PILS with three equal parts. Lastly, we show the existence of a family of PILS in which the parts are nearly the same size.Journal ArticlePublishe

For the purpose of comparison with the conventional assembly method, the author evaluates the time and financial burden of the prefabrication method in comparison to the time and financial burden of conventional assembly. The conclusion focuses on the evaluation of both assembly methods and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of prefabricated composite TEB panel assembly

The origin of surfactant amphiphilicity and self-assembly in protic ionic liquids

    No full text
The nature of amphiphilic self-assembly in alkylammonium protic ionic liquids (PILs) is examined by systematically varying the ionic structure and composition, H-bonding capacity, and nanostructure of both the PIL and micelle-forming cationic surfactant, and contrasted with self-assembly in water. Using small-angle neutron scattering, micelle structure and concentrations are determined for primary-quaternary dodecylammonium salts in nitrate and thiocyanate PILs. While the solvophobic driving force depends only on the average polarity of the PIL, surprisingly strong, specific interactions of the head group and counterion with the PIL H-bond network are found. This suggests the importance of developing designer amphiphiles for assembling soft matter structures in PILs

Recommendations for developing accessible patient information leaflets for clinical trials to address English language literacy as a barrier to research participation

    No full text
Background:Low English language literacy is a common barrier to participation in clinical trials. Patient information leaflets (PILs) used in clinical trials are often lengthy, complex and have poor readability; this is a persistent and prevalent problem common to trials across the world. Simplifying the information provided in PILs can lead to improved understanding, comprehension and knowledge. The aim of this project was to develop recommendations for developing accessible PILs for clinical trials through a literature review of published and grey literature and co-working with marginalised communities, patients, and health and social care charities. Methods:A literature review of MEDLINE, Embase and online resources was conducted, and recommendations for developing accessible PILs and were extracted from eligible published and grey literature. Grey literature which contained insights into more inclusive forms of communication was also identified and summarised. Meetings were held with two racially marginalised community groups, two groups involving autistic adults and/or adults with learning difficulties and a patient advisory group. Examples of accessible PILs were shared and discussions held about the content and format of the PILs and suggestions for changes/improvements. National Voices, a coalition of health and social care charities in England, held a national online workshop with charities and lived experience partners. Recommendations identified from the multiple sources were coded, collated and refined to develop an overarching framework of recommendations. Results:The framework consists of 74 recommendations for developing accessible PILs for clinical trials. Recommendations cover the five topics of formatting, information presentation, writing style, content and accessibility. Conclusions:This project has developed a comprehensive framework of recommendations to guide researchers in the development of accessible PILs for clinical trials. Findings from previous research and from co-working with marginalised communities, patients and health and social care charities was collated and to ensure that a diverse range of voices and experiences informed the framework. These recommendations aim to support researchers to develop better study information to reduce English language literacy as a barrier to participation in clinical trials
