    Chester Page Collection

    No full text
Pianist and art connoisseur, Chester Page (1929-) was a close confidant to Modernist American author, Djuna Barnes (1892-1982) during the final decade of her life, as well as a friend to several other major literary figures such as Marianne Moore (1887-1972), Bryher (1894-1983), and Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979). Barnes and Page shared a mutual friendship with Moore. In the spring of 1970 Page wrote to Barnes to introduce himself and to offer his assistance. He was invited to tea at Barnes's apartment at 5 Patchin Place in New York City on 19 May 1970, and from that moment forward, enjoyed a close friendship with the author until her death. After Barnes's death on 18 June 1982, Page became an invaluable source of information on the reclusive author during her final days. He had managed a closeness which Barnes bestowed on a select few. The Chester Page Collection contains correspondence between Barnes and several friends and literary figures and some epemera collected by Page. The collection spans the period 1933 to 1992. Correspondence with Louise Crane (1913-1997) dating between 1970 and 1973 constitutes the bulk of the collection

Continuous metadata flows for distributed multimedia

    No full text
The practical use of temporal multimedia has increased markedly in recent years as enabling technologies for the distribution and streaming of media have become available. As a part of this trend, hypermedia systems and models have adapted accordingly to incorporate such distributed multimedia for presentation. Structured interpretation of information has long been a fundamental feature of both open hypermedia systems and knowledge systems. Metadata, in its many forms, has become the cornerstone for providing this structured knowledge above and beyond basic data and information. This thesis presents the rationale and requirements for continuous metadata, which supports the metadata accompanying distributed multimedia throughout the lifecycle of streamed media, from generation, through distribution, to presentation. Throughout this process it is the temporal and continuous nature of the metadata which is paramount. A conceptual framework for continuous metadata is proposed to encapsulate these principles and ideas. Continuous metadata and the associated framework enable the development, in particular, of real-time, collaborative, semantically enriched distributed multimedia applications. Experience building one such system using continuous metadata is evaluated within the framework. An ontology is developed for the system to enable the collation, distribution, and presentation of structure aiding navigation of multimedia, and it is shown how continuous metadata utilising the ontology can be distributed using multicas

Assessing the George W. Bush Presidency: A Tale of Two Terms

    No full text
In one of the first volumes assessing the full two terms of the George W. Bush presidency, Wroe and Herbert have gathered the work of leading American and European scholars. In fifteen succinct and incisive chapters, authorities such as Jim Pfiffner, John Maltese, Graham Wilson and Alan Gitelson offer assessments of the Bush administration's successes and failures. Extensive attention is paid to Bush's foreign policy, including 'The War on Terror' but the focus is broadened to absorb not only the Bush Doctrine and its repercussions, but also his trade and homeland security policies. The president's domestic leadership in economics and social policy is investigated, as are his dealings as president with the other institutions of the U.S. political system. The result is a comprehensive guide to the Bush presidency and its legacy

A trade union perspective on industrial policy regimes in France, Germany, Denmark, China, Singapore and South Korea: What lessons for the United Kingdom?

    No full text
This submission for a PhD by Published Work brings together five peer-reviewed papers produced between 2010 and 2017, which consider the role and outcomes of industrial policy. It is based on the experiences of France, Germany, Denmark, China, Singapore and South Korea. It considers debates surrounding the desirability of industrial policy at all, as well as discussions considering whether a lighttouch approach, based on David Ricardo’s theory of comparative advantage, or a more radical process, should be pursued. The thesis is framed within the theory of institutional economics. Desk research undertaken for each paper was supplemented by semi-structured interviews conducted while I worked as a Senior Policy Officer at the Trades Union Congress (TUC). Agents within capitalism include trade unions, but the literature on industrial policy does not discuss the institutional role of union practitioners as experts, contributing to the implementation of industrial policy across different models of capitalism. This is a gap that my programme of research seeks to fill. My key findings are: that industrial policy interventions, that is to say, government action taken against market signals, strategically applied, can play a major role in economic development; that transplanting institutions from one model of capitalism to another is problematic, but that developing institutions to take on different responsibilities as economic policy objectives change can overcome ‘path dependency’ constraints within different capitalist models; and that trade unions, using their ‘insider’ status, can shape the development of industrial policy. The contributions to knowledge made by this body of work include the reconceptualizing of industrial relations within the United Kingdom, in order that social partnership is instituted at the company level, to deliver better outcomes for the workforce. My published work has already shaped the debate on the nature of industrial policy through discussion and comment in the national media and through in-depth policy discussions among political leaders and influencers

Open Access for the Medical Librarian

    No full text
The most important aspects of open access for the medical librarian are presented. Reasons for open access include access to research information, access to taxpayer-funded research, facilitation of evidence-based medicine, equity of access, promotion of author control, and controlling library costs. The two primary approaches to open access, via author self-archiving and open access publishing, are presented. Key open access policy developments are highlighted. Many of the major policy initiatives of the moment are from the research funders. From the researcher funders' point of view, open access means more research impact, more real-world impact when professionals can access the literature, and value is illustrated to the taxpayer, building support for further research funding. The world's largest medical research funders, including the U.S. National Institute of Health and the Wellcome Trust, have public access policies, and many more policies are in development. For example, two weeks ago the Federal Research Public Access Act was introduced in the U.S. Senate. One of the essential elements of open access policy is ensuring that researchers are required, not requested, to deposit works. In Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research has a policy in development called Access to Products of Research; public comments are due May 15, 2006. The dramatic growth of open access - over 2,220 journals in DOAJ, over 7.3 million items in an OAIster search - is discussed, as is the idea of new roles for librarians in an open access environment
